Breaking: Xavier hires Richard Pitino from New Mexico

There will be a father and son in the Big East, and they're both named Pitino! Richard Pitino, the son of St. John's head coach and Hall of Famer Rick Pitino, is leaving New Mexico to take the same position at Xavier, sources confirmed to Fox Sports on Wednesday night. After the 42-year-old took New Mexico to back-to-back NCAA Tournaments, beating Marquette this year in the first round and going 88-49 over the last four seasons, Pitino increased his stock significantly and was in the mix for both the Villanova and Xavier athletic director Greg Christopher was enamored by the upside of Pitino, who tried the high-major route at Minnesota but was let go in 2021 after eight seasons on the job. Going to Albuquerque led Pitino to an attempt to get his career reignited, and he did just that, leading the Lobos to an 88-49 record over the last four seasons, winning the Mountain West Tournament in 2024 and charging the program to a regular-season title this a 27-7 record leading into the NCAA Tournament, Pitino charged the Lobos past Big East team Marquette in the first round of the NCAA Tournament before falling short to Michigan reaction: this only adds to the family atmosphere and tradition of the Big East. The fact that we will see at least two and perhaps three showdowns between Rick and Richard Pitino is phenomenal for the league and its storylines. Father has outdone son in their four meetings with a 3-1 record to Rick, with the two splitting the last two weekends and St. John's beating the Lobos this past November. But Richard was well in position for a high-major job in this cycle and after Villanova did not extend an offer to him despite being very much in the mix, with Kevin Willard and a mystery candidate in the mix with the Wildcats, Christopher extended the offer to Pitino and now he's heading to the state of Ohio to take over a Xavier program that has been a staple to the NCAA Tournament throughout the majority of the last two decades. Colorado State University students react to Niko Medved leaving program hours after nearly making Sweet 16, "It hurts"

Students and staff at Colorado State University who were already navigating a devastating loss in the NCAA Tournament Sunday night were dealt a second blow Monday morning, as Head Coach Niko Medved announced he is leaving the men's basketball program. Medved, who has served as head coach of the team for seven seasons, announced he took a job at the University of Minnesota. "I woke up and I was dumbfounded," said Mike Walsh, a CSU senior and fan of the basketball team. "I didn't think it was going to happen, especially this fast. We lost yesterday to a buzzer beater. It would have been to the Sweet 16." Under Medved, the CSU Rams have been the most successful men's basketball program in Colorado for several years now, making three of the last four NCAA men's basketball tournaments. The team has also been ranked several times in recent seasons. This year the Rams came one point shy of making the Sweet 16 after winning the Mountain West Tournament. "It is such a hard thing to fathom because he has been so successful at CSU," Walsh said. Medved's departure to Minnesota had been predicted by some for years now. He grew up just 15 minutes away from the university and attended the university for his studies. Minnesota, which is part of the BIG10, is considered a larger program with a bigger budget when it comes to recruiting and NIL spending. "He did a lot for the program. So, a lot of students including myself are bummed about that," said Payton Barill, a sophomore at CSU. Barill has followed the team closely for two years now, watching several players succeed to the level of being NBA draft prospects and selections. "I don't think it was a huge shock. He has done a ton for the program and his success has been recognized across the board," Barill said. Walsh said the Rams' success in recent years clearly drew more attention to Fort Collins and likely contributed to Medved becoming a strong candidate for bigger programs. "It hurts because Niko is such a good head coach," Walsh said. "Three out of the last four NCAA tournaments, we were on such an upward slope. This feels like it sets us back just a little bit." CSU announced they have promoted an assistant coach to manage interim head coach duties while they complete a national search for the next head coach of the Rams. Barill said she is still a fan and optimistic that the next full time head coach can try and keep the team's success on track. However, she did worry that Medved's departure will also be met with some players leaving as well. "I think it will definitely impact the program," Barill said. "They have had the most success this season that they have had in a long time. I think losing him as coach will mean the roster gets broken up a bit, not to mention we are losing a few key seniors." Both Barill and Walsh said they fully recognize why Medved took the job, especially with his ties to Minnesota. However, they said that doesn't mean they aren't also disappointed with the challenge it leaves for the Rams. "(CSU fans have) got to be happy for Niko, even though they are upset he is leaving the Rams high and dry," Walsh said.

2025 March Madness: Star guards rise to the occasion as the heroes from Day 2

Every college basketball coach preaches the importance of guard-play in the NCAA Tournament. And each March, fans seek the next "Kemba candidate", a title named fittingly after former UConn guard Kemba Walker, who carried the Huskies to national championship in 2011. Year after year, stand-out guards change the ceiling of their team in the Big Dance, and that was the theme on the second day of the tournament: Kyan Evans, Guard, Colorado State As Colorado State surged to a Mountain West Tournament title and an automatic bid in the NCAA Tournament, it was guard Nique Clifford, who captured the headlines with his scintillating shot-making. But when Clifford went cold on Friday, in the Rams first round matchup with Memphis, sophomore Kyan Evans stepped up. The smallest man on the court had the biggest night of anyone. Evans made a career-high six 3-point shots and scored a career-high 23 points. He also had four assists and didn't turn the ball over once. Despite shooting 3-of-13, Clifford still impacted the game, with six assists and eight rebounds, while Evans took the weight off his shoulders in the scoring column. Colorado State has won 11 straight, dating back to Feb. 15, and became the second 12 seed to complete an upset. The Rams now bring all that momentum into a matchup with fourth-seeded Maryland on Sunday. Baylor's freshman duo The Bears have had an up-and-down season because, well, that's life when you're led by sporadic freshman. But then there are performances like Friday that remind you just how dynamic top NBA prospects can be. Baylor's pair of projected first-round picks, V.J. Edgecombe and Robert Wright Jr., combined for 35 points to lead the Bears to a 75-72 win over Mississippi State on Friday. Edgecombe hit two timely 3-pointers in the second half, his shooting touch opening the lane for Wright to attack the Bulldogs with slashing drives. Sean Pedulla, Guard, Virginia Tech Pedulla is the sun that Ole Miss's offense revolves around. When he has a big game, the Rebels tend to come out on top. On Friday, he scored 20 points and dished five assists in the Rebels 71-64 win over North Carolina. The performance was impressive as it came against a Tar Heels team that has a pair of tough perimeter defenders in Seth Trimble and Elliot Cadeau. OIe Miss led by double-digits for the first 30 minutes of Friday's game, but then North Carolina stormed back and cut it to 66-64. With 52 seconds remaining, Pedulla hit a 3-pointer from the right-wing, which was the dagger. Donovan Dent, Guard, New Mexico The Mountain West Player of the Year represented his conference well on Friday, as he led New Mexico to a 75-66 win over Marquette. He scored 20 points and dished out six assists, while shooting a perfect 6-of-6 from the free-throw line. Dent is one of the top guards in the country and is capable of leading the Lobos on a deep run. Jackson Shelstad, Guard, Oregon Shelstad was in such a zone that he started shaking his head after hitting a mid-range jumper, in disbelief of his own unconsciousness. He had eight of Oregon's first 16 points, knockingdown a deep pull-up 3-pointer to give the Ducks a 16-2 lead and ended the game with 17 points. Oregon imposed its will from the jump, and never looked back, dominating Liberty 81-52, on Friday. Shelstad, a West Linn, Oregon native, wears No. 3 because of his idol and mentor Payton Pritchard, who had a number of memorable runs in the green and yellow. Shelstad channeling Pritchard would mean good things will continue to come for these Ducks. Will Riley, Forward, Illinois In Big Ten country, they call Will Riley a "thirty-in-a-hurry" type of scorer. That's because he'll go from having an off night, to a break-out night. And that's exactly what he did on Friday. Riley started the game 0-of-3 and scored just four points in the first half, before erupting for 18 second-half points as he helped Illinois to an 86-73 win over Xavier. Riley, a freshman from Ontario, started just seven games for the Illini, but is comfortable in a microwave role off the bench. His scoring punch could spark a March Madness run for Illinois.
