Gardner Minshew details Patrick Mahomes practice habits that separate the Kansas City Chiefs star
Gardner Minshew joined the Kansas City Chiefs this spring after a 2024 season with the Las Vegas Raiders, where he started nine games and completed 66.3 percent of his passes for 2,013 yards, nine touchdowns, and ten interceptions. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Speaking on Thursday, the veteran explained what daily work with Patrick Mahomes looks like. 'It's been awesome, man. It's crazy watching him every day. It's been really cool. Watching how he prepares, how he takes notes, how he practices, and how he has fun,' Minshew said. 'There's so much he does at the highest, best level that it's really cool to be around.' The former Jacksonville Jaguars starter, who threw 21 touchdown passes as a rookie in 2019, emphasized that observing Mahomes' routine was a major reason he chose Kansas City. 'Seeing how he prepares, I think that's one of the things that I really wanted to come here and see: how he prepares, not only in the building but how he gets his body right?' Minshew added. 'How does he train? I think he does everything at the elite, like the highest level. And there's just so much to take from that.' With Mahomes aiming for a fourth straight appearance, Minshew's experience provides insurance if injuries strike again. Fox Sports analyst Henry McKenna ranks Patrick Mahomes No. 1 after Kansas City Chiefs upgrade offensive line Patrick Mahomes owns two MVP awards and three Super Bowl victories, and he remains the top quarterback in Henry McKenna's preseason stock ranking for Fox Sports. McKenna cited Kansas City's offseason moves, including the signings of left tackle Jaylon Moore and rookie tackle Josh Simmons, as key reasons for optimism. 'Mahomes might not finish the season with a stellar record, but his individual performances will look a whole lot prettier than last year,' McKenna wrote. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now 'The Chiefs invested in the left tackle position in both free agency (Jaylon Moore) and the draft (Josh Simmons). I'm willing to bet that position holds solid throughout the season. If the line keeps it together and the young wideouts (Rashee Rice, Xavier Worthy) continue to ascend, Mahomes can finally do more with his offense. Which means he'll be the best QB in the NFL again.' Head coach Andy Reid echoed the focus on protection after last season's pass-rush struggles. Reid said the staff took full responsibility and expects better results with the rebuilt front.

Gardner Minshew: I knew Kansas City was where I wanted to be
For a player who's been in the league since just 2019, quarterback Gardner Minshew has bounced around a bit. After two seasons in Jacksonville, he was traded to Philadelphia. Then he signed with the Colts in 2023, moved on to the Raiders in 2024, and after being released signed with the Chiefs for 2025. Minshew wasn't on the open market for long, which was largely because he knew where he wanted to be. 'From the end of our season — when it seemed like I was going to get cut — I knew in my head that this is where I wanted to be,' Minshew said in his news conference late last week, via Jared Sapp of 'I took a pre-draft visit with the Chiefs back in the day [before] coming into the league. I feel like everything went really well — just talking to coach [Andy] Reid and understanding what they're all about. I always knew that [Kansas City would] be a really good fit.' Minshew noted he's long been a fan of Reid's offenses. 'I've always felt that was something that I could do well in,' Minshew said. 'I feel like Pat came up playing in the 'Air Raid.' It was something I did in college as well. I feel like that kind of play style — of just understanding and feeling space and understanding leverage in numbers — really serves you well in the system.' Now that he's officially with the club, Minshew said he's looking forward to being a support system for two-time MVP Patrick Mahomes. 'I'm super fired up to be part of just a winning organization [and] winning culture,' Minshew said. 'I feel like I have so much to learn from how Coach Reid and everybody operates — [and] how Pat operates — and I'm just looking forward to helping in any way I can. If there's any way I can help this team — whether it's on the scout team, whether it's helping Pat in meetings, whether it's just bringing good energy to practice — I look forward to just doing whatever I can to contribute and help this team win.'

Kansas City Chiefs sign QB Bailey Zappe to a one-year deal
Kansas City Chiefs sign QB Bailey Zappe to a one-year deal Only a day after adding Gardner Minshew, the Kansas City Chiefs are signing another potential backup quarterback for Patrick Mahomes, who is already familiar with the system. According to a report from NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, the Chiefs are re-signing quarterback Bailey Zappe on a one-year deal. The deal was announced hours after the Minshew signing. Kansas City may have opened the door for a potential backup quarterback position competition. Zappe spent training camp last year with Kansas City and was on the Chiefs practice squad for the season's first few weeks. The 25-year-old was never activated by Kansas City in 2024 and later signed by the Cleveland Browns to start their Week 18 season finale. In the game against the Baltimore Ravens, he completed 16 passes for 170 yards, a touchdown, and two interceptions. The former New England Patriots 2022 fourth-round NFL Draft pick has a career record of 12 touchdowns and 14 interceptions, completing 62.1 percent of his passes. Minshew's health could be a factor in the signing, but it does provide depth at the position heading into next season.

Chiefs tap Gardner Minshew as Patrick Mahomes' new backup for 2025 season: reports
Patrick Mahomes enters the 2025 season with another new backup quarterback. Gardner Minshew, who started nine games for the Las Vegas Raiders in 2024, signed a one-year deal with the Kansas City Chiefs, according to ESPN. Minshew signed a two-year, $25 million contract last offseason to battle for the starting role with the Raiders. He started the first five games of the season, but after going 2-3, head coach Antonio Pierce went with his backup, Aidan O'Connell, for Week 6 against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Minshew was back starting by Week 8 as the Raiders struggled to put together wins. Then, in Week 12, Minshew broke a collarbone that knocked him out for the rest of the season, leaving the quarterback duties in O'Connell's hands. Minshew finished the year 2-8 in the 10 games he played, passing for 2,013 yards with nine touchdowns and 10 interceptions. However, Minshew has had better seasons in the past, including a Pro Bowl year with the Indianapolis Colts in 2023. He went 7-6 in his 13 starts in place of rookie Anthony Richardson, throwing for a career-high 3,305 yards with 15 touchdowns and nine interceptions. For his six-year career, which began as a Jacksonville Jaguars sixth-round pick in 2019, Minshew is 17-29 over his 46 starts with 11,950 passing yards, 68 touchdowns and 34 interceptions. Last season, Carson Wentz, the former Philadelphia Eagles franchise quarterback, backed up Mahomes in Kansas City. The year before that, it was Chad Henne. The Chiefs hope Minshew doesn't have to step into a starting role since it would mean Mahomes would be dealing with an injury.
