Mohamed Tarek Discusses Building Bridges Between Arab Film Festivals at Cannes 78

The session highlighted the importance of collaboration among Arab film festivals to support local and regional filmmakers, focusing on creating a strong network of festivals working together to advance the film industry in the region. Mohamed Tarek commented: "We discussed how this is a significant step for Arab festivals (4 major Arab festivals coming together for the first time) and how collaboration is the way forward for the development of films and festivals. We also talked about how to organize premiere screenings in the region without making them a barrier for audiences to access important Arab films." The session was held inside the Egyptian Pavilion at Cannes Film Market (Marché du Film), organized jointly by Cairo International Film Festival, El Gouna Film Festival, and the Egypt Film Commission (EFC). The panel will explore the creative contributions of a new generation of Arab directors who are reshaping the cinematic landscape, and how festivals can empower them to achieve international success. Two additional panels will be hosted at the Egyptian Pavilion, focusing on co-production opportunities and promoting Egypt as a global filmmaking destination. Beyond the pavilion, Hussein Fahmy will join a major panel at the Palais des Festivals titled 'Egypt: The Arab World's Blockbuster Capital.' Organized by the Arab Cinema Center and MDF_Cannes, and moderated by Variety's Italy & Middle East correspondent Nick Vivarelli, the session will spotlight Egypt's longstanding leadership in the Arab film industry and its role in exporting globally successful films. It will gather key players from across the Egyptian and Arab cinematic landscape. Mohamed Tarek will also participate in a closed session titled 'Truth or Dare?' within the Short Film Corner (SFC), a program under Cinéma de Demain dedicated to supporting emerging talents. The session offers one-on-one 20-minute meetings between short and feature film professionals and emerging filmmakers, providing constructive feedback and mentorship for selected projects. Under the Fantastic 7 initiative, jointly organized with the Marché du Film, the Iraqi project Ayin Hara has been selected to represent CIFF. Previously supported by Cairo Industry Days, the project has attracted attention from international producers and distributors, reaffirming CIFF's role in amplifying Arab talent on the world stage. Notably, Cairo Industry Days also supported Life After Siham by Namir Abdel Messiah, which will be screened in the ACID section of the 78th Cannes Film Festival. Cairo International Film Festival opens submissions for 46th edition
Early bird submissions are now open until May 31, 2025. The Cairo International Film Festival (CIFF) has officially opened film submissions for its 46th edition, which is scheduled to take place from November 12 to 21, 2025. Filmmakers from around the world are now invited to submit their works through the festival's official website, with the submission window remaining open until August 1. An early bird submission period is available through May 31. Speaking about the event, Hussein Fahmy, Festival's President, said: 'We are pleased to announce the opening of submissions for the 46th edition of Cairo International Film Festival. Cairo International Film Festival Opens Submissions for the 11th Cairo Film Connection
Ali abo dashish Cairo International Film Festival (CIFF) has announced the opening of submissions for the 11th edition of the Cairo Film Connection, part of the festival's 46th edition, scheduled to take place from November 12 to 21, 2025. Applications will be accepted from May 7 through August 1, 2025, via the festival's official website: Cairo Film Connection is a professional platform dedicated to supporting feature-length narrative and documentary projects from the Arab world, in both development and post-production stages. It aims to empower Arab filmmakers by providing financial grants, production services, and valuable opportunities to connect with key producers, funders, and distributors from across the globe. Renowned actor Hussein Fahmy, President of CIFF, commented: "At CIFF, we strongly believe that supporting filmmakers from the region is fundamental to the growth of Arab cinema. Cairo Film Connection has become a true platform for launching promising projects. In recent years, numerous projects supported by Cairo Film Connection have gone on to represent Arab cinema at major international festivals. Notable examples include: "Four Daughters" by Tunisian director Kaouther Ben Hania, "Inshallah a Boy" by Jordanian director Amjad Al-Rasheed, "Goodbye Julia" by Sudanese director Mohamed Kordofani, and "The Brink of Dreams" by Egyptian director Namir Abdel Messeeh. Mohamed Sayed Abdel Rahim, Head of Cairo Industry Days, stated: "Over the past ten years, the Cairo Film Connection has solidified its position as one of the most vital development platforms in the Arab region—not only because of the awards and funding it offers, but also because of the caliber of films it helps bring to life." The previous edition in November 2024 hosted 18 projects from 13 Arab countries, with participants receiving 31 awards exceeding $220,000 in combined value, including cash prizes and in-kind services offered by local and international production and distribution partners. Eligible projects must be feature-length (narrative or documentary) films in either the development or post-production phase, submitted by filmmakers from Arab countries. The director must be of Arab nationality or origin.
