Box Office: A Minecraft Movie approaches USD 950M, likely to miss billion mark but still leads 2025 Hollywood chart

A Minecraft Movie continues to leave a mark at the global box office, edging closer to the USD 950 million milestone. While it now appears unlikely to reach the coveted billion-dollar mark, the Jared Hess-directed video game adaptation remains the highest-grossing Hollywood release of 2025 so far. Based on Mojang Studios' massively popular sandbox game, A Minecraft Movie released in early April to mixed reviews but exceeded commercial expectations thanks to a robust reception from younger audiences. Despite a lukewarm 48 percent critic score on Rotten Tomatoes and a modest 5.7/10 rating on IMDb, the film received an 86 percent audience approval and generated buzz around sequences like the much-anticipated chicken jockey moment. Starring Jack Black and Jason Momoa, the film has so far collected around USD 940 million worldwide, with USD 420 million from domestic markets and another USD 520 million internationally. The theatrical run began slowing down after Warner Bros pulled the film from over 1,300 US theaters to accommodate its more recent releases. Its recent availability on PVOD platforms has also impacted its box office momentum. Despite missing the million-dollar mark, A Minecraft Movie is a massive win for WB, as before this title, the studio was struggling with the underperformance of Mickey 17, starring Robert Pattinson and helmed by Bong Joon Ho. A Minecraft Movie now ranks among the top 70 highest-grossing films of all time globally and sits among the studio's 10 most successful theatrical endeavors ever. Had it crossed the billion-dollar threshold, it would have marked the second billion-dollar outing for both Black (The Super Mario Bros. Movie) and Momoa (Aquaman). Adding to its success, the film is slated for a physical media release on June 24, with Blu-ray, DVD, and a limited edition Steelbook version hitting the market. Bonus content includes featurettes like Building the World of Minecraft: Block Party and Block Beats, offering fans a deeper look into the film's production and soundtrack. Looking ahead, a sequel to A Minecraft Movie has been announced, with Warner Bros co-chairs recently confirming that plans for a follow-up are in motion, suggesting the studio is eager to turn the film into a franchise. A Minecraft Movie remains available in select theaters in the US and internationally for those interested.

Box Office: A Minecraft Movie surpasses USD 925M globally, continues climbing despite digital release

Despite its recent digital debut, A Minecraft Movie continues to draw in global audiences, pushing its worldwide box office total to a staggering USD 929 million. Based on Mojang Studios' 2011 sandbox game, the fantasy adventure comedy has become the second-highest-grossing video game adaptation of all time, trailing only behind The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which remains the only title in the genre to surpass the USD 1 billion mark. Directed by Jared Hess and featuring a star-studded cast including Jason Momoa, Jack Black, Danielle Brooks, Emma Myers, and Sebastian Hansen, A Minecraft Movie follows a group of misfits who are transported into the blocky world of Minecraft. With the help of a seasoned in-game character named Steve, they must navigate the pixelated realm to return to reality. The film had a long and perilous development history. Warner Bros. Pictures began work on the adaptation in 2014, with multiple changes in creative leadership over the years. It wasn't until 2022 that the project gained renewed momentum, with Hess stepping in as director and Legendary Entertainment coming on board. Production took place in New Zealand, wrapping in early 2024. Released globally on April 4, 2025, the film was met with mixed reviews from critics but found a massive audience among families and fans of the game. The film's colorful animation, nostalgia-fueled humor, and action-packed quest resonated strongly with viewers, helping it gross the aforementioned worldwide total against a reported budget of USD 150 million. Now available on premium video-on-demand platforms such as Prime Video and Apple TV, the movie can be rented for USD 19.99 or purchased digitally for USD 24.99. Once rented, viewers have 30 days to begin watching and 48 hours to complete it once started. However, with its theatrical momentum slowing and a wide digital release now in place, A Minecraft Movie may ultimately fall short of the coveted billion-dollar milestone. While that means The Super Mario Bros. Movie will likely retain its crown as the top-earning video game adaptation for now, Minecraft has still proven itself a powerful force on the global theatrical stage. Regardless of whether it crosses the billion-dollar mark, the film's near-record run solidifies its place as one of 2025's biggest success stories and establishes a strong case for future game-to-screen endeavors.

A scene with the Piglins in "A Minecraft Movie." Not long after 'Chicken Jockey' screenings were held for A Minecraft Movie, Warner Bros. is encouraging rowdy behavior at an upcoming 'Block Party Edition' of the film. A Minecraft Movie, of course, is based on Mojang Studios' blockbuster video game Minecraft. Starring Jack Black and Jason Momoa, A Minecraft Movie earned $22.7 million in its fourth weekend frame Friday through Sunday to boost its domestic tally to $379.9 million. Along with the film's international ticket sales of $436 million, A Minecraft Movie has grossed $815.9 million to date against a $150 million budget, per The Numbers. While A Minecraft Movie has been very good to theater owners in terms of business since the film's April 4 release, there have also been reports of fans wreaking havoc at showings of A Minecraft Movie. Now, in an apparent movie to capitalize on the over-enthusiastic response to the film, Warner Bros. announced on Monday that a special 'Block Party Edition' of the movie will be held in select theaters and some international markets, aptly named for the film's block-shaped characters. 'Fans across North America and in select international markets can embrace the film anew by singing — or meme-ing — along with their favorite moments from the movie,' Warner Bros. announced in a press release. 'A Minecraft Movie: Block Party Edition! is made for those who yearn for the mines, so get ready to (re)enter the Overworld this weekend! Also in its announcement about how fans can 'experience A Minecraft Movie together in a whole new way,' the Warner Bros. press release added, 'You know the moments. You know the lines. You love the songs! Now it's time to get loose, laugh out loud and belt out those lyrics like a true diamond-tier fan.' Friday, coincidentally, kicks off summer movie season with the release of Disney and Marvel Studios' Thunderbolts*, the announcement of A Minecraft Movie: Block Party Edition! suddenly creates more competition for the latest chapter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. "Chicken Jockey" scene from "A Minecraft Movie." In an X post announcing the screenings, Regal Cinemas said, 'Level up your experience of A Minecraft Movie with our Chicken Jockey screening exclusively in 4DX. Dress up as your favorite Minecraft characters, whoop, yelp, clap and shout CHICKEN JOCKEY.' Prior to Regal Cinemas' 'Chicken Jockey' screenings, at least one fan of A Minecraft Movie was caught on camera taking his love of scene to next level by hoisting a live chicken in air during the scene. Directed by Jared Hess and also starring Emma Myers, Sebastian Hansen and Danielle Brooks, A Minecraft Movie is playing in theaters nationwide.

‘A Minecraft Movie' Looks To Edge ‘Sinners' At Weekend Box Office

"A Minecraft Movie" partial poster. Although Sinners is giving A Minecraft Movie a run for its money, the latter is looking like it will win the domestic box office for a third consecutive weekend. Written and directed by Ryan Coogler and starring Michael B. Jordan in dual roles, the vampire thriller Sinners opened Friday in 3,308 North American theaters. The film played in Thursday previews where it earned $4.7 million. While Sinners is projected to earn $18 million on Friday — $1.5 million more than A Minecraft Movie — Deadline is projecting that Jack Black and Jason Momoa's big-screen adaptation of Mojang Studios' iconic video game Minecraft will once again win the Easter Weekend box office. A Minecraft Movie, which opened on April 4 and earned $163 million in its opening frame and $78.5 million more last weekend, is projected by Deadline to earn $44 million from 4,032 North American theaters through Sunday. Sinners, meanwhile is projected by Deadline to earn $40 million in its opening weekend frame for a No. 2 finish. The numbers for both films fall closely in line with pre-release projections from most of Hollywood's trade publications, which targeted a $40 million to $45 million take for A Minecraft Movie. Deadline, however, gave the edge to A Minecraft Movie with an estimated take of $47 million. Variety, though, projected that Sinners could earn anywhere from $40 million to $50 million. Either way, Warner Bros. is the big winner at this weekend's box office since it's the studio behind both A Minecraft Movie and Sinners. A Minecraft Movie eclipsed the $300 million mark in ticket sales Thursday when it earned $6.5 million to boost its domestic tally to $303.3 million heading into Friday. Combined with its $273.3 million in international receipts, A Minecraft Movie ended the day Thursday with $576.6 million in earnings at the worldwide box office. Michael B Jordan plays twins in "Sinners." While A Minecraft Movie and Sinners are poised to take the No. 1 and 2 spots at the domestic box office, Angel Studios' The King of Kings may end up being the weekend's biggest success story. The animated biblical movie is projected by Deadline to earn $17 million from Friday through Easter Sunday — a mere $2 million less than its recording-breaking opening frame from April 11-14. Should the projection hold up, it will boost The King of King's domestic tally to $45 million. Two other films that opened last week— 20th Century Studio's The Amateur and A24's Warfare — are projected by Deadline to earn $8 million and $4 million, respectively to take the No. 4 and 5 spots at this weekend's domestic box office. Note: This box office report will be updated throughout the weekend with the most recent numbers as they become available. The final numbers for this weekend's box office will be released on Monday.

Minecraft director confirms sequel is already being talked about after record-breaking opening

A Minecraft Movie director Jared Hess has confirmed that work on a sequel is already underway following its record-breaking success. The fantasy adventure film, based on Mojang Studios' 2011 video game, has proved to be a huge financial success thus far, with the film already the fourth highest-grossing of the year despite only being released on Friday (April 4). Furthermore, A Minecraft Movie also boasts the biggest three-day opening for a video game adaptation in the US, with the enormous commercial success leading producers to already begin work on a sequel. Related: In an interview with Deadline, Hess expressed his excitement for the potential follow-up film, teasing that there were several elements from the game that could be incorporated into the sequel. 'Oh, man. Well, it would be so much fun,' the filmmaker said. 'We had so much fun making this movie, and it's such an expansive world in the game, and there were so many things that we didn't tap into that we wanted to. Related: 'I would have a blast doing the sequel, and it seems like there's already talk about it happening, so I'm super excited. It'll be so much fun to go back into the world. The fans are just having such a good time. We teased it in the end credits, and the fans seem to be going wild for it.' Hess, who previously directed Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre, confirmed that Alex – who was voiced by Kate McKinnon in the post-credits scene – would be a figure who they 'bring to the table' for the sequel, describing them as a 'critical character' from the franchise. A Minecraft Movie follows a group of misfits – played by Jason Momoa, Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks and Sebastian Hansen – as they are pulled through a portal into a strange cubic world, embarking on a quest back to the real world with the help of expert crafter Steve (Jack Black).
