These are the worst offending Brits for reserving sunbeds abroad

Wandering down to the swimming pool on your all-inclusive, you're itching for an ideal spot in the sun. Except, when you get down there, every single sun lounger in sight is occupied with a towel – and yet not one holidaymaker is sitting on them. The question of whether it's socially acceptable to reserve a bed is a classic holiday debate. We're not talking leaving your belongings while you pop to the bar for a swift drink either, but getting up at the crack of dawn and abandoning ship for hours on end. So, just who is guilty of this divisive holiday habit? A new study has revealed the UK regions most likely to snap up sunbeds early. The West Midlands took the crown, with 15% of locals admitting to waking up early to reserve a lounger. Things aren't much better in Wales, North East England, the North West or Northern Ireland, where 13% fessed up to this controversial practice, while the East of England, London, and South East England were all level at 12%. Fuel your wanderlust with our curated newsletter of travel deals, guides and inspiration. Sign up here. The good people of the East Midlands were much better behaved than their neighbours, coming in at 10%, as did bonnie Scotland. The least guilty? It's a tie between Yorkshire and the Humber and South West England, where just 8% of holidaymakers owned up to being a sunbed hogger, according to GetYourGuide. The good news is that while this behaviour is undoubtedly irksome for those of us who want a fair chance at securing a spot, it's becoming less common. One in 10 might've admitted to it this time around, but it's at least decreased from the whopping 72% five years ago. Metro previously declared the beginning of 2025's sunbed wars back in May, after an altercation at a resort in Lanzarote came with the battle cry 'you picked on the wrong person.' There were even threats of getting the manager involved. The spat at the Hyde Park Lane hotel was caught on camera by Callum Lines, 31, after a Scottish woman marched over to a woman on a sunbed declaring that she had taken her spot. The resort has an explicit policy of banning guests from reserving loungers. The notorious act of reserving a sunbed on holiday has long been hotly debated, so much so that in 2024, drones were even deployed across 'beach-hogging' hotspots in Greece. Here, members of the public can use an app to report people placing towels down in restricted areas – with the Greek government declaring that it issued approximately €350,000 (£302,967) in fines in a mere five-day period. And, in the view of etiquette expert William Hanson, there's a specific time limit on how long you can leave your belongings before it becomes rude. 'Reserving sun loungers with a towel for longer than 30 minutes is a big no-no, [and] beyond that grace period it's first come, first served,' he previously told Mirror Online. Over on the r/AskUK Subreddit, @bonomini6 previously revealed that they couldn't secure a sunbed when arriving at the pool at 10am, as people had 'come down at stupid o'clock, left their towels there and then disappeared all day.' 'Why do you do this? Don't you realise that if you didn't, we could all relax a bit more as the sun beds would be available when we actually wanted to use them,' they added, going as far as to suggest that if zero beds were available, it might be acceptable to 'remove towels.' More Trending They weren't alone, as @saitins confessed that in this situation, they 'scope out for a prospective spot for 10 or so minutes, and if no one returns, the towels get chucked.' Meanwhile, @evilsquits reflected on their experiences holidaying in Majorca, when they rented one static parasol and two sunbeds. 'The woman behind us didn't want a parasol and only rented a bed and then started moving it around ours to get in the shade after a few hours,' they penned, adding that the staff ended up telling her off and 'dragging her out of the vicinity of us.' 'I quite like folding them neatly and leaving them by the bar so it looks like the staff did it,' @EarlyGoose9284 added, while @WellFiredRoll described the act as straight up 'pathetic.' Girlfriend of Brit who died in Ibiza hotel fall 'disgusted' by 'lack of respect'

Ibiza Rocks Hotel just wanted tragic Evan Thomson's friend out so they could 'start the party again' hours after the 26-year-old's death, his furious pals have claimed The grieving girlfriend of a Brit who fell to his death from an Ibiza hotel claims staff jet-washed away his blood little over an hour after his death as friends allege management wanted them gone so they could 'start the party again'. ‌ Evan Thomson was on the island celebrating his 26th birthday with pals when he hit the ground after falling from his sixth-floor balcony. His devastated loved ones are now are demanding answers following concerns over safety at the raucous Ibiza Rocks Hotel, where he was staying earlier this month. ‌ The man, from Aberdeen, Scotland, was pronounced dead at the scene after medics rushed to the hotel at 6am on July 7. Friends and family have blasted bosses over how the aftermath of Evan's death was handled, and have claimed the hotel resumed normal operations less than 90 minutes after his traumatic death. They are enraged by social media posts uploaded hours later pushing their next pool party. ‌ They claimed they sat in an office 'without answers' for an hour after they were informed of Evan's death before they were allowed back to their rooms. The tragic Brit's pals say they were told to pack up their belongings before being transferred to another nearby hotel. Angry friend Blair Robertson, 25, told the Press and Journal: "We heard the jet washes from the ground cleaning the area where Evan died and it had only been 90 minutes or so since he was found. That was the worst thing for us to hear – how fast they tried to get things back to normal. ‌ "They took us out of the hotel at around 9am and put us in a new hotel down the road. It was like they wanted to get back to business as usual as soon as possible. It was just a very traumatic experience. They just wanted us out – and to start the party again. It was a disregard of life. It was hard hearing the cleaners coming into the room in the morning, as though nothing had happened." Evan's girlfriend Remi Duncan, 23, also hit out at the staff and added: 'It was disgusting. There was minimal respect for the situation, considering the music went back on soon after Evan had died. It puts a pit in your stomach.' Another friend, James Shan, claimed that the hotel looked at Evan's death from a 'business perspective' and claimed they posted on so 'are you ready for the next event?' within hours his death. He called the upload "sickening". MirrorOnline have contacted Ibiza Rocks Hotel for their response. In an earlier statement, a spokesperson said: 'This is a truly tragic and extremely sad situation. Our senior management team onsite did everything possible to help the police with their investigation into events leading up to Evan's death, and to provide constant support from our customer services manager to Evan's friends. 'That has included them having 24-hour access to our senior manager for any help or questions and giving them permission to pass on her mobile number to Evan's family should they wish to call us direct. They were very appreciative of all the help and support at such a difficult time. We are deeply saddened by Evan's death and our thoughts continue to be with his family and friends at this truly difficult time." Evan's mother Lel Kellighan spoke of her agony of social media. "'I'm absolutely heartbroken to write and tell you all, earlier this week my son Evan was in a tragic accident whilst on holiday with his friends in Ibiza and sadly passed away. We are all absolutely broken. Please allow us some time." His death came days after another British holidaymaker died in hospital on the island after plunging from a supermarket carpark. The 25-year-old, not yet named, fell from the Mercadona outlet in the resort of San Antonio. He was taken to the private Nuestra Senora del Rosario Polyclinic in Ibiza, but didn't survive.

Gino D'Acampo blasted over 'disturbing' video branded 'highly inappropriate'

Under-fire 42-year-old TV chef Gino D'Acampo has angered fans by his treatment of live animals with one vowing to go vegetarian after watching his 'upsetting' video TV chef Gino D'Acampo has provoked fury after uploading an 'alarming' cooking video involving two cute live quails. Gino - battling allegations of sexually inappropriate behaviour which has seen ITV drop the star - caused outrage with the clip on social media. Seen before he prepares a meal, the 42-year-old kisses the live creatures in the first shot after grabbing them tight. Then, in the follow up, the Italian dangles the animals' corpses as Bob Marley's song Three Little Birds plays, before plating up the cooked quails. ‌ He captioned the video: "And that's how it's done!!!… Chargrilled Quails with zucchine and garlic vinaigrette. The perfect summer's dish… Ask your butcher for quails, try it and let me know." But his actions have enraged fans, who hit out the telly star for his treatment of the animals. MirrorOnline have approached Gino for his response to their response. ‌ "I'm not a vegan, but this anthropocentric exhibitionism disgusts me," one told him. Another hit out, saying: "Disturbing and upsetting. It's like showing a cute puppy and then showing it euthanized." A third person told the star: "I just feel numb and thinking now about becoming a vegetarian tbh." The star took a step away from public life following allegations of sexually inappropriate behaviour aimed at him - claims he strongly denies. As a result former This Morning host Gino was removed from ITV's programming in February. ITV reported that dozens of former staff and freelancers made allegations about working with Gino, calling his behaviour over a reported 12 year period 'unacceptable,' 'distressing,' and 'horrendous'. ‌ Since the allegations, his shows have been pulled from ITV's schedule. Gino, 48, 'firmly denied' accusations of inappropriate behaviour including using sexualised and aggressive language over a period of 12 years made following an ITV News investigation, and it has been reported he is using his time to flog his property. He said the claims against him were 'simply not in my nature'. Amid the reports, it was claimed Gordon Ramsay, his co-star in Gordon, Gino and Fred's Road Trip, had distanced himself from the presenter. But Gino insists they're still firm friends. Now the Italian presenter has revealed plans to return to telly with a new travelogue, to be filmed later this year. ‌ "I would not do anything that I thought would upset or distress anyone. This is simply not in my nature. I do not recognise the version of events being put to me. "Not only have these allegations never been raised with me before, I have been repeatedly supported by executives at the highest level and was commissioned on prime-time programmes during the period in which it is now suggested I was acting inappropriately. "I am a father, husband and have worked with well over 1,500 people on around 80 productions in my career, which I have been so proud of. I take such matters extremely seriously and the suggestion that I have acted in an improper way against is deeply upsetting." Gino made some crass remarks in radio interview last week as he returns to spotlight. In sexualised comments about women's bodies, he told show hosts that a "real man" wants women to have "things to grab", while explaining that he prefers a curvier figure.
