'Spirit' of Mumbai: Video of Mumbaikars drinking in knee-deep water sparks amusement
Heavy rain continued to disrupt normal life in Mumbai on Wednesday – but one video shows how even a red alert can't interfere with the daily routine of Mumbaikars. Over the last two days, India's financial capital has witnessed persistent rainfall that has brought life to a standstill. Some local trains were cancelled, while government offices declared a holiday. Private offices were urged to let employees work from home as some neighbourhoods saw severe waterlogging. Even as waterlogging brought life to a standstill, two men were seen sharing a bottle of alcohol while sitting in knee-deep water. The video, filmed at an unknown location, apparently within Mumbai, shows how the two men set up a table, chairs and bottles of alcohol with glasses in a flooded road outside a residential building. It has collected over half a million views on X, along with a ton of amused comments. 'Spirit of Mumbai.. or Mumbaikars with Spirits?' commented one X user, playing on the word 'spirit'. 'India not for beginners,' another said. One X user named Monica Jasuja added: 'Indian adaptability isn't a skill - it's survival'. Many praised the two men for making the best out of a bad situation. 'Made their own luxury resort like pool party,' a viewer wrote. 'Indians can survive anything with high spirits,' another joked. "The Colaba observatory in south Mumbai received 107.4 mm rain, whereas the Santacruz observatory in the western suburbs reported 209 mm during the 24-hour period," an official from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said, as per PTI. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday slammed the Karnataka government for alleged mismanagement of RCB's IPL victory parade, after a stampede-like situation near Bengaluru's M. Chinnaswamy Stadium left eleven people dead and dozens injured. Karnataka BJP chief BY Vijayendra said the event lacked adequate preparation and police deployment. 'The state government, without any preparedness, should not have organised this today," he told reporters. 'If you saw the World Cup celebrations in Mumbai, it was planned with proper arrangements. Lakhs celebrated in Bengaluru last night. Why hold another event so soon and without preparation?" Leader of the Opposition in the Karnataka Assembly, R. Ashoka, echoed the criticism, drawing comparisons with other Indian cities. 'It is very saddening. Cities like Mumbai and Kolkata also celebrated their teams' victories, but what are we seeing here in Bengaluru?" Chief Minister Siddaramaiah confirmed eleven deaths and thirty-three injuries. 'More than two to three lakh people came. No one expected this much crowd," he said during a press conference. He announced a magisterial inquiry and ₹10 lakh compensation for the families of the deceased. Deputy CM DK Shivakumar said the crowd overwhelmed security. 'They broke the gates. A lot of stampeding occurred," he said. 'We cancelled the procession from the airport and from Vidhana Soudha due to the overwhelming crowd and rain. Even at the stadium, we instructed the organisers to wind up the event in ten to fifteen minutes." He said the venue's capacity was 35,000, but over two lakh people attended.
