HANOI — A pilot, who wanted to become the first Vietnamese-American to fly solo around the world, has died after her plane crashed in the US. Ms Anh Thu Nguyen, 44, was killed instantly on the morning of July 30 in Greenwood, Indiana, according to the Johnson County Coroner's Office. Driven by her aspiration to become the first Vietnamese woman to complete a solo circumnavigation of the globe, Ms Nguyen was in the second leg of her ambitious journey. Flight data from Flightaware shows the plane departed from Indy South Greenwood Airport at 10.45am local time on July 30 and was scheduled to land at an airport in Pennsylvania. However, just minutes after takeoff, her Lancair IV-P aircraft suddenly spiraled downward and crashed. The wreckage was later discovered on a hillside behind a Circle K gas station on Main Street in Greenwood. Frank Williams, a witness at the scene, described the crash as eerily silent. He added: 'There was no explosion, and there was no fire. I pulled right up, and I could smell fuel. As I got close to the plane, I could tell there wasn't a survivor.' The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are currently investigating the crash to determine its cause. Who was Anh Thu Nguyen? Born in Vietnam, Ms Nguyen immigrated to the United States at the age of 12. She earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics and a master's in aerospace engineering from Purdue University, followed by a PhD in aerospace engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech). She was passionate about inspiring Asian women to enter the aviation cockpit. 'As an Asian woman, I faced many obstacles and challenges to get to where I am today, especially adapting to a new culture, language, and life in the United States. I wanted to give back and inspire the next generation,' she once shared with Purdue University. In 2018, she founded the nonprofit organisation Asian Women in Aerospace and Aviation Inc., and later served as the chief flight instructor at Dragon Flight Training Academy in Georgia. The idea of becoming the first Vietnamese woman to fly solo around the world took shape in 2019, but it wasn't until July 27, 2025, that she officially launched the journey, flying from Oshkosh, Wisconsin to Indiana. Before departing Greenwood Airport on the day of the tragedy, she posted an inspiring update on her social media: 'I just completed the first leg of my solo flight around the world. This is more than just a flight. It's a mission to inspire the next generation of Asian female pilots and aerospace engineers and STEM professionals.' The heartbreaking accident has left her followers in deep mourning. Comments under her videos on Facebook, Instagram, and Threads are filled with messages of condolence: 'Rest in peace.' Uni dropout stabs brother, mum after graduation lie
Dropping out of an advanced computing degree, a Sydney man maintained a lie that he would graduate until he tried to kill his brother with a small fruit knife. Jacky Dang, 24, had been enrolled at the University of Sydney until he failed a single subject in early 2023 and did not enrol in any more. Claiming that he was still studying, he told his family his graduation ceremony was on May 24, 2024. The day before, he launched an unprovoked attack on his older brother Jackys who was playing computer games in their shared bedroom at their Marrickville home in Sydney's inner west. "The victim ... suddenly felt a hot sensation in the back of his neck," documents filed with the NSW District Court say. "He turned and saw the offender holding a knife by the handle in one of his hands. It was a small fruit knife." The victim had studied a biomedical science degree at the Australian Catholic University and had also dropped out while telling his parents he had graduated. "What are you doing? Is this about the graduation thing?" the older brother asked. "I turned out fine, you can stop this." The 24-year-old did not respond but rather launched into a ferocious attack, stabbing his brother in the face, upper-left arm and back. "I am going to die," his brother managed to type in a Discord chat that was open on his computer. Hearing yells, their 56-year-old mother ran into the bedroom and tried to intervene. Instead, Thri Truc Mai Nguyen was grabbed by her son who stabbed her in the throat. After Ms Nguyen took the knife and emergency services were called, the younger Dang sat silently on a dining room chair. He presented his wrists to be handcuffed when police arrived. During a recorded interview while in custody, Dang told officers he had homicidal and suicidal thoughts for a number of years. "(He) had given up on life and had thought to kill his family and then himself," the agreed facts sheet filed in court say. Dang intended to kill his brother and had hit his mother in the neck to get her to "back off". "He further explained that he waited for police to arrive, acknowledging his plan had failed and it would be best to hand himself in," court documents say. Without trauma-centre level emergency management, his brother would have died as a result of his nine stab wounds. He spent 13 days in hospital, five days of which were under sedation and intubation to aid his recovery. Ms Nguyen had one stab wound and spent four days in hospital. Dang later pleaded guilty to wounding with intent to murder and wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. He will be sentenced at Downing Centre District Court on August 14. Vietnamese beauty queen arrested for fraud over fibre gummies
Vietnamese authorities have arrested a beauty queen and social media influencer for consumer fraud after she promoted a counterfeit fibre supplement. Nguyen Thuc Thuy Tien had heavily marketed gummies said to be rich in fibre on her social media channels. But a public backlash erupted after product tests revealed this was untrue. A former winner of the Miss Grand International beauty competition, Ms Nguyen is a well-known personality in Vietnam and previously received accolades from the government. Ms Nguyen had promoted Kera Supergreens Gummies along with social media influencers, Pham Quang Linh and Hang Du Muc. Investigators said the product was the result of a joint venture between Ms Nguyen and a company set up by the two other influencers. The influencers claimed that each of their gummies contained fibre equivalent to a plate of vegetables. A member of the public sent the product for testing at a lab, which found that each gummy only contained 16mg of fibre, far from 200mg as claimed. Authorities then launched an investigation, which found that sub-standard ingredients that were low in fibre were used in the manufacture of the gummies. The product's packaging also did not state the fibre content, nor did it state that the product contained a high level of sorbitol, which is used in laxatives. The three influencers were fined in March, and apologised to the public. The following month, Vietnamese authorities arrested Mr Pham and Hang Du Muc as well as officials from their company and the gummies' manufacturer. They were charged with producing counterfeit goods and defrauding customers. On Monday, authorities announced the arrest of Ms Nguyen for allegedly deceiving customers. More than 100,000 boxes of the gummies were reportedly sold before sales were halted due to the scandal. After winning the Bangkok-based beauty pageant in 2021, Ms Nguyen became a celebrity sought after by many Vietnamese brands, and appeared on several reality TV shows. She also received certificates of merit from the prime minister and Vietnam's ruling Communist Party.
