Amal Clooney Teases the Strict Cannes Dress Code in an Archival John Galliano for Dior Gown

Cannes Film Festival's new dress code is likely to catch out a plethora of attendees, but Amal Clooney isn't one of them. Kristen Stewart subtly challenged the "decency" dress code in a sheer skirt and Eva Longoria's sequin dress appeared to ignore any naked dress rules. Clooney, however, ensured she wouldn't be turned away from the red carpet by wearing a jaw-dropping, floor-length gown, albeit with a low-cut neckline and beautiful train. On Friday, May 16, Clooney made an unexpected solo appearance on the Cannes Film Festival red carpet ahead of a screening of Bono: Stories of Surrender. For the prestigious occasion, the decorated lawyer wore an archival John Galliano-era Christian Dior off-the-shoulder gown featuring a sumptuous train. She completed the sophisticated outfit with Cartier jewelry, including a pair of sparkling diamond drop earrings. While Clooney's gown appeared to abide by the festival's new dress code, the off-the-shoulder element of her outfit, and relatively low neckline, perhaps skirted the strict rules. Her John Galliano for Dior gown also featured an impressive train, which may have contravened Cannes Film Festival's new instructions. "Voluminous outfits, in particular those with a large train, that hinder the proper flow of traffic of guests and complicate seating in the theater are not permitted," the Cannes Film Festival FAQ reads. Following the screening, Clooney changed into a gold mini dress, which was adorned with flowers, sequins, and crystals for an after-party with Bono. Clooney previously attended Cannes Film Festival in 2016, where she supported husband George Clooney at the premiere of Money Monster. As usual, Amal outshone her famous husband by wearing a lemon yellow, one-shoulder chiffon gown from Atelier Versace.

Julia Roberts' beloved dog dies

Julia Roberts' beloved dog has died. The 'Pretty Woman' actress adopted Myrtle from a rescue centre as a pup in 2006 but she revealed on Friday (16.05.25) that the pooch, who she hailed a "legend", had passed away. Sharing a photo of her dog on Instagram, Julia, 57, wrote: "Our Myrtle. A Legend. 2006-2025 [crown emoji] (sic)" Jennifer Aniston was among those to send her condolences. She commented on the post: "I'm so so sorry [bandaged heart emoji] I love you all and always here [rainbow and paw print emojis] (sic)" Julia's husband Daniel Moder - with whom she has twins Hazel and Phinnaeus, 20, and Henry, 17, as well as another dog named Lou - also paid tribute to their canine companion. Sharing a picture of Myrtle on his own Instagram account, he wrote: "The definition of Fierce Loyalty, even if she bit the pizza man once. RIP Mytlle…aka Myrtle Von Mertzenberger.(sic)" Julia had been seen out and about with Myrtle a number of times over the year and the dog even appeared alongside the 'Notting Hill' actress for her Chopard Loves Cinema campaign in 2023. The 'Money Monster' actress recently admitted she feels "lucky" to have enjoyed years of career success before starting her family. She told Britain's Vogue magazine: 'Well, I think that the luckiest aspect of my work life/family life is that the success of my work life came earlier. 'So by the time I had the success of my family life and had a husband and children who wanted to stay home, I had been working for 18 years. 'And so I felt that I had the luxury. I didn't have to pick one or the other. You didn't have to make the choice. Of either/or. 'So it was easy to pause work life to nurture my home life. 'And so, because I have girlfriends who were having to juggle being at work and having to go into the bathroom, and you know, get out that breast pump, I sort of went through that with them by proxy. To be allowed the luxury of staying home and being with my family, I had a deep gratitude for that time.' Despite saying she loved staying at home when she was raising her kids, Julia stressed she thinks it's important her children saw her going back to work. She added when asked if family always comes before her career: 'Yes, of course. But then there's also something to my kids seeing that my creative life is meaningful to me. 'I want them to understand that. Going outside of the house and being creative is really important and vital. 'And it doesn't take away from my love of home. It's another level of my life.'

Nudity and 'voluminous outfits' banned from Cannes Film Festival

Since 1946, the Cannes Film Festival has been one of the most fashionable events on the industry's calendar, but 2025 may see a dramatic change to the star-studded red carpet. The site of some of the celebrity world's most daring ensembles in recent years, celebrities from across the globe are often snapped experimenting with everything from avant-garde looks to barefoot rebellions. This year, however, it seems that things may be a little more subdued as the official website of the festival has added some extra information to its FAQ section. For the Grand Théâtre Lumière gala screenings, they state that evening wear (long dress, tuxedo) is required. Other options include "a little black dress," a cocktail dress, a dark-colored pantsuit, a dressy top with black pants, elegant shoes and sandals with or without a heel (no sneakers), a black or navy-blue suit with bow-tie or dark-coloured tie. Additionally, they state that for "decency reasons", nudity is prohibited on the red carpet, as well as in any other area of the festival. Voluminous outfits, in particular, those with a large train, that "hinder the proper flow of traffic of guests and complicate seating in the theatre" will also not be permitted. According to the website, the festival's welcoming teams will be obligated to prohibit red carpet access to anyone who breaks these rules. However, with the new dress code being announced just one day out from the illustrious event, it will be interesting to see if celebrities and their stylists can adhere to the rules. Nudity and voluminous dresses aside, it is also interesting to note that "sandals without a heel" are specifically an option for the film festival, which previously came under fire for reportedly turning away a number of women from a red carpet screening of Carol in 2015 due to their flat shoes. At the time, Cannes' director Thierry Frémaux denied that the footwear was obligatory, saying: "The rumour saying the festival insists on high heels for women on the red carpet is unfounded". While Cannes' official dress code for the red carpet did not specifically mention the height of a woman's heel, it did insist on formal dress, which the festival's hosts and hostesses may have taken to mean 'high heel only'. Either way, it certainly got a reaction from Julia Roberts, who went barefoot in 2016 to the premiere of her film Money Monster. In 2019, Kristen Stewart followed in Julia's bare footsteps, ditching her shoes to tackle the famous Cannes staircase. Stay tuned to see if any red carpet rebellions take shape for 2025. The 78th edition of the Cannes Film Festival runs from Tue, May 13, 2025 – Sat, May 24, 2025.
