Perak seeks rice quota hike for Bumiputera manufacturers
BAGAN SERAI: The Perak government plans to appeal to the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM) for a higher rice supply quota, particularly for Bumiputera manufacturers. This move aims to address current shortages and strengthen national food security. State Rural Development, Plantation, Agriculture, and Food Industry Committee chairman Datuk Mohd Zolkafly Harun stressed the need for fair distribution between large and small manufacturers to stabilise rice production. He cited Yop Zainan Sdn Bhd, a 54-year-old local company, as an example. Despite its long-standing operation, the firm only receives a monthly quota of 300 tonnes, which falls short of domestic demand. 'I will raise this issue with Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu during his visit to Perak next week. We hope eligible manufacturers can secure an increased quota of up to 500 tonnes monthly,' he said after visiting Gudang Beras Yop Zainan in Kampung Masjid Batu, Kuala Kurau. The initiative aligns with Sultan Nazrin Shah's call to prioritise food security. Mohd Zolkafly noted that Perak's rice production should not only meet local needs but also support other states. Under the Perak Sejahtera 2030 Plan, the state is ramping up food security measures through various programmes. Additionally, the state is considering rebranding Yop Zainan's Beras Baiduri Cap Gajus as 'Beras Perak.' The proposal will be presented to the state executive council and, if approved, to Sultan Nazrin Shah. The official launch is targeted during Perak Agrofest from Sept 26 to 28. – Bernama

Only 23.4 Pct Of Youths Involved In Agriculture Sector In Perak
GOPENG, June 23 (Bernama) -- Only 23.4 per cent of youths aged 15 to 45 in Perak ventured into agriculture in 2023, said Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin. He said that individuals aged 60 and above accounted for 46.6 per cent of those involved in the sector, followed by those aged 46 to 59 at 30 per cent. 'This participation gap between the older and younger generations is not only concerning but also signals an insecure future if no drastic measures are taken. 'The lack of young manpower, difficulties in adopting modern technology, and negative perceptions of careers in this sector are the main obstacles,' he said. He spoke to reporters at the launch of the Agriculture Census 2024 Interim Report held at the state Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA) management building, Rural Transformation Centre (RTC) Gopeng, here today. Also present were the state Rural Development, Plantation, Agriculture and Food Industry Committee chairman, Datuk Mohd Zolkafly Harun, and Perak Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM), Mohd Ridauddin Masud. Mohd Uzir said efforts to revitalise the agricultural sector in Perak are crucial to ensure its sustainability and competitiveness. 'The future of the agricultural sector depends on how well we can reignite the interest of the younger generation to return to the farms, not only as workers but as leaders driving the transformation of the nation's agro-industry,' he said. In addition, he said Perak recorded a total agricultural output sales value of RM15.98 billion throughout 2023.

Perak offers land to boost agriculture, food security
SUNGAI SIPUT: The Perak government is offering land to agro-entrepreneurs in every district in a bid to strengthen the state's agricultural industry and food security. State Rural Development, Plantation, Agriculture and Food Industry Committee chairman Datuk Mohd Zolkafly Harun said anyone interested can submit applications to the nearest district and land office (PDT). 'The state government, through the PDT in each district, is ready to assist interested agro-entrepreneurs in acquiring or expanding land via Temporary Occupation Licences to carry out agricultural activities. 'This also demonstrates the state government's commitment to encouraging agro-entrepreneurs to expand their cultivation, thereby contributing not only to the people of Perak but also beyond,' he said. He was speaking at a press conference after attending the Dialogue and Handover Ceremony for Marketing Contract Partner Equipment 2025 at the Farm Collection Centre in Kampung Tersusun Kledang Utama here today. On July 11 last year, Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad announced that the state government had, in principle, allocated land resources for agricultural development, including areas gazetted as Food Security Zones and any suitable state-owned land in Perak. Regarding today's programme, Zolkafly said the agricultural equipment contributed by the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA) to farmers under the Marketing Contract Partner (RPKP) programme is expected to help optimise production and increase income generation. 'The provision of equipment such as digital and analogue weighing machines, cash registers, plastic pallets, hand trolleys and so on is hoped to ease the work of the estimated 20 farmers involved in this RPKP programme,' he said. Meanwhile, FAMA deputy director-general (operations) Shahrizan Sudiman said that, to date, 62 agro-entrepreneurs and 650 farmers are directly involved in the RPKP programme nationwide.
