Four people lost their lives on Tuesday evening when a light delivery vehicle and a sedan collided head-on, on the R38 Road between Kaapmuide and Louws Creek in Mpumalanga.
The sedan, after colliding with the bakkie, was swung across the road and subsequently collided with a truck.
The Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison said four victims died at the scene and they include the driver of the sedan, and three passengers.
'The occupants of the bakkie were reportedly not found at the scene,' said Moeti Mmusi, spokesperson for the Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison.
'The cause of the crash is not clear at the moment but reckless and negligent driving cannot be ruled out at this stage. The investigation into the crash is already underway.'

Meanwhile, Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Jackie Macie has called on motorists to drive with caution, especially in the dark, when visibility is reduced.
"While the government at all levels is putting programmes in place to make roads safer, it is the responsibility of every driver to obey the rules and use the road cautiously. Most of the crashes can be avoided if those who drive are highly alert at all times," Macie said.
The MEC is sending condolences to the bereaved families.

Next Stay Close ✕ His breakthrough came in 2017, when Mercedes signed him to replace the retired Nico Rosberg. During his five years with the Silver Arrows, Bottas partnered Lewis Hamilton in one of the most dominant eras in Formula 1 history. In many ways, he was the Scottie Pippen to Hamilton's Michael Jordan – undervalued and underappreciated. He contributed to five consecutive Constructors' Championships, securing 10 Grand Prix victories, 20 pole positions and 67 podium finishes. Though often cast in the role of supporting Hamilton's title campaigns, Bottas demonstrated both speed and resilience, earning respect for his work ethic and commitment to the team. In 2022, Bottas joined Alfa Romeo (later rebranded Sauber/Kick), where he took on a different challenge – helping to stabilise a midfield outfit and guide its technical development in preparation for Audi's arrival.

High Court mandates evaluation of pit bull dogs following alarming attacks in Caledon

A pitbull owner will have to deliver her three dogs to the local municipal pound to have them evaluated following three attacks at her home. Image: FILE The owner of two Pit Bull Terriers and a mixed breed dog has been ordered by the Western Cape High Court to deliver her dogs to the local pound for evaluation after the court found the dogs pose a risk to the public. The evaluation was necessitated following attacks on people who visited the private property from which a salon is run. Despite the dogs ordinarily being kept secure, in the backyard of their Caledon home, the court found they do, however, from time to time attack members of the public or visitors to Romanda Marais' property. Marais is a businesswoman and owner of a nail salon run from a wendy house on the property. On three occasions, the dogs attacked visitors to the property and their injuries necessitated hospitalisation of the victims for an extended period. Video Player is loading. Next Stay Close ✕ Judge Daniel Thulare ordered that Marais deliver the dogs to the Theewaterskloof Municipal Pound by August 26. If the dog owner fails to do so, the Theewaterskloof Municipality was authorised to impound them as set out in the Impoundment By-Law and to process the dogs in accordance with the law. Marais' attorney, Nazeer Parker, confirmed that he would consult with his client by the end of this week for them to decide on how they would proceed. In response to the judgment, Theewaterskloof Municipality said: 'The municipality notes the outcome of the recent court proceedings. Our responsibility remains to act in terms of the applicable by-laws and to prioritise public safety. We will therefore proceed in line with the court's decision.'

Police apprehend suspect linked to the tragic death of 11-year-old Esmine Franke

Esmine Franke was killed by a stray bullet outside her home in Kraaifontein. Image: Supplied POLICE have arrested a man allegedly found in possession of a firearm suspected to be used in the killing of an 11-year-old girl in Kraaifontein. Two others were wounded in the suspected gang-related shooting on Tuesday. 'On 20 August 2025, members received information that the firearm used in this incident was stored on a premises in Mapongwana Street, Wallacedene. "They operationalised the information and searched the identified premises where they confiscated a 9mm pistol with serial number removed and 11 rounds of ammunition. A 26-year-old male was arrested for possession of a prohibited firearm and ammunition,' police said. Esmine Franke was playing with her eight-year-old friend, when unknown gunmen opened fire. Shahieda Franke explained: "We were at home when we heard the gunshots, when we went out, there was no one. Someone called and said I must go and see her; she had been hit. "She was still alive, she couldn't talk, she squeezed my hand. When the ambulance got here, they treated my brother who was hit in the legs, and then they realised that Esmine was no longer alive. "They were sitting outside, and then a boy who is a gangster walked, and they came after him, and they didn't hit him at all." Video Player is loading. Next Stay Close ✕ The eight-year-old was shot in the back, and is receiving treatment at Tygerberg Hospital. Police confirmed the girl was fatally shot while an eight-year-old girl and a 19-year-old man were wounded during the incident in Wallacedene on Tuesday evening. Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk said the shooting occurred at about 7.20pm in Mti Street. "Kraaifontein police registered a case of murder and two counts of attempted murder following a shooting incident on Tuesday at about 7.20pm at a premises in Mti Street, Wallacedene, Kraaifontein, where an 11-year-old female was shot and fatally wounded, and an eight-year-old female and a 20-year-old male were injured. "According to reports, the victims were playing outside when an unidentified suspect approached and started to shoot in the street. All three victims were wounded by stray bullets." Van Wyk confirmed that the girl was declared dead on the scene by paramedics, while the two survivors were taken to the hospital for treatment. He added that the motive is believed to be gang-related and that the suspect fled and has yet to be arrested. Kraaifontein Community Police Forum chairperson Mawethu Sisila said the community was still trying to make sense of the tragedy. "We are shocked by what happened and strongly condemn it," he said. Ilitha Labantu spokesperson Siyabulela Monakali said the tragedy highlights the unsafe conditions in communities plagued by gangs. "That an 11-year-old child lost her life while playing outside is an indictment of a society that has failed to prioritise the safety of its most vulnerable members," he said. "Gang violence is not an isolated problem. It is rooted in the conditions of poverty, inequality, and neglect that continue to define life in many of our townships. The persistence of these killings reflects systemic failures to dismantle gangs, to provide meaningful alternatives for young people, and to deliver effective policing that communities can rely on. Until these failures are addressed, children will continue to die, families will continue to grieve, and communities will continue to be terrorised."
