Kennedy Center To Include Non-Equity Theater Productions Following Donald Trump Complaints
A Kennedy Center spokesperson said in a statement to Deadline, 'In order for the Kennedy Center to be more competitive in the industry, we are expanding our programming to include both equity and non-equity shows in our theaters and look forward to providing world-class shows to our patrons, regardless of their equity status.'

Richard Grenell, the Kennedy Center president installed by Trump earlier this year, said in a separate statement, 'The Kennedy Center is the premiere institution for the arts in America, so we don't want to limit the shows available to our audiences. The restrictive and expensive nature of union-only shows isn't good for a diverse community. We want more options, not fewer.'
Deadline has reached out to Actors' Equity Association and will update this post with a response. The Mrs. Doubtfire and Chicago tours are listed on Equity's roster of productions that are 'Non-Equity/No Union Contract For Equity Members.'
When Trump, who has named himself the Kennedy Center chairman, visited the arts institution in March he openly complained about, among other things, IATSE union rules and costs, telling reporters, 'Lee Greenwood wanted to sing a little song today, and because of the cost in the union structure for him to sing a song just for the board, just the board meeting, it was going to cost $30,000. They wanted $30,000 just to move a piano. So you can't have that.'
Equity prohibits its members from performing in or stage managing productions without an Equity contract. 'That's rule number one on the back of your Equity card,' Equity's website states. Non-Equity productions reduce costs by hiring non-union performers and crew who do not have the same protections and benefits offered by the union.
The Kennedy Center's 2026 theater line-up announced today also includes Monty Python's Spamalot, Moulin Rouge!, Bluey Returns, Back To The Future and The Outsiders, all Equity productions. The Center's website does not indicate whether a production is union or non-union.
Following months of layoffs and show cancelations, last week Kennedy Center administration staffers announced an organizing drive to form their own union to be called Kennedy Center United Arts Workers. In a statement, the staffers said, 'As the United Arts Workers of the Kennedy Center, our work is built on relationship and trust. Our artists, educators, students, donors, and patrons trust that we have their best interests at heart. And as staff, we trust that the institution will value and support us in exchange for being the workers who carry out its mission with joy and success.
'But on February 12, 2025, the Kennedy Center's board was stripped of its bipartisan structure. Our reputation as arts professionals was questioned and we were threatened with censorship. Instantly, that trust was broken. We no longer believe our institution trusts us and we no longer trust our institution.'
Today's news of the Center's 2026 theatrical line-up was first reported by right-wing website The Daily Caller.

James Comey praises Taylor Swift, unloads on Donald Trump in vlog
James Comey is sure to get under Donald Trump's skin once again — this time for extolling the virtues of Taylor Swift. The former FBI director, who was fired during the polarizing president's first term, has revealed himself to be a superfan of the pop superstar his political foe 'hates' the most. A new video posted to the Substack platform on Sunday shows Comey referring to Swift as 'a truly inspirational public figure' and noting her recent stream-crashing appearance on Jason and Travis Kelce's podcast 'New Heights.' 'Taylor Swift and I go way back,' the 64-year-old grandfather shared in the clip. 'I went to my first concert of hers 15 years ago. I've been to a second, and I have helped financially support the attendance of a lot of family members and others.' He continued: 'I'm in a family Swiftie group chat. I know all her music, and I listen to it in my headphones when I cut the grass.' Comey also shared that the 10-minute version of Swift's 'All Too Well' is among his favorites, which also include 'Exile' featuring Bon Iver. He said the 14-time Grammy Award winner has produced 'great art' that has been the soundtrack of his family's life. He then went on to talk about standing up to bullies and mentioned Gavin Newsom's back and forth with the 79-year-old MAGA leader. 'I've got to be honest, it also leaves me with a strange feeling at times because I don't want us to become like Trump and his followers,' Comey said about the California Governor's recent mockery of the former 'Apprentice' star's social media habits. He added: 'There are far more decent, honest, kind people in America than there are mean jerks, and don't get me wrong, we have our jerks, millions of them. You may have noticed! In particular, there's a stunning coarseness and ugliness in the Republican Party today. It's upsetting, but it's also a minority of America. On the whole, we aren't like that and we don't like that.' Comey wasn't finished tearing into Trump, who has taken credit for what he believes to be the demise of the 35-year-old's popularity since expressing his hatred for her on social media. 'While our elderly, makeup-covered president is posting about whether Taylor Swift is still 'hot' and declaring that he can't stand her, what's she doing? Living her best life, producing great music, and, as she urged all of us to do during the podcast, not giving the jerks power over her mind.' _____

'After a period of separation, the two of us have arrived at the decision to part ways,' the couple said at the time. 'We came to this decision amicably and with gratitude for the time we spent together. God has blessed us with two beautiful daughters who we will continue to raise together. We kindly ask for privacy and respect as we navigate this transition. Thank you.' In his conversation with Rory and Mal this week, Chance said the clip marked an example of him 'putting our business out there.' While he made sure to point out that he was celebrating his 30th birthday at the time and that the level of 'lit' observed in the footage is par for the course at Carnival, Chance also said he was 'glad when that s**twas over,' as everyone from family members to press outlets were 'blowing up' his phone. 'Everybody was lit,' he said. 'That was probably the cleanest whine I caught. Y'all are lucky they censored the other whines I was catching. But the truth is, like I said, don't have anybody looking stupid. I went out there for fun. I think, at the end of the day, I do wish that that s**tdidn't happen that way and I wish that I was protective of her. But I think it's, you know, it's in the past. That's the reality.' The tour name appears to be a nod to Chance's Ye-featuring song 'All We Got,' from his 2016 tape, Coloring Book. Star Line follows Chance's first studio album, The Big Day, which arrived on July 26, 2019. Prior to that, he released Coloring Book in 2016, Acid Rap in 2013, and 10 Day in 2012. Stream the album on Spotify and Apple Music here. In a new conversation with New Rory & Mal, Chance commented on his relationship with Ye, telling the co-hosts that they haven't spoken 'in a long time,' but explained that he still has 'reverence' for the Donda rapper. 'My first album that I consciously wanted to have was The College Dropout. So I have a different reverence for him, or just understanding of how my life went and how it influenced things I do," Chance added. 'I think most rappers got a rapper that was they first album, and probably from they city. So imagine if yours was Kanye West, and imagine if you worked with them, and imagine all that shit.' In 2016, Chance appeared on Ye's album, The Life of Pablo, earning writing credits on a several songs and featuring on the project's opening track, 'Ultralight Beam.'
