Biometric verification must for CM mass marriage scheme now
Bahraich: Couples who are planning to tie knot under CM mass marriage programme in UP will now have to get their biometric verification done before taking the wedding vows. The new norm, aimed at ensuring transparency, will be introduced from Oct this year. The social welfare department will now register the biometric presence of both bride and groom at the wedding venue, confirmed Monica Rani, district magistrate, Bahraich To prevent fraud and ensure that only eligible beneficiaries receive support, the Aadhaar verification will also be conducted on-site, allowing authorities to immediately identify if either the bride or groom has previously received benefits under this scheme. Under the scheme, Rs 1 lakh is spent per couple in the marriage. While Rs 60,000 is transferred directly to the bride's bank account, Rs 25,000 is allocated for wedding gifts and Rs 15,000 is given to cover expenses such as food, tents, and other arrangements. The scheme is aimed at supporting marriages of girls from economically weaker sections. Under new norms, the number of gift items provided to each couple has also been increased from 14 to 24. "It will now include essentials such as a mattress, cooking pans, five sarees, a wall clock, a water cooler, and several other household items," said an official. Previously, the verification process involved local officers physically visiting the beneficiaries' homes, after which the wedding dates were assigned. Railway authorities have specified that laying the railway line will require 40 feet wide land, while station construction will need 100 meters wide plots, which will also improve the area's overall infrastructure. However, some concerns have emerged among farmers about land acquisition, especially before harvesting. Several farmers are hesitant to sow crops, fearing acquisition may occur mid-season. There have been calls for railway authorities to ensure that farmers' interests are safeguarded during the process. To kickstart the project, the govt has allocated a budget of Rs 620 crore for constructing the initial 80-kilometer stretch from Bahraich to Shravasti to Balrampur. The railway has set a completion target of 2026 for the entire 240-km line covering Khalilabad, Mehdawal, Dumariyaganj, Utraula, Shravasti, Bhinga, and Bahraich.
