Feds bust boy, 13, for handing teen the gun used in fatal shooting of innocent girl in Bronx schoolyard: sources

A 13-year-old boy who supplied the gun that killed an innocent 16-year-old girl in a Bronx schoolyard was nabbed Monday and charged with second-degree murder, cops and law-enforcement sources said. The boy — who had been at large since the deadly May 12 shooting of Morris High School freshman Evette Jeffrey — was picked up by the US Marshals Regional Fugitive Task Force at a family friend's apartment building Monday morning in NYCHA's Forest Houses, the sources said. The kid, who is turning 14 in two months, was also charged with second-degree attempted murder, first-degree manslaughter, reckless endangerment and gun possession raps, police said. He had at least two previous arrests last year: one for menacing with a knife and the other for criminal possession of stolen property, sources said. The boy is the second teen busted in connection to the senseless murder. The alleged 14-year-old gunman, who appeared before a judge from a hospital bed late last week, was charged with second-degree murder, prosecutors said. He pleaded not guilty and was ordered held without bail. 'The defendant fired numerous shots on school grounds in the direction of approximately 20 school-age children,' Assistant District Attorney Timothy Collins said. 'The defendant struck an innocent bystander, a 16-year-old girl, in the head. The incident is on video. The defendant has been identified as the shooter.' The boy allegedly used a semi-automatic pistol during the early evening melee outside 800 Home St. in the Morrisania neighborhood. The building houses three schools: Dr. Richard Izquierdo Health and Science and Science Charter School, Bronx Latin and Bronx Career and College Preparatory High School. Investigators believe the mayhem was sparked by a feud between street gangs — the Forest Over Everything crew and an upstart gang calling itself Kreep On Davidson, based at the Davidson Houses public housing complex, NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said last week. 'The victim, Evette Jeffrey, was not involved in this dispute,' Kenny said. 'She was an innocent bystander who was simply trying to take cover behind the brick wall and was struck in the head by one of the rounds.' Relatives said Evette was celebrating her first anniversary with her boyfriend, also 16, at a Chinese restaurant after school and decided to stop at the playground — where she found herself in the line of fire. 'She's forever 16,' the girl's grandma has said. 'That's it.' Evette's grandmother couldn't bring herself to forgive the youngsters involved in the daylight violence that took her granddaughter's life. 'I don't forgive you,' she sobbed. 'I hold your family responsible because they should be watching you. Whoever handed you [the gun] or had it, I will never forgive you.'

See the moment a dust storm blanketed Chicago; "It's like something out of the history books"

A time-lapse video shows how quickly the Chicago skyline disappeared as the wall of dust blew through. "This looks like a bad thunderstorm coming through, but you can tell that it's just not a thunderstorm. It's dust. It's straight up dust," Thomas Jean-Mastej said. The National Weather Service said it was the result of 60 to 70 mph winds that blew over dry farmlands, collecting dust into the air, and blowing it through the Chicago area. The dust swept over Interstate 55, forcing some drivers to pull over and not take the chance, especially after dust storm alerts hit their phones. CBS Jean-Mastej pulled off and took out his phone to record the rare sight. "I was heading home, and the alert came up on my phone, and then my husband texted me, and then he called me. He's like, 'Get off the interstate right now. It's coming.' I was like, 'I can see it on the South Side,'" he said. The dust storm blew through a high school graduation ceremony in far southwest suburban Morris. A dust storm blows through Morris, Illinois, during a high school graduation ceremony on May 16, 2025 CBS When the dust storm hit, visibility in some spots quickly dropped to zero, and those standing outside could feel the debris blow in the wind. "You can feel it. You can feel the dirt in your eyes, and everything like that. You really have to have glasses on or something," Tom Nichin said. CBS Planes coming into Midway International Airport made their way through the dust storm as a ground stop halted incoming flights for about an hour, while Chicago area expressways were more backed up than usual because drivers found themselves driving right into the wall of dust. "It's like something out of the history books, you know? Unbelievable," Nichin said. CBS According to the National Weather Service, it was only the second time their Chicago office has issued a dust storm warning, and the first time such a warning included the city itself. Dust storm warnings are more common in the rural parts of central and southern Illinois. "You don't think that you would see this in the city," Jean-Mastej said. For most areas hit by the dust storm, skies cleared up within 30 to 45 minutes. CBS

Boy, 14, accused of fatally shooting innocent scooter-riding teen girl in NYC schoolyard ordered held in jail

The 14-year-old boy accused of fatally shooting an innocent 16-year-old girl as she rode her scooter into a Bronx schoolyard brawl this week was ordered held behind bars during his hospital-bed arraignment Thursday. The teen, facing a second-degree murder charge in connection to the death of Morris High School freshman Evette Jeffrey, was dressed in red pants and a black T-shirt and sat on a hospital bed as he appeared on a screen in the courtroom. The violent youngster – whose name was not officially released because he is a juvenile offender – pleaded not guilty to the Monday evening deadly shooting through his Legal Aid attorney Francis White, who sat by his side. 5 Evette Jeffrey, 16, was fatally shot when a 14-year-old gunman wildly opened fire during a Bronx schoolyard brawl Monday, cops said. Rebecca Abad/Facebook 'The defendant fired numerous shots on school grounds in the direction of approximately 20 school-age children,' Assistant District Attorney Timothy Collins said. 'The defendant struck an innocent bystander, a 16-year-old girl, in the head. The incident is on video. The defendant has been identified as the shooter.' Despite his tender age, the alleged gunman had already racked up a previous assault charge on his rap sheet, Collins said. Judge Gayle P. Roberts agreed to order the teen held without bail to ensure that he returns to court, 'given the very serious nature of the incident allegations, and as well as his family court findings.' 5 The teen was ordered held without bail in connection to the deadly violence. Facebook He also faces charges of attempted murder, manslaughter and three weapon possession-related offenses, according to the complaint. He is set to reappear in court on Friday. The boy allegedly used a semi-automatic pistol during the early evening melee outside 800 Home Street in Morrisania, which houses three schools — Dr. Richard Izquierdo Health and Science and Science Charter School, Bronx Latin and Bronx Career and College Preparatory High School. Investigators believe the daylight mayhem was sparked by a feud between street gangs – the Forest Over Everything crew and an upstart gang calling itself Kreep On Davidson, based at the Davidson Houses public housing complex, NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said earlier this week. 5 The daylight brawl was sparked by a feud between street gangs, according to NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny (pictured). 14-year-old taken into custody in fatal shooting of Bronx 16-year-old, NYPD sources say

Police sources say a 14-year-old person of interest is now in custody and being questioned in the shooting death of a 16-year-old girl in a Bronx school yard. Evette Jeffrey's future was cut short Monday when police say a fight broke out at a multi-campus school playground in the Morrisania section of the borough just after 5 p.m. Video obtained by CBS News shows the brawl. Investigators say Jeffrey, who went to nearby Morris High School, was riding her scooter in the school yard at Bronx Latin School on Union Avenue when gunshots rang out and one struck her in the head. Police sources say three shell casings were found in the school yard. "She was supposed to come back upstairs, and then I get a call. One of my neighbors knocked on the door. She was banging on the door, and we just ran. When I got there, she was on the stretcher. They were pumping her chest, and I told them I know she's gone," Jeffrey's grandmother said. "She said she was going home" A bouquet was left Tuesday for Jeffrey at the place where police say she was shot. Backpacks were seen strewn all over, where students left them behind as they tried to run to safety amid the gunfire. Jeffrey's friends said they were with her minutes before. "She said she was going home. I gave her a hug. We parted ways. That was the last time I seen her," one said. "I saw her. She waved at me. I waved back. She was a nice person, so sweet and what happened? She really didn't deserve that," another said. "I was with her. We went walking, walked her down the block over there. She said she was going home," another added. A bright girl who loved her pets and wanted to help others Jeffrey was her inconsolable mother's only child. Her grandmother said the teen was a sweet girl who loved her cats, dog and turtle, and dreamed of becoming a med tech. She shared a photo of Jeffrey graduating from middle school, adding she was full of life and just starting to think about her future. "She loved music. She had a banner over her bed, teddy bears, you name it, she was a girly girl," her grandmother said. "She wanted to be a med tech. She was already looking into schools that could start her now or wait until she graduates. She's a freshman." Friends say what happened to Jeffrey could have happened to any of them. "We was just talking about how we don't feel safe or nothing. This is crazy. It happened in broad daylight," one friend said. "I used to go down there a lot. I'm definitely gonna ignore that place now. I'm gonna go all around the block. I'm not gonna go near that place," another said. "I just hope she rest in peace," another added.
