Hodeida sees traffic incidents during Eid vacation

Hodeida - Saba: During the Eid Al-Fitr holiday, Hodeida Governorate witnessed a series of traffic accidents, resulting in deaths and injuries. This comes amid calls to strengthen traffic safety measures and increase awareness to prevent further road accidents. Statistics from the governorate's Traffic Department indicate that 35 traffic accidents were recorded during the holiday period, resulting in the deaths of eight people and the injury of 86 others with varying degrees of severity, including 64 serious injuries, distributed among 49 males and 15 females, in addition to 22 minor injuries. The accidents varied between direct collisions between vehicles, which were the deadliest, and 11 pedestrian run-overs, in addition to 14 car-motorcycle collisions, two motorcycle accidents, and six vehicle rollovers. The Director General of Hodeida Traffic, Colonel Mohammed Al-Nuwaira, reported that the material losses resulting from these accidents exceeded 40 million riyals. He explained that excessive speed, technical malfunctions in vehicles, negligence by drivers, driving in the wrong direction, incorrect overtaking, sudden entry, and inattention while driving were the main causes of the accidents. Hodeida's roads and highways experience heavy traffic during holidays and special occasions, as thousands of citizens flock to the coast, markets, and recreational areas. This increases the likelihood of accidents, given some drivers' failure to adhere to traffic regulations. The Traffic Department stressed the need to adhere to traffic rules and laws, especially when traveling on long roads and on the governorate's main streets. It urged drivers to take necessary precautions, adhere to speed limits, and not risk their lives or the lives of others. She emphasized the need to regularly inspect vehicles to ensure their technical safety and to avoid being distracted by using mobile phones while driving. The Traffic Department urged drivers to respect traffic signals at intersections and stop at red lights to ensure everyone's safety. These accidents occurred despite the Traffic Department's extensive efforts to enhance field monitoring and intensify awareness campaigns aimed at raising traffic awareness among drivers and pedestrians. The Department continues to implement its guidance programs and regulatory measures to reduce accidents, in addition to increasing the presence of traffic patrols on public roads and city entrances during peak periods. This has contributed to reducing losses compared to previous years, despite the challenges and heavy traffic during the Eid season. The Director General of the Governorate's Traffic Department confirmed that the Department is continuing to implement its field and awareness plans, calling on everyone to cooperate and adhere to traffic rules to protect lives and property. He emphasized that traffic safety is a shared societal responsibility that requires the concerted efforts of all, including strengthening the role of families in educating their children about the need to adhere to traffic rules, in addition to cooperating with relevant authorities to provide a safe traffic environment for all.
