Tastefully Yours – K-drama Episode 9 Recap & Review

Imperfect Cooking Episode 9 of Tastefully Yours begins with Yeon-joo heartbroken over Beom-woo's betrayal. Elsewhere, Chairman Han and the rest of Hansang celebrate Motto's three Diamant stars. A TV producer named Kim approaches Chairman Han, proposing a documentary. But she refuses. At Jungjae, Myung-sook and Chun-seung arrive at work as usual but soon realise something is wrong with Yeon-joo's mood. She tells them it will just be the three of them now but doesn't explain further. However, when her concentration wavers throughout the day, she finally tells them the truth about Beom-woo. Meanwhile, Beom-woo, who is pretty upset himself, goes to Motto. He packs up his things and apologises to Yu-jin and Young-hye, who are pretty confused at his behaviour. He then hands in his resignation. Chairman Han sees the message and then tells Sun-woo that he will be taking over Motto now. His own restaurant, La Lecel, will be shut down. Elsewhere, the Frenchman who had visited Jungjae along with his daughter and her fiancé's family in the early episodes is revealed to be working for Diamant. He calls the company and asks them to add one more restaurant with three stars in Korea. Yeon-joo closes the restaurant and goes to the Buddhist monastery. She sees her mother, the head monk, and breaks down in her arms. Afterwards, when a small child at the monastery throws a fit, Yeon-joo cooks a makeshift cake for her out of the available ingredients. The little girl loves it! Later that night, Yeon-joo tells her mother what happened with Beom-woo. Her mother listens and then points out that Yeon-joo's cooking has changed. She now prioritises the person eating rather than herself. She asks Yeon-joo to consider why that might be. The Diamant list is publicly released and everyone is surprised to see that Jungjae has been added as a special addition, receiving three stars! Chairman Han grabs at the opportunity and calls Producer Kim with an idea for a cook-off between the two restaurants. She then sends her employees to go get Beom-woo, which is how he finds out the restaurant won three stars. However, he isn't interested in the cook-off or being a part of Hansang in general. But it's not that easy. Hansang has bought the building that houses Jungjae and Chairman Han threatens to wipe it out completely. She also threatens Yeon-joo's career. Myung-sook and Chun-seung head to Jungjae to look for Yeon-joo and find a crowd of people waiting outside. This is how they learn that their restaurant won three Diamant stars. Back at the monastery, Yeon-joo finds out the same from some guests. She also hears about the cook-off. Beom-woo comes back to town and sees Myung-sook and Chun-seung, who are now working at a different restaurant. They give him a piece of their mind. He breaks the news about the fate of Jungjae and the cook-off off but they think he's conning them again. At the monastery, Yeon-joo goes to the kitchen and starts cooking. But she has a vision of her younger self who makes her realise she really wants to cook at Jungjae. That night, the head monk tells Yeon-joo that Beom-woo had visited the temple. A flashback shows Beom-woo seeing Yeon-joo at the temple but not approaching her. The head monk finds him and he talks about how he regrets being a bad person earlier. At present, the head monk encourages Yeon-joo to go back. In the morning, Beom-woo waits at Jungjae. He is pleasantly surprised to see Myung-sook and Chun-seung arrive to help protect the restaurant. They've called in the grocer and the butcher as reinforcements as well. Soon, at Jungjae and Motto, cameras and banners are set up and the staff get ready for the cook off. Despite no sign of Yeon-joo, Beom-woo encourages Team Jungjae for the competition. The Episode Review Episode 9 is a solid, engaging episode. As the heartbreak episode, there is a lot of crying and general sadness but it does not feel overboard. In fact, Go Min-si and Kim Shin-rok both do a great job in bringing out the tears, you can't help but feel for their sense of loss and betrayal. Kang Ha-neul's muted performance allows Beom-woo's regret and pain to shine through as well. As the final scene of the episode rolls around though, Chun-seung and Myung-sook warm back up to Beom-woo a little too quickly. The Diamant stars twist is what adds more action and energy to the episode. A fairly predictable move but truth be told, I did not expect it to be the French father from Episode 5. It's a nice touch! What is more unexpected is Chairman Han's reaction. A cook-off is not what I thought she would jump to but seeing as the next episode is the finale, it only makes sense for Jungjae to finally prove itself in front of Hansang. After the lovely visuals of the cake Yeon-joo made in this episode, here's hoping the finale gives us plenty more shots of delicacies to drool over. TV & Film Picks: Tastefully Yours, SEC Environmental Film Festival, The Assessment

Tastefully Yours Netflix Do not attempt to watch this South Korean romantic comedy on an empty stomach. The culinary creations featured hav e propelled the 10-episode series to the top spot on Netflix's list of Top 10 TV programmes in Singapore. Apart from fine-dining dishes and traditional Korean fare, Tastefully Yours coasts on the sizzling chemistry between its lead actors. Actor Kang Ha-neul plays spoilt restaurateur Beom-woo, while actress Go Min-si is gifted chef Yeon-joo. Beom-woo is on a quest to find that signature dish that will give his posh restaurant Motto a three-star rating from the Diamant Guide, the show's take on a Michelin Guide. He chances upon Yeon-joo's tin y d iner, and is impressed by her farm-to-table cuisine. He offers to acquire her place, but despite being deep in debt, she is not selling. It is a no-brainer that the bickering pair will fall in love. Tastefully Yours is filled with familiar K-drama tropes, but the simple narrative and visually appealing food – such as traditional Korean beef dishes neobiani and seopsanjeok – make the show more appetising. SEC Environmental Film Festival In celebration of World Environment Day on June 5, the Singapore Environment Council (SEC) has partnere d t he Singapore Film Society to host a three-day festival. It will f eature three films that address global environmental challenges. French stop-motion animation Savages (2024) by Oscar-nominated director Claude Barras will open the festiv al. Set in a tropical forest in Borneo, the movie revolves around two childre n and a rescued baby orangut an, and how they cope with deforestation. French stop-motion animation Savages is the opening film for SEC Environmental Film Festival. PHOTO: BEAST ANIMATION A Crack In The Mountain (2022) is an award-winning documentary about the struggles to preserve Vietnam's Hang Son Doong, the largest cave in the world. It is located in the Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, a Unesco World Heritage site. The film seeks to address how a natural wonder can be exploited for tourism dollars and the challenges of environmental conservation. The festival will close with Future Council (2024), a documentary that follows eight Australian children on a school excursion across Europe to seek solutions to the climate crisis. Together with director Damon Gameau, their mission is to better understand the planet's predicament and explore solutions with some of the world's largest polluters and influential companies. Proceeds from the SEC Environmental Film Festival will go to the council's outreach programmes in schools. As the SEC is a registered charit y, m ovie ticket sales are eligible for tax rebates. The official assessor Virginia (Alicia Vikander) puts the couple through seven days of psychological torment by role-playing a wilful toddler. For instance, she pees on a dinner guest and flings food at 'mummy' Mia in temper tantrums. What she is doing is testing Mia's and Aaryan's underlying insecurities to break them emotionally. Not since she was an android seducing a hapless programmer (Domhnall Gleeson) in the 2014 British sci-fi flick Ex Machina has Vikander been this manipulative and sinister. Here is another extraordinary performance by the Swedish actress. Olsen and Patel are also very good, reacting with a mix of discombobulation and distress as the black comedy in their unnerving three-hander turns to horror. – Whang Yeeling Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you.

Tastefully Yours first impression: Weirdly addictive duo Go Min Si, Kang Ha Neul cook up quirky kitchen romance in Netflix's new-age Business Proposal

Safe to say, Go Min Si and Kang Ha Neul are Netflix's new Shin Ha Ri and Kang Tae Moo—just flip the personalities. Tastefully Yours dropped on May 13 with a nonexistent Rotten Tomatoes score, and it's tough watching a Squid Game star's much-hyped show pull in below-average ratings at home. But let's not forget the new K-drama pattern: tanking locally, trending globally, Tastefully Yours seems to be riding that same wave. Early Netflix buzz hints it's gaining traction, but we will have to wait until the next Tudum top 10 non-English TV list is released. For now, Weak Hero, Resident Playbook and Heavenly Ever After are dominating the genre for consecutive weeks. Tastefully Yours episode one and two premiered by introducing us to Han Beom Woo (Kang Ha Neul), a money-hungry chaebol battling his brother Han Sun Woo (Bae Na Ra) in the classic K-drama family feud, both gunning for the CEO seat of their mega food empire, currently run by their mother who's ready to retire. The brothers are handed two rival restaurants—Motto and La Lecel—and the deal is simple: whoever bags the first 3-star critic rating gets the reins of Hansang, the multi-million-dollar corporation. The show kicks off with Kang Ha Neul channelling Park Seo Joon from Secretary Kim and Ahn Hyo Seop from Business Proposal energy with that signature CEO swoop hairstyle. But just as quickly, his character flips with goofy antics, threatening local vendors, and bossing chefs around in the most chaotic way. Also read: Spring of Youth first impression: A K-drama that badly needs Netflixification to rescue its fresh faces, old-school charm, and Byeon Woo Seok vibe Thankfully, the creators don't paint Beom Woo as a jerk without reason—he's got a motive. He wants the chair, and as both creative and management lead, he's pulling every trick in the book to take Motto to the top. But big bro plays it smart, hits him with the Uno reverse, and now Beom Woo is broke and stuck with Mo Yeon Joo's (Go Min Si) restaurant, the very one he planned to steal a recipe from to get those 3 stars. That stolen recipe is now his only shot at survival. The fast pace and zero drag in storytelling will likely keep you hooked. Go Min Si's character carries her own brand of quiet quirk. She barely talks, but her eyes light up when she's cooking. She runs a tiny, hidden restaurant tucked away in a quiet alley, barely makes enough to cover bills, but she's stubborn when it comes to food quality. She grows her own veggies in a small garden, trades rare homegrown spices with local vendors like it's an underground drug deal, and cooks a dish for Beom that ends up humbling him, reminding him of his grandma's Kimchi. Their oddball interactions, snappy dialogues, beautiful platings, contrasting personalities and a cliffhanger have convinced me to return for episode 3. Also read: Heavenly Ever After first impression: Skip Son Suk Ku's K-drama if you are not ready for the most unconventional romance yet This is Go Min Si's first real step into romance, and while the chemistry with Kang Ha Neul might not sizzle, her character's firm ideals carry weight. By episode 2, we see the duo seal the business deal, with Han Beom Woo pulling out creative tricks to draw in customers. They hire new staff, Jin Myeong Sook (Kim Shin Rok), and Yoo Su Bin's cameo as Shin Chun Seung in episode 2 brings in the much-needed laughs. We love when K-dramas sneak in cheeky nods to other shows or K-pop—and this time, it's Byeon Woo Seok's Lovely Runner getting the shout-out. Jin Myeong says she's obsessed with a drama featuring a Lovely Jogger. Episode 2 ends on a mini cliffhanger with Yeon Joo eavesdropping on Beom's call, where he talks about stealing her recipe. Director Han Jun Hee and writer Jung Soo Yoon's new show opened to an underwhelming 1.6% domestic rating, according to KBI Zoom, far lower than the finale numbers of its predecessor, New Recruit 3. The criticism came in fast, some criticised Go Min Si's accent that she nailed back in Jinny's Kitchen, while others called out her offbeat chemistry with Kang Ha Neul, saying it just doesn't click, at least not yet. But the show has every element that could easily make it a hit. Blame the promotion, or the lack of it, Netflix, surprisingly, was not on top with its promotional campaign, unlike its usual K-content hype machine. Tastefully Yours has the whole package, face cards, solid acting chops, soft-lit aesthetics, chaebol sibling rivalry, kitchen chaos, and just enough romance — the recipe K-romcom fans have been eating up for years. You might still find yourself in a love-hate thing with the leads, but if you're into the genre, chances are you'll binge it anyway. Netflix synopsis: 'Driven to claim top culinary honours, an arrogant heir meets a low-profile but stubborn chef whose recipes astonish him, sparking an unlikely romance.'

Two Food Lovers Meet In Search Of A Recipe In ‘Tastefully Yours'

The characters played by Kang Ha-neul and Go Min-si have very different takes on fine dining. Viewers of the k-drama Tastefully Yours may not initially like the character Han Beom-woo. He's kind of obnoxious. He's inconsiderate and pretentious, all qualities he comes by naturally. It's the way he was raised. His family runs a food empire and they are so competitive, he's encouraged to compete with his own brother. Beom-soo, played by Kang Ha-neul, works for the family business, but his real obsession is with his restaurant Motto. His brother (Bae Na-ra) also has a restaurant and whichever brother first earns three gold stars for his own restaurant will be chosen to run the family corporation. Both brothers are working hard to make that happen. But Beom-woo can't do it alone. Complicating his efforts is Motto's celebrity chef, Jang Young-hye, played by Hong Hwa-yeon (Buried Hearts, True to Love, Mental Coach Jegal). Young-hye is not as invested in the restaurant's ranking as Beom-woo so she's more casual about deadlines, which concerns him. There's a dish he wants to put on the menu that he's waiting for her to make. When someone posts a photo of a similar looking dish online, he goes all the way to Jeonju to see the dish for himself. Beom-woo is about to get the recipe for transforming his life. Go Min-si's character runs a restaurant in Jeonju that Kang Ha-neul's character wants to buy. The photo-posting restaurant turns out to be pretty obscure. It's not just hard to find, it seems to be a failure, at least in terms of making enough money to pay the rent. The homey restaurant is run by Mo Yeon-joo, played by Go Min-si (Sweet Home, Love Alarm and Youth of May) . Yeon-joo loves to cook for the sake of cooking, rather than for any restaurant ranking. After tasting her farm-to-table fare, Beom-soo is impressed. He offers to acquire her restaurant for his family's company, but Yeon-joo is not selling. Still, there is something about the flavor of her food that appeals to Beom-woo's senses. While these characters have different takes on fine dining, he's quick to recognize that she's a gifted chef. His plan for Motto's success may not work without the right chef to help create gold star worthy recipes. Yeon-joo may be just the right chef. Kang Ha-neul also appears in three films this year, Yadang: The Snitch, Streaming and Wall to Wall. The actor starred in the dramas Squid Game 2, Curtain Call, The Kidnapping Day and When The Camellia Blooms. Tastefully Yours is directed by Park Dan-hee, who directed Weak Hero Class 1. The drama airs on Netflix.
