Kaizer Chiefs boss faces financial scandal

Kaizer Chiefs Football Club manager Bobby Motaung finds himself at the centre of a financial storm, with court papers filed to have his estate sequestered. According to a Sunday World report, Pent Up Investment CC has approached the Johannesburg High Court, claiming that Motaung owes the company more than R4.3 million linked to a property deal gone sour. Costas Couremetis, head of Pent Up Investment, alleges that Motaung has failed to settle the outstanding amount from a R9 million judgment issued back in November 2009. In a sworn affidavit, Couremetis detailed Motaung's failure to honour the full judgment amount. 'Pursuant to a failure by Lakeshore (Motaung was listed as the sole director of Lakeshore Trading) to make payment of the purchase price for the property in full, the applicant instituted proceedings… and obtained judgment on or about November 12, 2009 in a sum exceeding R9-million, plus interest and legal costs,' reads the court filing. The affidavit claims that as of January 2024, over R4.3 million remains unpaid. Despite not disputing the debt, Motaung allegedly made no significant effort to settle it. 'In fairness to the respondent, he has not sought to dispute the indebtedness… However, he has clearly not been able to pay the full sum… even after having been given various reasonable and generous indulgences over many years,' Couremetis added. What raised eyebrows, however, is the picture painted of Motaung's lavish lifestyle. 'The respondent has over all of these years lived a very opulent lifestyle, driving a Bentley… living in a large immovable property in… Houghton… wearing very expensive clothing and… watches… portraying the image of a very successful businessman… by virtue of the prominent position which he occupies at Kaizer Chiefs Football Club.' History of legal troubles This latest legal development adds to a string of past controversies. In 2016, a fraud and corruption case linked to the construction of Mbombela Stadium. Where Motaung was implicated, was dropped due to insufficient evidence. The same year, Sowetan Live reported that the South African Revenue Service (SARS) issued Motaung with a tax bill totalling R44.7 million. Then, in 2021, Sunday World revealed that SARS instructed liquidators to recover R90 million from a company. In which Bobby Motaung served as a director. While Motaung has remained tight-lipped in the face of these latest accusations. The unfolding legal battle could have lasting implications. Not only for his personal finances but also for his reputation at one of South Africa's biggest football clubs. Will Kaizer Chiefs' Bobby Motaung reputation still be intact? Thembisa NPO turns dumping sites into community spaces

The local environmental NPO Clean Environment has been on a mission to tackle illegal dumping across Thembisa since 2017, transforming more than 100 dumping sites into sustainable spaces like mini gardens, car washes and small parks. The Tsenelong Section NPO has built a reputation for reclaiming neglected areas, turning them into clean, functional community spaces. The NPO aims to remove waste and create environments that discourage future dumping. 'This started in our section,' said Tshepang Motaung, the co-founder of Clean Environment. ALSO READ: Illegal dumping now criminal offence in Ekurhuleni 'We noticed many tenants dumping plastic and rubbish in open spaces. What motivated us to keep going is that many communities supported us, and after we cleaned, they maintained the spaces. Not all areas do, but most of them.' The group, comprising five dedicated volunteers with the NPO since the beginning, also runs weekly educational campaigns in communities to raise awareness about the dangers of illegal dumping and promote a cleaner environment. One of the NPO's milestones was launching its recycling business, now in its second year. 'When cleaning, we noticed many recyclables. That's when the idea for a recycling business started,' Motaung said. The income supports their clean-up efforts, although financial challenges persist. 'We don't always have PPE or the tools we need, so we bring what we can from home to keep going.' While community members often respond positively during clean-ups, maintaining the cleaned spaces remains challenging. 'Some areas go back to being dumping grounds shortly after we clean,' Motaung explained. ALSO READ: Illegal dumping on Modderfontein Road remains an eyesore The NPO tries to involve local ward councillors in their campaigns, but often ends up working alone. However, the CoE's Thembisa Waste Office was a consistent supporter, helping with rubbish collection, tractor loader backhoes and tipper trucks for rubble removal. One of their most impactful recent projects was cleaning a bridge that had become a health hazard and an obstacle for pedestrians. 'The waste blocked the bridge, so crossing it was unsafe. We couldn't just walk past, so we organised a clean-up,' said Motaung. The team restored the bridge with support from the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (WESSA), the Dipalesa Foundation and two community members. Looking ahead, Clean Environment plans to launch a campaign called #KeGame in partnership with the WESSA. This initiative will combine clean-ups with educational awareness drives in Thembisa, running weekly or biweekly. An upcoming focus area will be Winnie Mandela Zone 4. 'We randomly select some of the worst dumping sites and clean them to benefit the community. We're committed to keeping Thembisa clean, one spot at a time,' Motaung said. Next Stay Close ✕ Chiefs will visit Sekhukhune in their penultimate league fixture, needing all three points to keep their Top 8 hopes alive. Amakhosi currently sit ninth on the table with 30 points, level with eighth-placed Chippa United, who have played one game more. 'We know the importance of Saturday's game. We have put the celebrations aside. We are reshuffling our focus to the league,' Dove told the club's media team. 'We have been preparing well, and the mood has been right. The energy has been positive. Hopefully, we can go into this game with a clear idea of what needs to be done. 'The coaches have been doing their best to keep the gents in check during our training sessions and making sure that we have all the tools for Saturday.' Chiefs must secure a Top 8 finish, not only to qualify for next season's MTN8 and redeem last season's shortcomings, but potentially to safeguard coach Nasreddine Nabi's job. Despite winning the Nedbank Cup, reports suggest Nabi may be released at the end of the season due to inconsistency in league performance. 'It has been a bit of a difficult season, so that's our main goal now — to make sure we finish in the Top 8,' Dove added. 'We are working hard to make sure we achieve that. It won't be easy, as there are no easy games, but we are ready to fight for it.' Sekhukhune will be formidable opponents, as they also desperately need points to secure third place and qualify for the CAF Confederation Cup. Babina Noko currently occupy the spot, one point ahead of Stellenbosch, who host SuperSport United at Danie Craven Stadium in a simultaneous kick-off. We're buzzing with pride! A huge congrats to the Betway Premiership Coach for April - our very own Eric Tinkler. Let's continue to rally behind our mentor and his charges. 🦔🦔🦔#Adibahlabe #BetwayPremierLeague — Sekhukhune United F.C. (@SekhukhuneFc) May 14, 2025 Sekhukhune have been in impressive form under coach Eric Tinkler, who has rejuvenated the side since taking over. Tinkler and striker Keletso Makgalwa were recognised in the DStv Premiership monthly awards for April, winning Coach and Player of the Month respectively. Chiefs' attacker Makabi Lilepo won the Goal of the Month award. 'There are no easy games in this league. We know the threat they can pose, but the most important thing is to focus on ourselves and fix any wrongs,' said Dove on facing Sekhukhune. 'We have to make sure that we are ready on Saturday to go toe-to-toe with Sekhukhune. We need the points, and I am 100% sure the gents understand what's at stake.'
