Emma Corrin Thinks Elizabeth Bennet Would Smell Like Miu Miu's Newest Fragrance

In the eccentric world of Miu Miu Beauty, a 'Miutine' is a free spirit who navigates life effortlessly, on their own terms. It's also the name of the Italian brand's new strawberry, gardenia, and brown sugar scent and could apply just as easily to the fragrance's face, Emma Corrin. In Corrin's words, someone is a Miutine if they are 'an insanely clever person, really funny, and completely outside the box.' The actor thinks the term also encapsulates Elizabeth Bennet, the beloved character they are slated to play in Netflix's upcoming adaptation of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, saying: 'She's the most irreverent soul we have, isn't she?' Below, ELLE caught up with Corrin on their beauty routine and their go-to Miu Miu accessory—plus we played a game of smell association with their characters. It bookends the day. It's the first thing you do in the morning and the last thing you do at night. It's the foundation of everything, really. I'm a very smell-oriented person, I always have been. Scent plays a huge part in my life. It makes me think about summer. Like light things. It's got incredibly rich but elegant notes of strawberry, gardenia, and brown sugar. It's decadent, but elegant and sweet. And sophisticated. To me, it means independence, freedom, creative expression, and irreverence. [Someone with] a rebellious and independent spirit. Oh, my gosh. The bags. And the glasses. I'm quite a natural beauty person, so my routine is very skin care oriented. I feel most comfortable in no-makeup makeup—polished but subtle. Ooh. I remember actually smelling her perfume that she used to wear. It was a blue flower, maybe an iris or something, but lilac-y. It was very fresh and very feminine. It was beautiful. Like earth. Oh, actually, maybe something metal-y, maybe a bit metallic. I don't know why I think that. I think Dorothy would smell like roses, a really classic rose scent. There's something very original and classic about that. She's a classic period character. I think she would smell like Miutine. She beats to her own drum. I'm very excited about it. It's a once-in-a-lifetime role. Pride and Prejudice comes around once a generation, and there hasn't been a new adaptation since 2005, which is a really long time. There are themes in it that will be everlastingly relatable for everyone. It's a comedy, it's so fun and so funny. It's going to be a riot, and I can't wait to work with Olivia [Colman] and Jack [Lowden]. It'll be brilliant. This interview has been edited and condensed for clarity. Ropion chose Mara des Bois strawberries, a unique variety available for harvest just once a year. The juicy, jammy flesh of these berries is renowned amongst the culinary set in Paris, often becoming the nectar of choice for fine French pastry chefs. 'The vibrancy and regressive aspect of wild strawberry brings a lively and cheerful dimension to the scent, evoking a sense of joy and spontaneity,' she says. In the campaign directed by filmmaker Hailey Benton Gates, they browse a towering bookshelf in a whimsical library, searching for the perfect word in a dictionary before landing on 'Miutine' and literally bringing the word to vivid reality. 'The scent represents all the aspects that I treasure and respect the most in myself and others; rebellion, expression, originality. Emma Corrin Knows They Play All Your Favorites
While the couch is comfortable—something that would typically hypnotize me into a nap, especially right off the plane—Corrin's energy is bright and engaging while we discuss their work with Miu Miu. 'In the latter half of my 20s, I was doing so much growing as a person," the British-born actor says. 'The brand has really listened to me, and sees me as an individual. I instinctively feel like that's quite unique and quite special.' Master perfumer Dominique Ropion created Miutine (a play on the word mutine, or rebellion) as a subversion of the incredibly popular gourmand fragrance category. 'I started from a classic and I twisted it with a surprising resonance, a harmony of mischievous freshness and opulent sensuality,' he says. The opening is a note of Mara des Bois, a wild strawberry grown in France, with olfactive twists and turns that include bourbon vanilla extract and patchouli, as well as a tiny hint of jasmine. The first time I get a whiff is when Corrin passes me the vintage-style flacon. Sweet, but not overpowering. That's also when I notice a thick band on their pointer finger, which signals to me a single thing: 'Oura ring?' I ask, like I'm speaking a secret language of wellness trackers. 'Yes, I just started wearing it,' they confess. 'I'm not really into wellness, and this is my entry point.' Last night, my sleep score was 11, I bemoan. When it comes to beauty and wellness in general, Corrin says they a 'very much a less is more person.' Their skincare routine includes the Lyma laser (a clinical-level cold laser that was available in the UK long before it came to the US a few years ago) and at-home facials, but the approach to makeup is mostly on-set. 'No one around me really wore a lot of makeup, so I'm a real novice when it comes to that.' It's the ethos behind Miutine that influenced Corrin to add it to their minimalist beauty routine. 'They want it to be a scent that champions individuality, irreverence, fun, rule-breaking, and mischievousness,' she reflects. 'To try and put that in a bottle is quite a challenge, and to actually make it sing for those things.' Miu Miu Beauty's take on these feelings isn't like the old-school fragrance commercials—running off a cliff and jumping into the ocean, driving a car through a winding road—but instead it's more like the time we have spent together today, a close conversation with a friend (or stranger) in a library.
