Disney+ Inks New Deal to Bundle With Crave, TSN in Canada
Disney has expanded its content supply deal with Bell Media in Canada to offer a new streaming bundle that includes Disney+, Crave and TSN, starting later this year. The Canadian deal involving Disney and Bell Media continues an industry trend where streaming services are increasingly combined and marketed to subscribers for savings amid continuing cable cord cutting and consumers and ad dollars shifting online. And Bell Media is looking to offset declining Canadian viewership for traditional linear TV channels with more inroads into the streaming space. 'We're excited to expand our longstanding relationship with Bell Media, through these new offerings, making Disney+ even more accessible across Canada,' Shawn Praskey, vp, content sales & distribution in Canada said in a statement. Bell earlier this year launched new Crave subscription package that bundles in TSN sports content, with pricing starting at CAN$21.99 (US$16.10) a month. And Disney+ is available in Canada starting at CAN $8.99 (US$6.60) a month. The Disney+, Crave, TSN bundle will give subscribers access to original series like HBO's The Last of Us, The White Lotus, Max's And Just Like That and Hacks, Disney+'s Only Murders in the Building and Lucasfilm's Andor. Upcoming series include HBO's A Night of the Seven Kingdoms, the Game of Thrones spinoff, and season 3 of Euphoria. And TSN, which competes north of the border with rival Sportsnet from Rogers, will toss into the bundle NFL, NBA, FIFA World Cup games, F1 races and regional NHL games, among other content. ‘Industry' Creators on How Their Storytelling and Characters Have Evolved (in Bleepable Ways) and HBO's 'Fantastic Notes'
The traders of Pierpoint were in the London spotlight on Thursday as Industry co-creators Mickey Down and Konrad Kay shared some anecdotes and insights into their hit drama at the inaugural SXSW London during one of Thursday's Screen Keynote sessions. 'We were in development hell on Industry for three years,' Down recalled. 'We wrote the first episode like 60 times.' More from The Hollywood Reporter Disney+ Inks New Deal to Bundle With Crave, TSN in Canada New Lena Dunham, Sarah Snook Shows Touted as Universal U.K. TV Labels Execs Talk Sector Cuts Nickelodeon Acquires Animated 'Mr. Crocodile' Series, Based on French Children's Book He lauded HBO for ordering the show and allowing the creators to let the series evolve over time. 'It started off as a slice-of-life London thing,' Down shared. 'And that kind of unlocked the show.' Over time, the series and its characters have grown up, the duo highlighted. Down drew laughs, highlighting how Harry Lawtey's character Robert has gone from a 'two-dimensional fuckboy' to the 'emotional heartbeat' of Industry. Kay shared insight on the growth in terms of storytelling that the creative duo went through. He told the audience that 'we were interested in, but not confident enough in expanding the horizon of the trading floor to actually say something, maybe a little bit more about capitalism and Britain.' But over time, 'we started to look at newspapers, politics, the intersection of all that stuff in season three,' he noted. 'So when we came back for season four, we wanted to do an actual proper newspaper storyline, or an actual political storyline. We don't have to wed ourselves necessarily to the financial story. It takes us 18 months to make eight hours of TV. It's about how we are going to keep ourselves creatively engaged. And the truth is, we've got older, we become more interested in this stuff, it's just a natural broadening of the canvas to keep me and him engaged.' 'My and Mickey's creative impulse really is a negative one,' said Kay. 'That was what we really galvanized over as a creative duo, looking at stuff that we didn't like rather than what we like.' In their actions with HBO early on, 'we would be a little bit sharp-elbowed about the way we interacted with that stuff,' he also shared. 'And honestly, their notes are always fantastic, and they continue to be fantastic. And even if we don't end up doing one of their notes, it makes us interrogate something, or it makes us look at something two steps back. I think we've just become, naturally, a little bit more collaborative, and that comes from experience.' HBO renewed the darkly comic investment-banking drama, starring Marisa Abela, Harry Lawtey and Ken Leung, among others, for a fourth season in September. Season 3 featured their characters making a big bet on a green tech energy company led by a member of the British peerage, portrayed by Kit Harington, who told THR he's been a long-time fan of showrunner duo met as students at Oxford and went on to work in the finance world depicted in Industry. Shari Redstone Has Been Diagnosed With Thyroid Cancer
As the future of her father's sprawling entertainment empire hangs in the balance, Shari Redstone has made a startling health revelation, divulging that she has been diagnosed with thyroid cancer. The news, first reported by the New York Times, was confirmed by a spokesperson on Thursday, who said she was diagnosed earlier this spring. 'While it has been a challenging period, she is maintaining all professional and philanthropic activities throughout her treatment, which is ongoing. She and her family are grateful that her prognosis is excellent,' the spokesperson said. More from The Hollywood Reporter Nickelodeon Acquires Animated 'Mr. Crocodile' Series, Based on French Children's Book Paramount Global to Add Three New Board Directors As It Deals With Trump Lawsuit, FCC Review Paramount Plans Immersive 'Top Gun' Experience in Las Vegas Redstone's condition was discovered when she went to her doctor about two months ago for symptoms including fatigue. Redstone's thyroid gland was removed in a surgery that took place last month, she told the Times. After cancer cells were found to have spread to her vocal chords, she is currently undergoing radiation treatment. Her health troubles arrive as Redstone's Paramount Global is attempting to complete an $8 billion merger with Skydance Media, a transaction that is awaiting approval from the Federal Communications Commission. In a move that threatened to thwart the proceedings, President Donald Trump in November sued one of Paramount Global's key programs, CBS' 60 Minutes, alleging that the program had aired a 'heavily tampered interview' with his political rival, former vice president Kamala Harris, in a bid to bolster her presidential chances. While legal observers have argued the case has little merit and 60 Minutes did some routine television news editing, the Trump-appointed head of the FCC, Brendan Carr, reinstated a complaint against CBS over the issue, even as he has claimed he believes it is separate from Trump's $20 million suit. Fearing that Redstone would seek to settle the Trump suit to smooth the way for the Skydance merger, Democratic senators including Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren have called on her not to back down, calling the legal complaint 'an attack on the United States Constitution and the First Amendment' and an attempt to 'extort' 60 Minutes. In the meantime, CBS News leaders have suggested they're facing extra scrutiny as the merger remains in limbo. Producer Bill Owens left in April, saying he was unable to make 'independent decisions.' CBS News head Wendy McMahon resigned the next month, saying she and the company did not agree on 'a path forward.' More to come.
