Leguizamo's Esposito seeks redemption by catching an arsonist in 'Smoke'

Photo courtesy of Apple TV+ NEW YORK, Aug. 16 (UPI) -- Romeo + Juliet, Moulin Rouge! and Ice Age Icon John Leguizamo says the disgraced detective he plays in Smoke is seeking redemption by trying to bring down the former partner who cost him his career. Created by best-selling novelist Dennis Lehane, the show follows a law-enforcement task force, including Leguizamo's Esposito, who are determined to catch Dave (Taron Egerton), an arson investigator and prolific fire-setter. "He got too close to the truth. He knew who the arsonist was and that's when they destroyed his career, made him the fall guy, and he hit rock bottom," Leguizamo, 65, told UPI about his character in a recent Zoom interview. "He drinks a lot and takes a lot of pills and he becomes a porn director," the actor said. "But then he gets a chance to get back on the [police] force because he knows the truth. But he has to keep constantly proving himself and I think that's the exciting part of being in that character. I have to fluctuate. I have to fight with all these different forces against me and no one will believe me." John Leguizamo knows how to make an entrance.#Smoke - Now Streaming Apple TV (@AppleTV) July 18, 2025 Esposito finds an unlikely ally in ATF Agent Hudson, played by Veep and My Girl alum Anna Chlumsky, 44. "She tries to help me get back the reins," Leguizamo laughed. "Poor woman. She's exhausted because of me." To prepare for the role, Chlumsky looked at what a woman in her position would have had to accomplish to get to where she is in a predominantly male field. "There's this sense of having to prove yourself over and over, even if you've gotten to the point where you're leading a task force," she said. "That never goes away. It's part of your conditioning. It's part of your workplace code switch and that's really where I was jumping in from. I was jumping in from how trusted she felt at work, how much she trusts herself and, ultimately, not wanting to let any of those insecurities get into her ability to do the job well." Leguizamo pointed out that this is a theme for many of the characters in Smoke. "Jurnee [Smollett] has to try to prove herself," he said, to which Chlumsky replied, "Also, to whom are you proving something, right?" Leguizamo said he was happy to provide the comic relief in a show that digs into some really serious topics, including crime, corruption, mental illness, suicide and violence against women. "What I love about this series is that it has teeth," Leguizamo said. "It's not easy. It's not just light-hearted," he added. "I love that it's really dark, complex characters, people with a lot of demons and, then, we get a chance, Anna and I, to bring a little humor and a little repartee that lightens it up a little bit, but they are still messed-up characters. We're still broken human beings and I love playing those kind of characters that are really vulnerable and, yet, they fight for the truth." Chlumsky emphasized that the show is first and foremost intended to be entertaining. "Even when he's going to the darkest questions and exploring the shame of his characters or the parts of this characters that they don't even want to look at, you can tell that [Lehane] is remaining playful," Chlumsky said. "He's having a great time and that's, I think, what energizes the whole thing." The series wrapped up on Apple TV+ Friday. Greg Kinnear and Rafe Spall co-star.

Trump to Kennedy Center board members: ‘We're going to do some good things, but the basics are there'

President Trump on Monday delivered remarks to members of the Kennedy Center board of trustees, which Trump drastically overhauled earlier this year as he sought to put his stamp on the performing arts institution. Trump held the meeting in the State Dining Room at the White House on the same day the Kennedy Center announced its theater season for 2025-2026. The performing arts center, which has faced backlash over some of its changes under Trump, announced musicals such as 'Chicago,' 'Monty Python's Spamalot,' and 'Moulin Rouge!' would have runs at the center. 'We're going to do some good things, but the basics are there,' Trump told the board on Monday. 'The location is phenomenal. The importance of the building is phenomenal. And we'll have some very interesting plans.' 'I always thought they should have built a beautiful performing center, open air, facing out over the Potomac,' Trump continued. 'They didn't do that. They built these crazy rooms underneath; they built three tiny little stages, very expensive. Someday, maybe somebody will occupy one.' 'We're going to turn it around,' Trump added. 'That's what I love doing. I love turning things around. Turnaround artist. We're doing that with the country.' Trump announced in February that he would boot multiple members of the Kennedy Center's board and serve as its chair. He accused the prominent arts hub of being too 'woke' and appointed Richard Grenell, his envoy for special missions, as its interim executive director. The president went on to appoint a slew of political allies as board members, including chief of staff Susie Wiles, Attorney General Pam Bondi, Fox News hosts Laura Ingraham and Maria Bartiromo and senior White House official Sergio Gor. Bondi, Wiles and Secretary of State Marco Rubio were among those at Monday night's meeting. Trump on Monday bemoaned that the Kennedy Center's previous programming was 'out of control,' arguing it showcased performances with 'rampant political propaganda.' 'Instead of putting forward programming that tears our country down and tears our country apart, the Kennedy Center should be the nation's premier venue for lifting up the best of our country and lifting up the American arts, theater, music and culture,' Trump said. Kennedy Center To Include Non-Equity Theater Productions Following Donald Trump Complaints

Two non-Equity national theatrical tours – Mrs. Doubtfire and Chicago – are on the 2026 schedule of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., marking a major shift in Kennedy Center policy that comes just two months after President Donald Trump complained about union costs. A Kennedy Center spokesperson said in a statement to Deadline, 'In order for the Kennedy Center to be more competitive in the industry, we are expanding our programming to include both equity and non-equity shows in our theaters and look forward to providing world-class shows to our patrons, regardless of their equity status.' More from Deadline Donald Trump Calls Disney Abu Dhabi Resort "Incredible" After Meeting With Bob Iger Donald Trump Says He Plans To Call For Investigation Of Kamala Harris' Endorsements From Bruce Springsteen, Beyoncé And Other Celebrities John Oliver Delivers The "Hot Take" WBD Was Expecting On HBO Max's Rebrand, Comparing It To Gulf Name Change: "F-- You, Don't Tell Me What To Do" Richard Grenell, the Kennedy Center president installed by Trump earlier this year, said in a separate statement, 'The Kennedy Center is the premiere institution for the arts in America, so we don't want to limit the shows available to our audiences. The restrictive and expensive nature of union-only shows isn't good for a diverse community. We want more options, not fewer.' Deadline has reached out to Actors' Equity Association and will update this post with a response. The Mrs. Doubtfire and Chicago tours are listed on Equity's roster of productions that are 'Non-Equity/No Union Contract For Equity Members.' When Trump, who has named himself the Kennedy Center chairman, visited the arts institution in March he openly complained about, among other things, IATSE union rules and costs, telling reporters, 'Lee Greenwood wanted to sing a little song today, and because of the cost in the union structure for him to sing a song just for the board, just the board meeting, it was going to cost $30,000. They wanted $30,000 just to move a piano. So you can't have that.' Equity prohibits its members from performing in or stage managing productions without an Equity contract. 'That's rule number one on the back of your Equity card,' Equity's website states. Non-Equity productions reduce costs by hiring non-union performers and crew who do not have the same protections and benefits offered by the union. The Kennedy Center's 2026 theater line-up announced today also includes Monty Python's Spamalot, Moulin Rouge!, Bluey Returns, Back To The Future and The Outsiders, all Equity productions. The Center's website does not indicate whether a production is union or non-union. Following months of layoffs and show cancelations, last week Kennedy Center administration staffers announced an organizing drive to form their own union to be called Kennedy Center United Arts Workers. In a statement, the staffers said, 'As the United Arts Workers of the Kennedy Center, our work is built on relationship and trust. Our artists, educators, students, donors, and patrons trust that we have their best interests at heart. And as staff, we trust that the institution will value and support us in exchange for being the workers who carry out its mission with joy and success. 'But on February 12, 2025, the Kennedy Center's board was stripped of its bipartisan structure. Our reputation as arts professionals was questioned and we were threatened with censorship. Instantly, that trust was broken. We no longer believe our institution trusts us and we no longer trust our institution.' Today's news of the Center's 2026 theatrical line-up was first reported by right-wing website The Daily Caller.
