Orang Asli teen detained after toddler mauled to death by stray dogs
KUALA LUMPUR: A 19-year-old Orang Asli teen has been detained by police to assist in an investigation into the death of a toddler, believed to have been fatally mauled by dogs.
Sungai Buloh police chief, Superintendent Mohd Hafiz Muhammad Nor, said the teen, from the Temuan tribe, was arrested around 11.50am under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001.
He said a post-mortem examination confirmed that the cause of death was the result of a violent dog attack.
"The post-mortem conducted by the Forensic Department at Sungai Buloh Hospital found the cause of death to be 'neck injury due to canine mauling', meaning the child suffered a brutal attack and bites from a dog," he said in a statement today.
Earlier reports indicated that a young couple, returning home from work, found their son, who had been left in the care of his uncle, dead about 20m from their house in an Orang Asli settlement.
The incident occurred on Tuesday morning. The couple noticed their front door was ajar and their one-year and seven-month-old toddler was missing from the house.
They called out his name but received no response. After searching the area, they found the child surrounded by stray dogs, who had attacked and mauled him to death.
Following the incident, police recorded statements from three individuals, including family members of the toddler, as part of the ongoing investigation.
