'Why change a winning team?': Orlando Pirates legend rants at technical team
Former Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Moeneeb Josephs has slammed his former team following their shock 1-0 loss to Sekhukhune United on Saturday. Playing in front of a packed Orlando Stadium, the Sea Robbers failed to find the back of the net in their first Betway Premiership match of the season. Despite their 2-0 win against Polokwane City in the MTN8 quarter-finals, Pirates looked sluggish a week later against an organised Sekhukhune side. Speaking on the Soccer Beat podcast, Josephs felt Orlando Pirates players took the match for granted after their impressive MTN8 quarter-final win. 'Everyone was looking forward to this season, looking at how last weekend's game went but we have to be constructive as well,' he said. 'This team looks like a team that got results last weekend and thought to themselves, 'I just need to be on the pitch, and the results will take care of themselves. ' 'That will not happen; we never looked like we were going to hurt them. This is Orlando Pirates, we must know that the team that faces us will want to beat us; they will be more motivated. 'We came up against a team that has structure. Eric (Tinkler) structured that team and we can't break them down; we don't have plan A or B.' We have all the ammunition to break them down, but we are using them in the wrong areas. We have to go back to the basics, simple as that,' Josephs said in a rant. The double treble winner questioned Orlando Pirates coach's decision to experiment during the first match of the season. 'Listen, these results hurt because we spoke last season about what we need to do to stay up there. We need to start well, we need to start on the right foot. 'Time for experimentation is gone; hence, you had the pre-season. My disappointment as well comes from the technical team, because why didn't we carry on with the team that did well last season? because they know exactly what is expected; the tempo, the pressure and then slowly introduce these new players,' said the Orlando Pirates legend. Two weeks ago, it was reported that Israeli clubs Maccabi Tel Aviv and Maccabi Haifa had reached out to Orlando Pirates with the view of making an offer for the 20-year-old sensation. As a result, they were reportedly given a price of around R31 million to get the deal done. But Josephs, who spent five years at Pirates and also played at the 2010 World Cup in the country, has voiced his concerns about Mofokeng moving to Israel. 'We want the best for our players, and if they move on, they must move on to something better,' Josephs, currently the goalkeeper coach of the Kenya national team, said on the SoccerBeat podcast. He went on to pour cold water on the claim that the move would be good for Mofokeng as the club plays in Europe. 'Don't tell me about the Champions League, these teams that are chasing him are Maccabi Haifa and Tel Aviv, those are the whipping boys of the Champions League,' he continued. 'Rele (Mofokeng) is a star, and stars go to the big leagues. These agents mustn't be greedy because of money and say, 'he is going overseas.' No, there's a difference overseas. 'Don't tell me about Champions League football, (we want) Champions League football where we are going to see our boy shine. 'We want to see our boy in the Bundesligas of the world. 'So, send our boy to a safe zone. Send our boy to a place where he can grow. Orlando Pirates legend on Saleng: 'You let the club down'
Orlando Pirates legend Moeneeb Josephs has expressed his disappointment in Monnapule Saleng. The 27-year-old winger has not played for the Buccaneers in over six months, reportedly due to a contract dispute. Neither the club nor the player has publicly addressed the issue. Josephs believes that Saleng has let the club down, especially in the second half of the season when the Buccaneers needed quality players to compete for the league title and the CAF Champions League. He warns that Saleng might find himself sidelined, especially with the club having acquired new players. 'Every season, a new footballer comes along,' the former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper said on Soccer Beat . 'Yes, I know it was a contract dispute that kept him on the sidelines and obviously, the influence he's got from the side as well but look now. Now it's causing him problems because we have new signings and we are looking forward to the new signings.' The former Pirates keeper admits Saleng is a great talent, but questioned his commitment following his sabbatical. What do we remember of Saleng? It is a fact that when we needed him, he wasn't there. He was an integral part of us, and he made people who are not involved in the game influence his decision, and that is disappointing for me. 'Yes, I love Saleng, he is an amazing player but as much as I love to see Saleng, I'm tired of this thing man.' The Buccaneers have already resumed their pre-season and will jet off to Spain in the next two weeks. Thabiso Monyane and Paseka Mako both had their contracts run out at Pirates, and have reportedly made the move down the road to Naturena. Pirates finished last season in second position, as Mamelodi Sundowns won their eighth league title in a row and were crowned Betway Premiership champions. Chiefs, meanwhile, finished their second successive season outside the top eight as they ended their campaign in ninth. 'The boys these days go where there's money. I wanted to make a video the other day and say thanks to the boys for everything, but I saw where they went [Chiefs],' Josephs said on Soccer Beat. 'I mean, these boys don't have ambitions after crossing the road like that. The team on the yellow side will be posting our players. There's no loyalty in this game anymore and pride for the badge anymore.' On Monday, Pirates also made the shock announcement that they had appointed Abdeslam Ouaddou as the new head coach of the club. Speculation had been rife as to who would take over the coaching role after José Riveiro did not renew his contract at the end of last season. 'Kaizer Chiefs are toothless, like me'
Orlando Pirates legend Moeneeb Josephs says Kaizer Chiefs were found wanting against the Buccaneers on Saturday afternoon at the FNB Stadium. Goals from Evidence Makgopa and Relebohile Mofokeng were enough to see the Buccaneers complete a league double over their Soweto rivals. Amakhosi scored in the second minute through Makabi Lilepo; however, the Sea Robbers came back to earn a 2-1 victory over Chiefs. Speaking on Soccer Beat podcast, Josephs expressed his disappointment in Orlando Pirates' early approach to the game, which allowed Kaizer Chiefs to score. 'We have had a rotten week for us as supporters and players,' said the former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper. 'We have had one of our worst weeks this season. After the four minutes we conceded, we never looked at ourselves, we just never looked at ourselves. All of a sudden, we just picked up our character and showed our old self again.' 'I said it on Twitter first, I said 'Kaizer Chiefs is like me, they are toothless, Mr Du Toit'. They never came to beat us, they were too scared to lose,' Josephs said. The Buccaneers have now beaten Chiefs in five consecutive matches. The two teams will face each other again next weekend in the Nedbank Cup final.
