‘Disturbing': Mrs Doubtfire star's wild plan to revive Robin Williams with AI
The idea came to Lawrence after watching one of Williams' old commercials. The actor, who died by suicide in 2014 at age 63, had done a computerised voiceover that Lawrence found eerily before its time. 'It's kinda like this very contemporary, modern, almost sort of foreshadowing of what's going on commercial that he did, where he did this computerised voiceover,' he said. 'And it always stuck with me. And then, during his passing, with the AI coming out, I'm like, 'Man, he's gotta be the voice of AI He's gotta be the voice in something.' So yeah, I would love to do that.' There's no denying Williams' voice is instantly recognisable. Hearing it again would likely spark nostalgia and joy for many. Still, using AI in a project like this raises serious concerns. Lawrence, clearly enthusiastic, suggested plenty of possibilities for Robin's voice in tech – even using it for driving navigation. 'It would be Robin!' Lawrence said. 'It would be so cool. I'm telling you.' Yelling at Siri or Alexa when you miss a turn is normal these days. But yelling at the voice of Robin Williams might come with some follow-up guilt. Williams' daughter, Zelda Williams, has publicly slammed AI recreations of her father. During the SAG-AFTRA strike in October 2023, she posted a statement on social media expressing her discomfort with the technology. 'I am not an impartial voice in SAG's fight against AI,' Zelda, 35, wrote. 'I've witnessed for YEARS how many people want to train these models to create/recreate actors who cannot consent, like Dad.' 'I've already heard AI used to get his 'voice' to say whatever people want and while I find it personally disturbing, the ramifications go far beyond my own feelings,' she continued. 'Living actors deserve a chance to create characters with their choices, to voice cartoons, to put their HUMAN effort and time into the pursuit of performance.' Lawrence was just a pre-teen when he played Williams' son in 1993's Mrs Doubtfire, and their relationship clearly made a lasting impression. At the first annual '90s Con in 2022, Lawrence shared how Williams – who struggled with substance abuse – warned him about the dangers of drugs during filming. '[Williams] was very serious. He was like, 'You know when you come to my trailer and you see me like that?'' Lawrence shared. 'He's like, 'That's the reason why. And now I'm fighting for the rest of my life because I spent 10 years doing something very stupid every day. Do not do it.' I stayed away from it because of him.' In an earlier interview with Entertainment Weekly, Lawrence reflected on two key lessons Williams taught him: the importance of compassion, and not judging others without walking in their shoes. 'He really quantified what it was to be a real artist for me in the sense that he was definitely,' Lawrence said, 'and I worked with some great people, and he was definitely the most brilliant artist I've ever worked with.'

Mrs Doubtfire star says AI could be used ‘with respect' for Robin Williams' voice
Matthew Lawrence, who co-starred with Robin Williams in Mrs Doubtfire, has expressed a wish to revive Williams's voice using artificial intelligence. Lawrence stated that any such project would require the full respect and explicit permission of Williams's family. He highlighted Williams's voice as iconic, noting its presence in animated films like Aladdin and Happy Feet, and its beloved natural baritone. The actor suggested that Williams's AI-resurrected voice could potentially be used as the voice of AI itself in a new project. This concept follows previous instances where cultural figures, including Andy Warhol and Val Kilmer, have been digitally resurrected using AI with their estates' consent.

Matthew Lawrence wants to use AI for 'something special' with Robin Williams' voice
Matthew Lawrence wants to use AI to do "something really special" with the late Robin Williams. The 45-year-old star played one of the comedy legend's children in Mrs Doubtfire and he is keen to get the consent of the late actor's family to work on a project using the voice of Robin, who took his own life in 2014. Matthew told Entertainment Weekly: 'Obviously, with the respect and with the okay from his family, I would love to do something really special with his voice, because I know for a generation, that voice is just so iconic. 'It's not just the fact that I knew him and worked with him. "It's in my head, it's in everybody's head, and it would be so cool." Matthew got the idea of using AI to recreate Robin's voice after he saw an old commercial starring the Good Will Hunting star which made him realise there were parallels to the modern day. He explained: 'It's kinda like this very contemporary, modern, almost sort of foreshadowing of what's going on commercial that he did, where he did this computerised voiceover. 'And it always stuck with me. And then, during his passing, with the AI coming out, I'm like, 'Man, he's gotta be the voice of AI. He's gotta be the voice in something.' So yeah, I would love to do that.' One thing Matthew would love to use AI to do with Robin's voice is to give out driving directions on a phone. He said: 'It would be so cool. I'm telling you." The former Boy Meets World actor previously praised Robin for the way he treated him like an adult when they made Mrs. Doubtfire. He told People magazine: "He really opened up. I was only 12. I mean this guy … Man, he was just so amazing to be able to give me the respect, almost as an adult, at 12 years old, to really get an open look into his life, the performer side and then also the private side, and how they wrestled with each other." And even after filming on the 1993 movie was complete, Robin made sure he stayed in touch with his young co-star and offered him advice when he needed it. Matthew said: "He stayed a part of my life, you know? That movie could have wrapped [and] like everybody else, he could have gone his separate way, but he didn't. "He stayed invested, and he gave me some incredible life lessons that definitely kept me from some dark places at times. And I'll just never be able to thank him enough for that."

Robin Williams' Mrs. Doubtfire costar shares bizarre wish to bring him back using AI... a decade after his death
More than 30 years after Mrs. Doubtfire first hit theaters, one of its stars is hoping to honor Robin Williams in a very modern way. Matthew Lawrence, who played one of the Hillard children in the beloved 1993 comedy, shared during a recent Comic-Con appearance that he'd love to see the late comedian's unforgettable voice used as a foundation for artificial intelligence, with the blessing of his family, of course. 'I would love — now, obviously, with the respect and with the okay from his family — but I would love to do something really special with his voice because I know for a generation, that voice is just so iconic,' Lawrence told Entertainment Weekly during a live-streamed interview promoting his new graphic novel project, The Lawrence Brothers Detective Agency. Lawrence, now 45, was just 12 when he starred alongside Williams in the hit film about a devoted father who disguises himself as a Scottish nanny in order to stay close to his kids after a divorce. The memories, Lawrence said, have stayed with him ever since. Williams died by suicide in 2014 at age 63, leaving behind a legacy of laughter, heart, and characters that transcended generations. For Lawrence. 'It's not just the fact that I knew him and worked with him and so it's in my head — it's in everybody's head. And it would be so cool,' the Marry Christmas star explained. Lawrence said he got the idea after watching an old commercial the Oscar winner was starring in and realized it had some interesting parallels to today. 'It's kinda like this very contemporary, modern, almost sort of foreshadowing of what's going on commercial that he did, where he did this computerized voiceover, and it always stuck with me' Lawrence said of the advertisement. 'And then, during his passing, with the AI coming out, I'm like, 'Man, he's gotta be the voice of A.I. He's gotta be the voice in something.' So yeah, I would love to do that.' During a previous interview with the outlet, Lawrence recalled the life lessons he learned from Williams, including compassion, on the set of Mrs. Doubtfire. 'He really quantified what it was to be a real artist for me in the sense that he was definitely... the most brilliant artist I've ever worked with.' 'But on top of that, he had the compassion, he had the humility, and he also had these things that he struggled with.' Regarding their upcoming graphic novel, the brothers; Matthew, Joey, 49, and Andy 37, are raising funds via Kickstarter for the project. They said the idea was sparked about a decade ago after Matthew got a nasty sunburn and started to peel. 'It's not just the fact that I knew him and worked with him and so it's in my head — it's in everybody's head. And it would be so cool,' Lawrence said of his idea Williams died by suicide in 2014 at age 63. Lawrence said his family would have to give their blessing before Williams' voice could be used for AI; Pictured in New York City in September 2013 'These two guys started making a joke that I was a lizard...' 'Matt shed a version of himself,' Andy interjected,' and then that version was the evil villain that caused havoc...' Matthew picked it up from there, adding, 'and we had to start our own detective agency to solve the crime.' They have teamed up with The Berkowitz Brothers who are veterans of the genre, along with artists Brian Bengal Yuran and Sean Von Gorman. In 2023, Williams' daughter Zelda spoke out against using artificial intelligence to re-create her father's voice. 'I am not an impartial voice in SAG's fight against AI. I've witnessed for YEARS how many people want to train these models to create/re-create actors who cannot consent, like Dad,' she wrote on her Instagram Story.
