Lys Mousset's spell at Bohemians is over as the Gypsies cut 'The Moose' loose
Bohemians have parted company with former Premier League striker Lys Mousset after a short stay. Mousset was a £10 million player in England's top flight when Sheffield United bought him from Bournemouth in 2019. But the Frenchman lost his way after his spell with the Blades, with various fitness issues setting him back in his career. The 29-year-old's arrival at Bohemians in February caused a stir and fans quickly embraced the quirky nature of the signing, dubbing the striker 'The Moose'. But Mousset continued to struggle for fitness at Bohs and made just nine appearances for Alan Reynold's men, starting three times. He only scored one goal, but it was a valuable strike as it secured a 1-0 win for Bohemians away to Sligo Rovers in May. The writing was on the wall for Mousset this week when Bohemians signed former Drogheda United loanee striker Douglas James-Taylor from Walsall. In a statement, the Gypsies said: 'Bohemian FC can today confirm the departure of Lys Mousset by mutual consent. We thank Lys for his efforts at the club over the past six months and wish him all the very best for the future.' Ex-Premier League striker Lys Mousset departs Bohemians
Bohemians have confirmed that striker Lys Mousset has departed the club "by mutual consent". The former Bournemouth and Sheffield United striker joined the club earlier this year following a successful trial, but with only one goal to his name, the 28-year-old has headed for the exit door. Mousset starred for both the Cherries and the Blades in the Premier League and made 90 English top-tier appearances after initially making his breakthrough in France with Le Havre. The former France under-21 international has flattered to deceive since leaving the Premier League in 2022 and spent a year out of football prior to his stint at Bohs, where he struggled for form in front of goal. A Bohs statement read: "Bohemian FC can today confirm the departure of Lys Mousset by mutual consent. "We thank Lys for his efforts at the club over the past six months and wish him all the very best for the future." Alan Reynold's second-placed Bohs have brought in former Drogheda United loanee, Douglas James-Taylor, from Walsall, while they are also pondering a bid for the services of Galway United midfielder Patrick Hickey.

Bohs boss gives Lys Mousset update after ex-Premier League star nets first goal
Lys Mousset is closing in on a first start for Bohemians since late February, but manager Alan Reynolds is not going to rush the former Premier League striker. Mousset delighted Bohs fans when he netted his first goal for the club in last weekend's 1-0 win away to Sligo Rovers. He joined the club late in the close-season, after almost 18 months without first-team football, so he had plenty of catching up to do fitness-wise. A couple of knocks have set back his progress, but he is working hard on the training pitch, according to Reynolds who, when asked if he is ready to start, replied: 'Possibly.' Reynolds continued: 'Look, we'll see. He still has plenty of work to do. 'It's taken a while, but you can see with the celebration for the goal, the players are behind him and the staff, it's been tough because he's picked up an injury and he has to be fitter. 'I think for now he might be a bit-part off the bench, but hopefully he can progress.' Mousset has done plenty of work away from the rest of the squad in his bid for fitness. 'We've had him in, then he picks up a niggle, then we have him separate to the group to try and get him up to speed, then he picks up an Achilles problem, then there are loads of games, Friday-Monday,' said Reynolds. 'You'd nearly have to have one personal trainer with him, but we don't have the staff for that. 'He's working away at it, but he needs to get trimmer. He has the quality, we've seen that in training. 'You know the people that talk about Premier League quality; you can see the glimpses of it. That's what frustrates you, this fellow could be anything. But there is a reason he didn't have a club for a while. 'When you see him in training and the type of stuff he does, it's excellent.' Mousset's 89th minute winner at the Showgrounds was the Gypsies' sixth late goal in their last five wins. They scored in injury time against Galway United, twice against St Patrick's Athletic, and against Shamrock Rovers. And their winner against Cork City came at the relatively early time of 85 minutes. With four wins in their last five games, they have shot up the table and are just two points off the lead. And Reynolds' position, which was far from secure earlier in the season when fans were baying for blood, looks a lot safer these days. 'Look, I always felt that some performances last year were good, we just didn't get the bounce of the ball or the break,' he said. 'Then we brought in other players and it just took time to settle down. 'Playing for Bohs isn't easy, especially in Dalymount, the pressure on myself and so on. So that can hinder… Sean Grehan comes over from Crystal Palace and in his first game or two he's looking and going, what's this… the tension and the pressure and all the rest of it. 'Obviously he finds his way through it and he has been exceptional. 'It's not easy when results aren't going well, it's not an easy place for lads to play. But again, if you can get your results, then it's probably the best place in the country to play.' As for the secret to all their late goals, Reynolds said: 'One thing for sure is we're fit. If you score one or two, you'd be going, it's a bit of luck. But we are really, really fit.' The Bohs manager's decision to bring his players back to train in early December appears to have paid off. 'Well, you are thinking in March, what was the point in bringing them back, with the results,' he said. 'But we needed that, I felt, because last year I felt we weren't fit enough. 'At the start of the season you are second-guessing yourself, but I think they see the rewards now. And the players bought into it.'

‘He needs to get trimmer' – Reynolds insists Lys Mousset has work to do but Bohemians fan favourite ‘could be anything'
ALAN REYNOLDS insists Lys Mousset has more work to do to push into his Bohemians starting line-up — as he declared the secret to the team's late shows is fitness. And boss Reynolds believes there is more to come from the 29-year-old if he can regain the fitness that made him a Rennie said: 'He's working away at it but he needs to get trimmer. But Reynolds hailed his squad overall for their fitness levels, which have seen them claim victories in five of their last six games, with no winning goal coming earlier than the 85th minute. Advertisement Three of those involved comebacks and injury-time winners but Reynolds stressed the sequence is not down to luck. He said: 'One thing for sure is we're fit. If you score one or two, you'd be going, 'It's a bit of luck'. But we are really, really fit. 'We have a small squad at the minute with a couple of lads out injured and that, so everyone is within touching distance of playing and they are all ready. 'I would put it down to persistence and we are really fit, but I'd also say I think it's hiding the fact of how well we are playing in some games as well. 'But we are actually playing well in games and all the focus is on the comebacks at the end of them.' FITTING THE BILL The current run is reaping the rewards of a longer than normal pre-season designed to boost fitness levels, but Reynolds acknowledged his side's early form in this campaign is a reminder of how quickly things can change. He said: 'You were thinking in March, what was the point in bringing them back early, with the results. Advertisement 'Last year I felt we weren't fit enough. At the start of the season you are second-guessing yourself, but I think they see the rewards now. And the players bought into it. 'But it's never too far away from the other side. You need to keep chipping away and working as hard as you can.'
