Trump to Kennedy Center board members: ‘We're going to do some good things, but the basics are there'

President Trump on Monday delivered remarks to members of the Kennedy Center board of trustees, which Trump drastically overhauled earlier this year as he sought to put his stamp on the performing arts institution. Trump held the meeting in the State Dining Room at the White House on the same day the Kennedy Center announced its theater season for 2025-2026. The performing arts center, which has faced backlash over some of its changes under Trump, announced musicals such as 'Chicago,' 'Monty Python's Spamalot,' and 'Moulin Rouge!' would have runs at the center. 'We're going to do some good things, but the basics are there,' Trump told the board on Monday. 'The location is phenomenal. The importance of the building is phenomenal. And we'll have some very interesting plans.' 'I always thought they should have built a beautiful performing center, open air, facing out over the Potomac,' Trump continued. 'They didn't do that. They built these crazy rooms underneath; they built three tiny little stages, very expensive. Someday, maybe somebody will occupy one.' 'We're going to turn it around,' Trump added. 'That's what I love doing. I love turning things around. Turnaround artist. We're doing that with the country.' Trump announced in February that he would boot multiple members of the Kennedy Center's board and serve as its chair. He accused the prominent arts hub of being too 'woke' and appointed Richard Grenell, his envoy for special missions, as its interim executive director. The president went on to appoint a slew of political allies as board members, including chief of staff Susie Wiles, Attorney General Pam Bondi, Fox News hosts Laura Ingraham and Maria Bartiromo and senior White House official Sergio Gor. Bondi, Wiles and Secretary of State Marco Rubio were among those at Monday night's meeting. Trump on Monday bemoaned that the Kennedy Center's previous programming was 'out of control,' arguing it showcased performances with 'rampant political propaganda.' 'Instead of putting forward programming that tears our country down and tears our country apart, the Kennedy Center should be the nation's premier venue for lifting up the best of our country and lifting up the American arts, theater, music and culture,' Trump said. Kennedy Center To Include Non-Equity Theater Productions Following Donald Trump Complaints

Two non-Equity national theatrical tours – Mrs. Doubtfire and Chicago – are on the 2026 schedule of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., marking a major shift in Kennedy Center policy that comes just two months after President Donald Trump complained about union costs. A Kennedy Center spokesperson said in a statement to Deadline, 'In order for the Kennedy Center to be more competitive in the industry, we are expanding our programming to include both equity and non-equity shows in our theaters and look forward to providing world-class shows to our patrons, regardless of their equity status.' The restrictive and expensive nature of union-only shows isn't good for a diverse community. We want more options, not fewer.' Deadline has reached out to Actors' Equity Association and will update this post with a response. The Mrs. Doubtfire and Chicago tours are listed on Equity's roster of productions that are 'Non-Equity/No Union Contract For Equity Members.' When Trump, who has named himself the Kennedy Center chairman, visited the arts institution in March he openly complained about, among other things, IATSE union rules and costs, telling reporters, 'Lee Greenwood wanted to sing a little song today, and because of the cost in the union structure for him to sing a song just for the board, just the board meeting, it was going to cost $30,000. They wanted $30,000 just to move a piano. So you can't have that.' Equity prohibits its members from performing in or stage managing productions without an Equity contract. 'That's rule number one on the back of your Equity card,' Equity's website states. Non-Equity productions reduce costs by hiring non-union performers and crew who do not have the same protections and benefits offered by the union. The Kennedy Center's 2026 theater line-up announced today also includes Monty Python's Spamalot, Moulin Rouge!, Bluey Returns, Back To The Future and The Outsiders, all Equity productions. The Center's website does not indicate whether a production is union or non-union. Following months of layoffs and show cancelations, last week Kennedy Center administration staffers announced an organizing drive to form their own union to be called Kennedy Center United Arts Workers. In a statement, the staffers said, 'As the United Arts Workers of the Kennedy Center, our work is built on relationship and trust. Our artists, educators, students, donors, and patrons trust that we have their best interests at heart. And as staff, we trust that the institution will value and support us in exchange for being the workers who carry out its mission with joy and success. 'But on February 12, 2025, the Kennedy Center's board was stripped of its bipartisan structure. Our reputation as arts professionals was questioned and we were threatened with censorship. Instantly, that trust was broken. We no longer believe our institution trusts us and we no longer trust our institution.' Today's news of the Center's 2026 theatrical line-up was first reported by right-wing website The Daily Caller. Baz Luhrmann reduces price of NYC townhouse to $13.99M

Film director Baz Luhrmann is once again testing the Manhattan luxury market, relisting his Gramercy Park townhouse for $13.99 million — a steep discount from its original $19.99 million asking price in March 2022, The Post has learned. The five-story, 8,500-square-foot residence has cycled on and off the market over the past three years, weathering a series of price cuts. Most recently, it was listed at $14.99 million in September 2024, following previous reductions to $18.9 million in June 2022, $17.99 million in September 2023 and $15.99 million in May 2024. Matteo Prandoni/ Luhrmann purchased the Anglo-Italianate property in 2017, at 243 E. 17th St., for $13.5 million and spent several years renovating it with his signature theatrical flair. He listed it in 2022 after finding himself less in New York and more in his native Australia — not to mention traveling through other parts of the world. Advertisement Built in the 1850s, the home sits on a rare 28-foot-wide lot facing Stuyvesant Square Park and features a stately cast-iron balcony, round-arched windows and a paneled cornice. Known for films like 'Romeo + Juliet,' 'The Great Gatsby' and 'Moulin Rouge!,' Luhrmann's stylized taste is reflected in the home's moody interiors. 10 The entryway. The brokerages did not respond to The Post's requests for comment by press time. A gated entrance opens to a landscaped front garden and leads into an entry vestibule. A prior listing highlighted the home's architectural distinction: 'It is the only Anglo-Italianate house in the district that was not originally part of a row of narrow, uniform houses.' Luhrmann and his wife, production and costume designer Catherine Martin, have lived in the home with their two children. The couple, longtime creative collaborators, married in 1997 and have worked together on many of his most celebrated films, including the 2022 Elvis Presley biopic 'Elvis.'

Tom Cruise Recalls Recommending Nicole Kidman For ‘Eyes Wide Shut' Role: 'A Great Actress'

Nearly 25 years after their divorce, Tom Cruise still appears to be a fan of Nicole Kidman. The 4x Oscar nominee recalled making the 1999 Stanley Kubrick-helmed erotic thriller with his then-wife, explaining that he 'suggested Nicole play the role' of his character Dr. Bill Harford's wife Alice. Tom Cruise Praises Nicole Kidman, Pays Tribute To Val Kilmer, Lauds Movie Greats Jack Nicholson And Marlon Brando 'I flew out to [Kubrick's] house, and I landed in his backyard,' he told Sight and Sound. 'I read the script the day before and we spent the day talking about it. I knew all of his films. Then it was basically he and I getting to know each other. And when we were doing that, I suggested Nicole play the role [of Alice]. Because, obviously, she's a great actress.' Cruise told the writer/director 'Whatever it's going to take [to make the movie], we're going to do this.' Co-written by Kubrick and Frederic Raphael, Eyes Wide Shut stars Cruise as a wealthy doctor feeling restless in his marriage. When he discovers an elite underground sex club, Dr. Harford quickly realizes he's in over his head. 'I thought the film was very interesting, and I wanted to have that experience,' said Cruise. 'When I go to make a movie, I do a lot of detailed investigation and a lot of time with the people before I commit so that I understand what they need and want and they understand me and how we can work together and really create something very special.' Kidman previously recalled the initial meeting with Kubrick, for which she was also in attendance, as well as their rehearsals for a scene where the couple has an intimate talk while sharing a joint. 'I suppose he was mining [our marriage],' she said of Kubrick. 'There were ideas he was interested in. He'd ask a lot of questions. But he had a strong sense of the story he was telling. I do remember him saying, 'Triangles are hard. You have to tread carefully when it's a triangle.' Because one person could feel ganged up on. But he was aware of that and knew how to manage us.' Kidman added, 'But there's something about being a woman in that equation, too. And Stanley liked women. He had a different relationship with Tom. They worked more closely together on his character.' Kubrick died of a heart attack at age 70 on March 7, 1999, just days after screening a final cut of Eyes Wide Shut for his family and the stars of the film.
