Lee (right) inspects the progress of the upgrading projects at Miri Airport, joined by Mohd Jauhari (second left). MIRI (May 30): The five major infrastructure upgrade projects at Miri Airport are now 29 per cent completed – 15 per cent ahead of schedule, said Sarawak Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin. He said the upgrades are part of efforts to improve passenger comfort, operational efficiency, and future capacity at the airport. Speaking to reporters after chairing a meeting with Malaysia Airports Berhad (MAHB) Miri today, Lee said the ongoing projects include the renovation and refurbishment of passenger toilets, expected to be completed by Dec 23, 2025. Other upgrades include the replacement of escalators at the public concourse and arrival hall. The replacement of air conditioning and mechanical ventilation (ACMV) ducting is set to be completed and operational by mid-July 2025, while the rehabilitation works on the concrete slab at Apron Bay 1 are expected to finish by Feb 19, 2026. Additionally, the installation, testing and commissioning of a Passenger Boarding Bridge (PBB) equipped with a Visual Docking Guidance System (VDGS) is expected to be completed by June 30, 2025. Lee also shared that the Public Works Department (JKR) has started preliminary design work for the proposed terminal expansion, with the initial study expected to conclude by November this year. Detailed design work is scheduled to commence in 2026. To further enhance the airport's appearance and passenger experience, Lee has proposed repainting the terminal building, which is now over 20 years old. As the ongoing works may cause temporary inconvenience, Lee urged airport users to exercise caution while navigating the terminal. 'Signage has been installed, and more will be added to help guide passengers during the upgrade period. 'I'm pleased that all the projects we've advocated are now underway. These improvements are essential, especially since Miri Airport has handled over two million passengers annually since 2013,' he added. Lee emphasises the government's commitment to preparing Miri Airport for future growth, while ensuring comfort and safety for all users. Also present at the press conference was Miri Airport manager Mohd Jauhari Abdullah. Lee Kim Shin Miri Airport upgrading projects

Man arrested at Miri airport in attempt to smuggle drug
MIRI: Police foiled an attempt by a local man to smuggle drugs with the seizure of the contraband, believed to be methamphetamine weighing 10.5kg, in a raid at the Arrival Hall of the Miri Airport last Tuesday. District police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah, in a statement posted on the Miri District Police Facebook page, said the 20-year-old suspect, who is an unemployed man from the interior of Sarawak, was arrested immediately after claiming a box at the baggage claim area. "Further inspection of the box found it contained 10 packages of drugs suspected to be Methamphetamine (syabu) hidden under a layer of snack food packages," he said. He said the police also seized 120 vape pods containing a liquid believed to be Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), weighing approximately 986 grams. The total value of the seizure is estimated at RM380,000. Mohd Farhan said preliminary investigations found that the suspect has travelled to Kuala Lumpur to collect the package before returning to Miri. The case is investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which provides the mandatory death penalty or life imprisonment, and if not sentenced to death, whipping of not less than 12 strokes to the offender. Mohd Farhan also reminded the public, especially youths, to be wary of lucrative job offers circulating on social media as they may be traps set by syndicates to recruit unsuspecting individuals as drug mules. – Bernama

MIRI (May 8): Police thwarted an attempt to smuggle 10.5kg of methamphetamine into the city when they arrested a suspected drug mule at Miri Airport on Tuesday. Miri police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said the suspect, a 20-year-old local man, was nabbed following his arrival from Kuala Lumpur at around 3.30pm. 'Acting on intelligence gathered, a team from the Sarawak Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (NCID) detained the suspect after he collected a box at the baggage claim area in the arrival hall. 'An inspection of the box found packets of snacks placed on top of 10 packages containing substances believed to be methamphetamine, weighing 10.5kg,' he told a press conference here today. He said police also seized 120 vape pods containing liquid believed to be ecstasy that were packed in the box. 'The total value of the seizure is estimated at RM380,000,' he added. The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the mandatory death penalty or life imprisonment, and if not sentenced to death, a minimum of 12 strokes of the cane. Mohd Farhan revealed that initial investigations found that this was not the first time the unemployed suspect had acted as a drug mule, adding he was hired to travel to Kuala Lumpur to collect the box and transport it back here. He also expressed his gratitude to the public for channelling information to the police that led to the successful bust. Mohd Farhan advised youths, especially new graduates seeking employment, not to be easily deceived by job advertisements on social media offering high salaries that may lead them to unknowingly become drug mules. Also present at the press conference were Miri deputy police chief Supt Nur Asyhikin Abdullah, Miri NCID chief ASP Radzani Rasit, and investigating officer Insp Muhammad Luqman Hakim Roslan.
