Perak seeks rice quota hike for Bumiputera manufacturers
This move aims to address current shortages and strengthen national food security.
State Rural Development, Plantation, Agriculture, and Food Industry Committee chairman Datuk Mohd Zolkafly Harun stressed the need for fair distribution between large and small manufacturers to stabilise rice production.
He cited Yop Zainan Sdn Bhd, a 54-year-old local company, as an example.
Despite its long-standing operation, the firm only receives a monthly quota of 300 tonnes, which falls short of domestic demand.
'I will raise this issue with Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu during his visit to Perak next week. We hope eligible manufacturers can secure an increased quota of up to 500 tonnes monthly,' he said after visiting Gudang Beras Yop Zainan in Kampung Masjid Batu, Kuala Kurau.
The initiative aligns with Sultan Nazrin Shah's call to prioritise food security.
Mohd Zolkafly noted that Perak's rice production should not only meet local needs but also support other states.
Under the Perak Sejahtera 2030 Plan, the state is ramping up food security measures through various programmes.
Additionally, the state is considering rebranding Yop Zainan's Beras Baiduri Cap Gajus as 'Beras Perak.'
The proposal will be presented to the state executive council and, if approved, to Sultan Nazrin Shah.
The official launch is targeted during Perak Agrofest from Sept 26 to 28. – Bernama

Ministry targets 350 Agro Madani sales programmes in Sarawak this year

The Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food Security said the programmes are part of the ministry's efforts to help reduce the cost of living while supporting local farmers and entrepreneurs by providing direct market access without intermediaries. 'As of July 31, Fama Sarawak has implemented 46 programmes with total sales amounting to RM191,062.10,' he said during a press conference after launching the National Month special edition of Jualan Agro Madani at the compounds of Masjid Al-Malik, Taman Unigarden here today. Arthur added that the figures reflect only the first month of implementation, as the current cycle began in July. He noted that Sarawak recorded RM7.58 million in sales last year through 473 programmes involving 3,459 entrepreneurs. Nationwide, 495 Agro Madani sales have been held so far in this cycle. The ministry is targeting 3,500 programmes this year, with projected sales of RM52.5 million, expected savings of RM15.75 million, and participation from 52,500 entrepreneurs reaching 1.75 million consumers. In 2024, 7,295 Agro Madani sales programmes were held, generating RM162.45 million in sales, benefiting 92,065 entrepreneurs and reaching 4.28 million consumers, with household savings amounting to RM43.64 million. Arthur said that public demand for Agro Madani sales is high, with the possibility of exceeding this year's target, similar to last year, when the nationwide goal of 5,000 programmes was surpassed, reaching 7,295. 'By bringing products directly from farms to consumers, we help the public enjoy savings of between 10 and 30 per cent, while also boosting product marketing and sales for our entrepreneurs,' he said. Today's special edition event in Kota Samarahan featured various activities, including the Happy Hour Sale (Jualan Agro Madani), the Eat Local Fruits Campaign, and the distribution of pineapples to visitors, organised in collaboration with the N17 Stakan Service Centre. Also present at the event were Stakan assemblyman Datuk Hamzah Ibrahim dan Fama director-general Abdul Rashid Bahri.

2,153 aquaculture entrepreneurs nationwide receive MyGAP certification
JERTIH: The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security has issued a total of 2,153 Good Aquaculture Practice (MyGAP) certifications to aquaculture industry players across Malaysia. Department of Fisheries deputy director-general (Management) Yeo Moi Eim noted steady growth in certifications over the past five years, with Terengganu showing significant progress. A total of 45 MyGAP certifications have been awarded in Terengganu, including 25 to fish farmers in Besut district. Yeo attributed this growth to increased awareness among operators, driven by DOF initiatives such as workshops and promotional campaigns. She spoke to reporters after the opening ceremony of a MyGAP seminar and fisheries incentives presentation at Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin's Besut Campus. The event was officiated by Terengganu Agriculture, Agro-based Industry, Food Security and Commodities Committee chairman Datuk Dr Azman Ibrahim. Yeo explained that MyGAP certification recognises aquaculture entrepreneurs who meet standards for producing safe, high-quality products. She emphasised that the certification reflects social responsibility, ensuring farm operations avoid environmental pollution and use safe ingredients. Meanwhile, Azman stated the Terengganu government aims to help 500 farmers obtain MyGAP certification within two years.
