Bersatu proposes united opposition front

PETALING JAYA: Bersatu is proposing the formation of a united opposition front involving parties outside the government bloc to coordinate a joint stand on matters affecting the people. According to party secretary-general Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali, the proposal was put forward during the party's supreme leadership council (MPT) meeting and will be discussed at the Perikatan Nasional presidential council meeting later this weekend. He said that the party leaders have also agreed to have party president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin lead the efforts to initiate this collaboration. Azmin added that Muhyiddin had also instructed Bersatu leaders to intensify groundwork in key constituencies ahead of the Sabah state election. "The MPT is confident that the people of Sabah are receptive to and support the struggle of Bersatu and Perikatan Nasional," he said in a statement on Tuesday (July 15). The council also confirmed the party's annual general assembly will take place on Sept 6–7 in Shah Alam, Selangor, with a ninth-anniversary dinner to be held on the final night, expected to host over 2,000 guests. Azmin said the council had also approved the launch of the Infaq Bersatu fundraising programme, inviting contributions from the public to support its pro-rakyat agenda. Additionally, he said that Bersatu would mobilise its leaders and supporters for the "Himpunan Turun Anwar" rally at Dataran Merdeka on July 26, scheduled to begin at 2pm. "This peaceful gathering aims to defend the Constitution and the rule of law, and to stand against oppression," said Azmin.

S'gor Opposition snubs gas blast briefing, demands transparency

SHAH ALAM: Lawmakers from Selangor's Opposition bloc are boycotting the technical briefing on the Putra Heights gas pipeline explosion scheduled for this evening (July 7). The decision, announced by Selangor Opposition leader Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali ( pic ), was due to concerns over the briefing being conducted behind closed doors, which he argues undermines accountability and transparency. 'Despite our absence from the briefing, we are committed to actively participating in the debate when the issue is addressed during the Selangor State Assembly sitting starting tomorrow (July 8),' Mohamed Azmin said. Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari had previously announced that a special technical briefing by agencies would be held today after the state assembly sitting for all MPs and state assemblymen in Selangor regarding the gas pipeline explosion in Putra Heights. Mohamed Azmin said the Opposition bloc was also unhappy that a motion brought up by Taman Medan assemblyman Dr Afif Bahardin was rejected by Selangor Speaker Lau Weng San. 'The motion was to request a special state assembly sitting to debate the Putra Heights gas pipeline incident,' said Mohamed Azmin. 'Afif had on July 4, submitted a petition on behalf of 20 residents affected by the blast. This petition was submitted in the interest of public safety and administrative transparency. 'However, the motion was rejected by the Speaker on the grounds that the number of people who signed the petition was too few, and some were not voters from the area.' The Hulu Kelang assemblyman said he also submitted an urgent motion under Standing Order 17(1) urging the government to release the full investigation report on the Putra Heights gas pipeline explosion incident. "This is because the initial report was inconclusive, not comprehensive and failed to answer many critical questions,' said Mohamed Azmin, who said that a White Paper on the matter must be presented in a special assembly. "We want to delve into the factors that triggered the incident, for example, whether there was negligence involved and possible failures in the planning approval process in granting the right-of-way access.' The Bersatu politician added that the Opposition bloc also wants a thorough investigation to be carried out and for the planning permission approval process by local councils to be tightened.

Perikatan confirms Solaris Dutamas HQ shut after lease ended, denies claims of unpaid rent

KUALA LUMPUR, July 6 — Perikatan Nasional's (PN) headquarters in Solaris Dutamas, Kuala Lumpur has been closed following the expiry of its two-year lease in April, the coalition's secretary-general Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali has confirmed. Azmin said the decision not to renew the lease was reached through mutual agreement between the landlord and tenant, and was approved by PN's top leadership. 'This matter was informed to and agreed upon by the PN top leadership,' he was quoted saying by Sinar Harian. 'Nonetheless, the administration and operations of the PN headquarters continue as usual, handled by officers and staff at an unofficial location, while a new premises is being prepared.' He also criticised media reports claiming the closure was due to unpaid rent dating back to March, calling them unfounded and irresponsible. Meanwhile, Selangor PN secretary Dr Afif Bahardin said the coalition remains operational despite being without a physical office for now. 'We didn't shut down [operations], but the [rental] contract has ended. We are in the middle of finding a new location to turn into an office,' he told Malaysiakini. He said meetings are ongoing and there is no issue of the party ceasing operations. The Solaris Dutamas office had served as the venue for PN Supreme Council meetings since the coalition was formed in 2020. PN deputy chairman Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin was previously quoted saying he was unaware of the specific circumstances of the closure, stating that such matters were under Azmin's purview.
