Kota Kinabalu: A 22-year-old was fined RM25 or jailed three days by the Magistrate's Court here for peeping at a woman in a public toilet at a shopping mall last week. Terence Thien pleaded guilty before Magistrate Marilyn Kelvin to entering the women's toilet on the lower floor of Star City, Asia City, and causing distress to a 25-year-old woman at around 6pm on Aug 7. The offence falls under Section 8(1)(e) of the Minor Offences Ordinance of Sabah, which carries a fine of RM25 or imprisonment of up to one week, on conviction. According to prosecution, the complainant was inside a cubicle when she noticed someone standing outside her door, with only a pair of feet visible. When she stepped out, she saw Thien running from the toilet. Although she tried to chase him, she was unsuccessful. The complainant then reviewed CCTV footage at the building's control room, which confirmed Thien's entry and exit from the women's toilet. About 20 minutes later, she spotted Thien on the first floor, brought him back to the CCTV room for identification, and subsequently contacted the police, leading to his arrest. In a separate case, 22-year-old Dayang Nurasymira was ordered to pay a fine of RM1,500 or face one month's imprisonment for engaging in online gambling in public. Dayang admitted to the offence committed at a coffee shop in Taman Nelly, Kolombong, on July 22 at 630pm. She was charged under Section 7(2) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953, which provides for a fine of up to RM5,000 or imprisonment of up to six months, or both. During a police raid at the location, Dayang was arrested. An expert report confirmed that the equipment seized was used for online gambling.
