Four people killed in R38 road crash; bakkie occupants missing
Authorities said a sedan crashed with a bakkie, and the sedan was swung across the road where it further collided with a truck. Image: Supplied Four people lost their lives on Tuesday evening when a light delivery vehicle and a sedan collided head-on, on the R38 Road between Kaapmuide and Louws Creek in Mpumalanga. The sedan, after colliding with the bakkie, was swung across the road and subsequently collided with a truck. The Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison said four victims died at the scene and they include the driver of the sedan, and three passengers. 'The occupants of the bakkie were reportedly not found at the scene,' said Moeti Mmusi, spokesperson for the Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison. 'The cause of the crash is not clear at the moment but reckless and negligent driving cannot be ruled out at this stage. The investigation into the crash is already underway.' Image: Supplied Meanwhile, Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Jackie Macie has called on motorists to drive with caution, especially in the dark, when visibility is reduced. "While the government at all levels is putting programmes in place to make roads safer, it is the responsibility of every driver to obey the rules and use the road cautiously. Most of the crashes can be avoided if those who drive are highly alert at all times," Macie said. The MEC is sending condolences to the bereaved families.

One killed in R40 accident near Barberton Game Reserve
A driver died in an accident on the R40 near the Barberton Game Reserve on Monday, May accident involved a Volkswagen Polo and a stationary truck. The driver of the Polo died while being treated on the scene by Emer-G-Med paramedics. Martin Jeffrey of Emer-G-Med said they received a call about the accident at around 16:20. Upon their arrival, they found both drivers still entrapped in the wreckage. 'They were severely injured and we removed them while treating them. Before we could transport him to the hospital a driver died. We were able to treat the truck driver before we transported him to Nelspruit Mediclinic for further medical treatment,' he said. The Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security, and Liaison's spokesperson, Moeti Mmusi, confirmed that the cause of the accident is unknown, pending investigation. He added a call on motorists to always drive with caution and obey the rules of the road. 18 dead on Mpumalanga roads over Easter weekend
Mpumalanga Easter weekend turned into a nightmare for families across the province as the road deaths claimed 18 lives. Most of the crashes happened along the N4 between Emalahleni and Komatipoort, which is a corridor known for accidents during the travel season. 'People are speeding and not listening,' said Moeti Mmusi, spokesperson for the Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety. According to SABC News, it was reckless driving, high speeds, and dangerous overtaking that led to the crashes. Law enforcement officers are now under pressure to step up when the next peak season comes. The Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety confirmed that several taxis and private vehicles were involved. This revelation has raised concerns over public transport safety during peak seasons. Unfortunately, in many of these accidents, multiple members of the same family died in the same crash. Paramedics say victims were either pronounced dead on the scene or died on their way to the hospital. Local communities are mourning. It is alleged that some accuse the authorities of failing to be strict and arresting repeat traffic offenders. Easter road fatalities and accidents on the decline, says Creecy
The N1 has not recorded a single fatal crash. Transport Minister Barbara Creecy says road deaths and accidents are on the decline as motorists return home after the Easter long weekend. Creecy, accompanied by her deputy Mkhuleko Hlengwa, held a media briefing along the N1 in Limpopo on Monday to provide an update on road safety operations conducted during the Easter period. Creery reveals zero fatal crashes on N1 during Easter weekend The minister said during the press conference that although traffic volumes peaked at 2 047 vehicles per hour on Thursday afternoon and Friday morning, the N1 has not recorded a single fatal crash despite being one of the busiest routes in the country. 'This is a rare occurrence on this route, and it speaks of the effectiveness of our law enforcement and deployment plan in improving road safety outcomes,' Creecy said. The suspect is expected to appear in court next week. Watch the briefing below: Easter road statistics under review – Creecy Creecy indicated that the complete Easter road statistics are not yet available as they are still undergoing quality assurance and verification. 'Early indications are that our road safety campaign is holding strong, and the public has responded positively to our messages. 'I don't want to issue statistics at this stage. I would prefer to issue them once the Easter weekend is concluded because I don't want to jinx the very good record that we have had so far.' 'As you know there was one very serious accident on Thursday evening and there have been other fatal accidents in that province.' According to the Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison, 18 people lost their lives in multiple road crashes between 17 and 19 April. In contrast, Limpopo has recorded the lowest number of crashes and fatalities so far. Thousands of vehicles stopped and fined Over the Easter weekend, 70 000 vehicles were stopped by law enforcement officers. This resulted in 21 000 traffic fines and 512 arrests for various offences including drunk driving, excessive speeding, and operating without proper permits. 'We take those violations very, very seriously and there were other people where there were outstanding warrants of arrest that were also arrested,' Creecy said. The highest number of drunk drivers was recorded in the Eastern Cape, where an additional 111 motorists were arrested. 'Last weekend, I spoke about somebody we arrested in Port St. John's who was nine times over the legal limit. I don't know whether it's a competition, but we've now arrested somebody who was 10 times over the legal limit.' Total fines, arrests Since 20 March, authorities have stopped over 782 000 vehicles and issued 116 000 traffic fines. More than 3 500 drivers were arrested for a range of offences, while 89 pedestrians have been arrested for walking on highways. 'We will not allow people to walk on highways. It endangers their own lives and of course when you are driving at high speed if you collide with a pedestrian it's going to endanger the lives of everybody in that vehicle.' Additionally, 2 200 unroadworthy vehicles were taken off the roads, and 2 500 more were impounded for violating the National Land Transport Act. I want to call on everyone who is behind a wheel, everyone who is a pedestrian, everyone who is a passenger in a vehicle. 'Put your seat belts on. Reduce speed. Drive defensively. Be aware of other drivers around you on the roads. Take extra care so that if they make a mistake, you will prevent an accident from happening,' she said. The minister also appealed to parents and guardians to prioritise the safety of children on the roads. 'We want to reduce the number of children that are injured in road traffic accidents,' Creecy added.

No fatal accidents reported in eMalahleni over the weekend The Easter weekend's road carnage is tallying up. The Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison reported the province has recorded about 18 deaths in crashes between 17 and 19 April. On April 18 three people, including a toddler died in an accident on the R35 between Bethal and Middelburg. Three other people sustained serious injuries while two occupants were slightly injured. This fatal crash involved a multipurpose vehicle and an articulated truck. Two people also lost their lives when the mini-bus taxi that they were travelling overturned after its driver lost control on the N4 toll road near Middelburg while 13 others were injured. The day before motorists on their way to the Lowveld were stuck in traffic after a tragic accident claimed the lives of six people on the N4 toll road between Machadodorp and Belfast. He believes that if all road users can prioritise their own safety and that of others, deadly crashes will be drastically reduced. As part of the ongoing Easter visibility on the roads, traffic law enforcement officers have stopped and checked over 13 500 vehicles since Thursday in various ongoing Easter operations across the province. 0ver 5 000 vehicles went through various weighbridges. About 2 700 summonses were issued to motorists for various offences.
