Cops foil attempt to smuggle 10.5kg of syabu and almost 1kg of MDMA through Miri Airport
Miri Police Chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah, in a statement posted on the Miri District Police Facebook page, said the 20-year-old suspect, who is an unemployed man from the interior of Sarawak, was arrested immediately after claiming a box at the baggage claim area.
"Further inspection of the box found it contained 10 packages of drugs suspected to be Methamphetamine (syabu) hidden under a layer of snack food packages," he said
He said the police also seized 120 vape pods containing a liquid believed to be Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), weighing approximately 986 grams.
The total value of the seizure is estimated at RM380,000.
According to ACP Mohd Farhan, preliminary investigations found that the suspect has travelled to Kuala Lumpur to collect the package before returning to Miri.
The case is investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which provides the mandatory death penalty or life imprisonment, and if not sentenced to death, whipping of not less than 12 strokes to the offender.
ACP Mohd Farhan also reminded the public, especially youths, to be wary of lucrative job offers circulating on social media as they may be traps set by syndicates to recruit unsuspecting individuals as drug mules. - Bernama

CNB said that a 25-year-old Malaysian man was arrested at Woodlands Checkpoint on Aug 5 for attempting to smuggle drugs into Singapore via a Malaysian-registered car. Officers from the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) had directed the car for enhanced checks and found several biscuit packages suspected to contain controlled drugs on the rear passenger seat. "CNB officers were immediately alerted to the detection and conducted further checks. The biscuit packages were later found to contain about 2,033g of heroin and 731g of 'Ice',' CNB said in a statement, Monday. On Aug 6, CNB officers arrested a 39-year-old Malaysian man and a 43-year-old Malaysian woman, together with a 53-year-old Singaporean man, for suspected drug offences following an operation in the vicinity of Jurong West and Henderson Road. The Malaysian man was found with 60g of 'Ice' and keycards to a hotel located in the vicinity of Geylang. "With the keycards recovered, CNB officers swiftly raided the hotel rooms and found a total of about 1,421g of heroin, 62g of 'Ice' and drug paraphernalia,' the agency added. CNB said that later the same day, through follow-up investigations, a second operation was launched in the vicinity of Tampines, resulting in the arrest of a 28-year-old Malaysian man. In a statement issued by Istana Seri Kinabalu today, the Governor stressed that the investigation must be conducted with the utmost diligence, without fear or favour, and guided solely by the pursuit of truth and justice. 'No stone must be left unturned. Seeking justice is not vengeance, it is the fulfilment of Allah's command to protect the weak and punish the wrongdoer,' the statement read. The Governor also urged the public, particularly social media users, to refrain from speculation, spreading unfounded accusations, or promoting conspiracy theories related to the case, as such actions could jeopardise the integrity of the investigation and cause further emotional distress to Zara's grieving family. The Palace called on the public to allow due process to take its course and to stand in solidarity with the family as they seek answers and closure. Extending heartfelt condolences to the family, Tun Musa and Toh Puan Faridah expressed their deep sadness over the tragic loss. 'May they find strength and solace amidst this unimaginable grief,' the statement read. A Majlis Tahlil and state-level prayer gathering for the late Zara will be held on Thursday, Aug 14, at the Masjid Bandaraya Kota Kinabalu, as well as in all mosques and surau throughout Sabah. State, district officials to conduct anti-bullying spot checks, says education DG
Education director-general Azam Ahmad said school principals have been told to lead chants of 'Kami Benci Buli' ('We Hate Bullying') before and after each school session to instil abhorrence for bullying among students. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The education ministry has ordered all state education directors and district education officers to conduct spot checks on schools to curb bullying. Education director-general Azam Ahmad said the officials must also visit boarding schools, not only to monitor but also to understand how boarding school students live. 'We need to do so without being told. 'We might visit at night to see the dormitories,' Bernama reported him as saying today. Azam said the ministry had also told school principals to lead chants of 'Kami Benci Buli' ('We Hate Bullying') before and after each school session to instil an abhorrence for bullying among students. Earlier today, in a statement, Azam said the education ministry will implement several anti-bullying measures, including improving standard operating procedures (SOPs) on school safety and handling disciplinary issues. 'The existing SOPs and guidelines will be reviewed to ensure they are relevant to current and future needs. Safety audits will be carried out immediately at all educational institutions, including boarding schools. 'The audit will focus on compliance with safety SOPs. The results will be presented to the ministry's top management in three months,' he said. Azam said the ministry would also simplify its Aduan Buli portal, meant to channel complaints on bullying, to give complainants the option of remaining anonymous. This is to protect their identities as well as that of witnesses. This follows the widely reported death of Form 1 student Zara Qairina Mahathir, who was found unconscious at 4am on July 16 after allegedly falling from the third floor of her school's hostel in Papar, Sabah. She died at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital in Kota Kinabalu the following day. The Attorney-General's Chambers later ordered the police to exhume her body so that a post-mortem could be conducted to help in the investigation into her death, amid allegations of bullying.
