2025 March Madness: Star guards rise to the occasion as the heroes from Day 2
Year after year, stand-out guards change the ceiling of their team in the Big Dance, and that was the theme on the second day of the tournament: Kyan Evans, Guard, Colorado State
As Colorado State surged to a Mountain West Tournament title and an automatic bid in the NCAA Tournament, it was guard Nique Clifford, who captured the headlines with his scintillating shot-making. But when Clifford went cold on Friday, in the Rams first round matchup with Memphis, sophomore Kyan Evans stepped up.
The smallest man on the court had the biggest night of anyone. Evans made a career-high six 3-point shots and scored a career-high 23 points. He also had four assists and didn't turn the ball over once. Despite shooting 3-of-13, Clifford still impacted the game, with six assists and eight rebounds, while Evans took the weight off his shoulders in the scoring column. Colorado State has won 11 straight, dating back to Feb. 15, and became the second 12 seed to complete an upset. The Rams now bring all that momentum into a matchup with fourth-seeded Maryland on Sunday. Baylor's freshman duo
The Bears have had an up-and-down season because, well, that's life when you're led by sporadic freshman. But then there are performances like Friday that remind you just how dynamic top NBA prospects can be. Baylor's pair of projected first-round picks, V.J. Edgecombe and Robert Wright Jr., combined for 35 points to lead the Bears to a 75-72 win over Mississippi State on Friday. Edgecombe hit two timely 3-pointers in the second half, his shooting touch opening the lane for Wright to attack the Bulldogs with slashing drives. Sean Pedulla, Guard, Virginia Tech
Pedulla is the sun that Ole Miss's offense revolves around. When he has a big game, the Rebels tend to come out on top. On Friday, he scored 20 points and dished five assists in the Rebels 71-64 win over North Carolina. The performance was impressive as it came against a Tar Heels team that has a pair of tough perimeter defenders in Seth Trimble and Elliot Cadeau. OIe Miss led by double-digits for the first 30 minutes of Friday's game, but then North Carolina stormed back and cut it to 66-64. With 52 seconds remaining, Pedulla hit a 3-pointer from the right-wing, which was the dagger. Donovan Dent, Guard, New Mexico
The Mountain West Player of the Year represented his conference well on Friday, as he led New Mexico to a 75-66 win over Marquette. He scored 20 points and dished out six assists, while shooting a perfect 6-of-6 from the free-throw line. Dent is one of the top guards in the country and is capable of leading the Lobos on a deep run. Jackson Shelstad, Guard, Oregon
Shelstad was in such a zone that he started shaking his head after hitting a mid-range jumper, in disbelief of his own unconsciousness. He had eight of Oregon's first 16 points, knockingdown a deep pull-up 3-pointer to give the Ducks a 16-2 lead and ended the game with 17 points. Oregon imposed its will from the jump, and never looked back, dominating Liberty 81-52, on Friday. Shelstad, a West Linn, Oregon native, wears No. 3 because of his idol and mentor Payton Pritchard, who had a number of memorable runs in the green and yellow. Shelstad channeling Pritchard would mean good things will continue to come for these Ducks. Will Riley, Forward, Illinois
In Big Ten country, they call Will Riley a "thirty-in-a-hurry" type of scorer. That's because he'll go from having an off night, to a break-out night. And that's exactly what he did on Friday. Riley started the game 0-of-3 and scored just four points in the first half, before erupting for 18 second-half points as he helped Illinois to an 86-73 win over Xavier. Riley, a freshman from Ontario, started just seven games for the Illini, but is comfortable in a microwave role off the bench. His scoring punch could spark a March Madness run for Illinois.

Rams sign OL Mike McAllister
The Rams signed offensive lineman Mike McAllister to a one-year deal, the team announced Tuesday. The Rams also announced they waived wide receiver Mario Williams with an injury designation and placed outside linebacker Keir Thomas II on injured reserve. McAllister returns to the Rams after spending time on their offseason and practice squad rosters in 2023 and 2024. He entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent in 2023. McAllister has never played in a regular-season game. He played five seasons at Youngstown State, appearing in 30 games for the Penguins with all 17 starts coming at center.

Jerry Jones admits he wouldn't have been able to make big trade like Rams did for Stafford
The Los Angeles Rams trade for quarterback Matthew Stafford in 2021 was one of the biggest moves in franchise history. L.A. sent former first-round pick Jared Goff, two first-round picks and a third-rounder to the Detroit Lions for Stafford. Months later, they hoisted the Lombardi Trophy at SoFi Stadium. The move was bold at the time, and Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones applauded Rams president Kevin Demoff back in 2023 for pulling it off. In a clip of the new Netflix show, "America's Team: The Gambler and His Cowboys," Jones joked with Demoff during the Cowboys training camp in 2023 that he didn't have "the balls" to pull off that type of blockbuster move. "I don't have the balls to put it all out there the way ya'll did on that quarterback [Matthew Stafford]," Jones said. "I won't do that." The move ended up working out for L.A., though, as it culminated in a Super Bowl victory and has kept the Rams relevant for three of the four years since the trade occurred. The Rams didn't have a lot of draft capital in the meantime, but worked around that by taking high-impact players later like Kyren Williams, Puka Nacua, Byron Young and Kobie Turner. The Cowboys have been good in recent years, but haven't advanced to the NFC championship game since 1995.

Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford able to practice again
Matthew Stafford's second day of practice lacked the anticipation and drama of the first. But Tuesday's performance was a milestone nonetheless for the star quarterback and a Rams team with designs on a Super Bowl title. The biggest takeaway: Stafford's injured back responded positively to Monday's one-hour workout, enabling the 17th-year pro to play with even more confidence as the Rams prepare for their Sept. 7 opener against the Houston Texans. 'The reality is we're trying to get our hands on this and get him to feel as good as possible,' coach Sean McVay said. 'Backs can be a volatile thing. This is definitely positive progress. … It certainly is trending in a positive direction for us.' Stafford, 37, had been sidelined since the start of training camp because of what McVay has described as an aggravated disc. McVay has said that Stafford received an epidural injection a few weeks ago, but on Tuesday he declined to specify if he had received another. Stafford was not made available to reporters. Rams players welcomed the return of a quarterback who ranks among the NFL's otp 10 in several career passing categories. 'Any time that man walks into a huddle, he just brings presence,' veteran right tackle Rob Havenstein said Tuesday. 'So it's great to see him out there doing his thing.' Stafford has plenty of experience. But 'repetition is the mother of learning,' McVay said, so Stafford's ability to read coverages, feel the pass rush and escape a collapsing pocket at full speed in practice helps him continue to develop. 'I don't care whether you're Matthew Stafford, whether you're Steph Curry — whoever you are,' McVay said. 'These guys get great at their sports by being able to play it.' So McVay is eager for Stafford to take as many reps as possible before the opener. 'I'll be just like, I think, a lot of fans and a lot of his teammates and coaches,' McVay said, 'that you're really hopeful that this is the direction … so we can build a good foundation and allow him to be the Matthew that we're accustomed to seeing.' Left tackle Alaric Jackson, who is dealing with blood clot issues, continues to do individual work with trainers. 'His focus and concentration is being ready to go for Week 1,' McVay said, 'and that would be a great situation for us if that's the case.' … Receiver Davante Adams had a veterans day off from practice.
