Sky Sports make Gary Lineker and Match of the Day gaffe as BBC forced to intervene

BBC had to contact Sky after they made an error of their own regarding their Match of the Day coverage with a picture of Gary Lineker still included despite his exit The BBC had to step in and contact Sky after Gary Lineker still appeared on their Match of the Day page despite leaving the corporation this year. ‌ Viewers who watch the highlights programme via Sky can do so through the broadcaster's pages, but they had not yet changed the picture of Lineker. The BBC reportedly made it known to their counterparts at Sky, who had also spotted the error and claimed it was a 'technical mistake', reports the Daily Mail. ‌ Lineker's image was quickly removed ahead of Mark Chapman taking charge of his first show on Saturday night. The long-time broadcaster will share the gig with Gabby Logan and Kelly Cates, who will work with the BBC and Sky this year. ‌ Chapman made light of the wholesale changes that were made, with Lineker spending more than 20 years as the show's broadcaster. He was quick to putt the attention on Wayne Rooney, who joins the panel as a pundit alongside Alan Shearer. He said as the show began: 'The Premier League is back and Match of the Day is back. You may have seen and heard there's a big change to the show this season, and that is that Wayne Rooney has joined is us as a regular pundit. Some things don't change though, and Alan (Shearer) is still here.' Chapman has previously hosted Match of the Day when Lineker was unavailable and was the regular host of the Sunday show, Match of the Day 2. The new presenters will rotate throughout the season, sharing equal airtime on Saturday and Sunday's shows as well as Match of the Day: Champions League on Wednesday. Chapman has been hosting Match of the Day 2 for 12 years and also has a range of other roles throughout the corporation, including on BBC Radio 5 Live and the Monday Night Club. He, like Cates, also presents coverage for Sky Sports, doing so for the Carabao Cup. Lineker's final show came at the end of last season on 26 May with a hugely emotional video bringing the curtain down on his lengthy tenure, reducing the former England international to tears. The 64-year-old had planned to front the BBC's coverage of the FA Cup and 2026 World Cup, but his exit was bought forward following social media fallout after he shared a post about Zionism featuring a depiction of a rat, historically used as an antisemitic trope.

Carlos Baleba 'approves Manchester United move' with Brighton braced for second bid

Manchester United are set to make a second bid for Carlos Baleba this week after making the Brighton midfielder their next key transfer target. United have already spent more than £200million on Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko to transform their forward line, and now Ruben Amorim wants to bolster his ongoing concerns over Casemiro's declining powers and the inconsistent performances of Manuel Ugarte, United have turned to 21-year-old Baleba as the answer to revitalise their midfield. It has been reported that a first bid for Baleba has been rejected, in which United tried to include Toby Collyer in part-exchange. Brighton have little interest in selling and have put a £105million price tag on the player's head. United are not giving up, though. Journalist Fabrizio Romano reports that new talks are expected between the two clubs over the coming days and, crucially, Baleba wants to make the move. It remains to be seen if Brighton's stance will relax in light of the player's wish. Asked if he fears losing key players to bigger clubs this summer, Brighton head coach Fabian Hurzeler told BBC Sport's Monday Night Club podcast: "No chance. I don't feel fear. "I'm not afraid of anything because the only thing we can do is be the best version we can be every day, like work as hard as we can. All the other things we can't influence, so we really have to focus on us. "For sure, we can't spend the money like the big teams but one of our biggest values is togetherness. And if you stay together, if we try to push our limits and increase the boundaries, then I'm sure we can compete with the big teams."

'They could win it if they keep their squad together'

Former England midfielder Izzy Christiansen says only time will tell whether Crystal Palace's demotion to the Conference League "will be a blessing in disguise". Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live's Monday Night Club, Christiansen recognised the frustration after they lost their appeal, but said that "cannot move away from the fact Oliver Glasner has done a wonderful job" to get them this far. "He has won two trophies and you would probably back them to compete into the late stages of the Conference League as well," said Christiansen. "They could win it if they keep their squad together. "That then would then be a third consecutive trophy and that shows huge success for them as a club. "The manager has been given time to build and I think they have the most exciting front three in the league when Jean-Philippe Mateta, Eberechi Eze and Ismaila Sarr are on form." Bramall appointed 'on merit'

Former Premier League referee Chris Foy said Thomas Bramall's decision on Sunday was an "unfortunate incident" but that many referees "would have given a foul in that situation". Bramall blew for a foul when Morgan Rogers nudged the ball away from Manchester United goalkeeper Altay Bayindir before the Villa midfielder put the ball in the net. Bramall thought Bayindir had two hands on the ball, though television footage suggested otherwise, and because he stopped play before the ball crossed the line, the video assistant referee (VAR) could not intervene. Foy told BBC Radio 5 Live's Monday Night Club he was "impressed" by Bramall's showing in Manchester City's 3-1 win over Bournemouth on 20 May - a match that featured a straight red card for each side. Foy added: "He's been given the [Villa] game on merit, he was worthy of his appointment. "Unfortunately we're talking about one decision because he made a really good decision to send the goalkeeper off and took his time to give the penalty. "He was going really well but unfortunately we're talking about this one decision." Former Villa goalkeeper Shay Given said Bramall will "learn" and "grow" from this situation. "Let's not forget Thomas Bramall is a human being," he added. "I find it more difficult when VAR with all different angles make wrong decisions. This guy has just made a human error, it's more forgivable." Listen to the Monday Night Club's discussion on the incident on BBC Sounds

Sutton on 'extremes' of Europa League final

On the latest episode of BBC Radio 5 Live's Monday Night Club, the panel discusses the upcoming Europa League final between Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United. Both clubs are in the bottom half of the Premier League table, with victory in the final their only route into European competition next season. "There is so much fear running through both managers, in terms of if anything happens to key players," former Premier League striker Chris Sutton said. "Tottenham don't have momentum, Manchester United don't have momentum. This could be one of the worst Europa League finals ever, in terms of two teams going into it who have both been utterly useless. "For two enormous Premier League clubs, the extremes of this game - it is going to be an absolute catastrophe for the losing manager." Watch the full episode on BBC iPlayer or listen on BBC Sounds
