Suspected Pakistani drone attack on Srinagar airport, countermeasures activated; 3 injured in Ferozepur

Suspected drone attack was reported on Srinagar airport on Friday amid the ongoing tensions between India and Pakistan. Officials said that countermeasures have been activated, reported PTI. The development comes a day after India thwarted attempts by the Pakistan military to attack Indian military installations. Pakistani drones were sighted in several areas including Jammu, Samba and Pathankot and Indian military was engaging them. Mosque loudspeakers were used in Srinagar to convey to locals to switch off their lights as a precautionary measure. As many parts of the Union Territory plunged into darkness, Blasts were heard and sirens sounded in Srinagar, Jammu region and south Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said in a post on X, "Intermittent sounds of blasts, probably heavy artillery, can now be heard from where I am." He also posted a picture of the city in darkness, captioning the post as, "Blackout in Jammu now. Sirens can be heard across the city." He said in another post, "It's my earnest appeal to everyone in and around Jammu please stay off the streets, stay at home or at the nearest place you can comfortably stay at for the next few hours. Ignore rumours, don't spread unsubstantiated or unverified stories and we will get through this together." Meanwhile, three people were injured in a Pakistani drone attack in Punjab's Ferozepur "We received information about three people being injured. They have burn injuries. Doctors will treat them. Most of the drones have been neutralised by the army," reported ANI quoting Ferozepur police officer Bhupinder Singh Sidhu. According to the army, on the intervening night of May 8 and 9, Pakistan launched between 300 and 400 Turkish drones across 36 locations from Leh to Sir Creek in its failed attempt to target Indian military installations on Thursday night and also accused that country of using its civilian planes as a 'shield' for its aerial attacks endangering the flights. "Indian forces neutralised many using kinetic and non-kinetic means… Pakistan escalated with artillery and drone attacks across the LoC (Line of Control), causing casualties. Alarmingly, Pakistan kept its civil airspace open during the assault, endangering civilian flights," the army said.

Australian Islamic College of Sydney: Graffiti attack targets Anthony Albanese in pre-election day attack

The Australian Islamic College of Sydney has been targeted in a graffiti attack just hours before Australians head to voting booths, with the words 'Hamas Albo' sprayed across a school fence. Exclusive 7NEWS vision, shared with The Nightly, showed the walls of the Mount Druitt school sprayed with three messages. 'Hamas Albo', 'Albo liab' and 'no migration', written in what appears to be black spray paint on the brick wall of the Islamic college in Western Sydney. The attack on the Islamic school occurred in the seat of Chiffley, held by Labor MP Ed Husic. The graffiti was on clear display as students entered the school on Friday. Independent Senator Fatima Payman said the attack was 'disgraceful'. 'It's disgusting. It's disgraceful. And it's becoming far too normal,' she told 7NEWS. 'My volunteers have been called terrorists, they've been harassed and verbally assaulted by volunteers and candidates. 'This is what happens when politicians use dog whistles and then pretend to be shocked when the racism shows up in plain sight.' Later on Friday morning, people were seen attempting to scrub the graffiti off the brick walls of the college which is attached to a Mosque. A NSW Police spokesperson told The Nightly: 'There have been no reports made to police regarding this incident.'

Found Ball Tampering And Security Issues Challenging: Just-Retired ICC Match Referee David Boon

Just-retired ICC match referee David Boon says ball tampering and security issues were the biggest challenges that he found "confronting" during his 14-year tenure in the position. Boon officiated in 87 Tests, 183 ODIs and 119 T20Is in the men's game and seven women's T20Is. The 64-year-old former Australia opener, who will join Cricket Australia (CA) as director to continue his long-standing association with the sport, looked back at the joys and challenges of officiating in international matches. "I think there are challenges that you have to meet everyday. You learn something everyday. I suppose there are certain things that are a bit more confronting, I found. "When I first started one of those (challenges) was ball tampering which I found very confronting... To basically accuse somebody of not doing the right thing," Boon said in a video shared by ICC on X. "And when there is a security and safety issue they were extremely challenging. One sadly here in Dhaka, Bangladesh and one in Christchurch, but you worked through it ... You take 10 deep breaths and off you go," Boon said, referring to Mosque attack in New Zealand in March 2019. Boon, whose involvement with competitive cricket began as a teenager in the 1978/79 season when he made his playing debut for Tasmania, ended his international career with 13,386 runs and 26 centuries across 12 years. Boon, who has served as national selector for 11 years from 2000 and oversaw a golden period for the men's team when it won two ICC World Cups and two Champions Trophy title, also shared his thoughts on the pace of the game and termed it a matter of concern. "I'm not sure about the over rates, whether we've got that right. Pace of play can be an issue," Boon said. "I'd hope from an administrative point of view we have a massive umbrella over cricket, and every nation looks at themselves as being under that umbrella form rather than their own little pieces of turf," Boon said. The just-concluded Test match between Zimbabwe and Bangladesh was Boon's last as match referee. "It is with mixed emotions that I finish my time as a match referee with the ICC. It has been an incredible honour and pleasure to be a part of this journey spanning nearly 14 years," Boon said. ICC chairperson Jay Shah paid tribute to Boon, who will now take up a position on Cricket Australia's Board. "On behalf of the International Cricket Council, I extend my gratitude to David Boon for his outstanding service as an ICC match referee," Shah said. "His professionalism and integrity have set a benchmark for match officials across the sport," Shah added.
