Vietnamese beauty queen arrested for fraud over fiber gummies

Saudi Gazette20-05-2025
HANOI — Vietnamese authorities have arrested a beauty queen and social media influencer for consumer fraud after she promoted a counterfeit fiber supplement.
Nguyen Thuc Thuy Tien had heavily marketed gummies said to be rich in fiber on her social media channels.
But a public backlash erupted after product tests revealed this was untrue.
A former winner of the Miss Grand International beauty competition, Ms Nguyen is a well-known personality in Vietnam and previously received accolades from the government.
Ms Nguyen had promoted Kera Supergreens Gummies along with social media influencers, Pham Quang Linh and Hang Du Muc.
Investigators said the product was the result of a joint venture between Ms Nguyen and a company set up by the two other influencers.
The influencers claimed that each of their gummies contained fiber equivalent to a plate of vegetables.
A member of the public sent the product for testing at a lab, which found that each gummy only contained 16mg of fiber, far from 200mg as claimed.
Authorities then launched an investigation, which found that sub-standard ingredients that were low in fiber were used in the manufacture of the gummies.
The product's packaging also did not state the fiber content, nor did it state that the product contained a high level of sorbitol, which is used in laxatives.
The three influencers were fined in March, and apologized to the public.
The following month, Vietnamese authorities arrested Pham and Hang Du Muc as well as officials from their company and the gummies' manufacturer.
They were charged with producing counterfeit goods and defrauding customers.
On Monday, authorities announced the arrest of Ms Nguyen for allegedly deceiving customers.
More than 100,000 boxes of the gummies were reportedly sold before sales were halted due to the scandal.
After winning the Bangkok-based beauty pageant in 2021, Ms Nguyen became a celebrity sought after by many Vietnamese brands, and appeared on several reality TV shows.
She also received certificates of merit from the prime minister and Vietnam's ruling Communist Party. — BBC

Sheinbaum says Mexico has no proof of alleged Maduro ties to Sinaloa Cartel

MEXICO CITY — Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said Saturday her government has no evidence to support US claims linking Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro to the powerful Sinaloa Cartel. The allegations, tying Maduro to Mexico's largest drug cartel and the Venezuela-based Tren de Aragua gang, were recently raised by the administration of US President Donald Trump. "This is the first time we've heard about this issue. There is no investigation from Mexico related to it," Sheinbaum told reporters. "As we always say, if they have any proof, let them show it. We have no evidence related to that." US Attorney General Pam Bondi on Friday announced the doubling of a reward for information leading to Maduro's arrest, from $25 million to $50 million, calling him 'one of the largest narco-traffickers in the world and a threat to our national security.' The US has long accused Maduro of running a 'narco-state' and facilitating cocaine shipments to North America through alliances with transnational criminal organizations, including the Sinaloa Cartel. Maduro has denied the allegations, dismissing them as politically motivated. — Agencies

Senior Chinese diplomat Liu Jianchao taken in for questioning: WSJ

BEIJING: A senior Chinese diplomat considered a contender for future foreign minister has been detained by authorities for questioning, the Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday. Liu Jianchao, head of a department under the ruling Communist Party that oversees relations with foreign political parties, was 'taken away' after returning to Beijing from a work trip abroad in late July, according to people familiar with the matter, the report said. The reason for his detention could not be determined, it added. China's foreign ministry did not immediately respond to a request by AFP to confirm the report. Liu, 61, has previously served in key diplomatic roles including ambassadorships to the Philippines and Indonesia and foreign ministry spokesperson. He has also led various national and regional bodies tasked with implementing President Xi Jinping's signature crackdown on corruption. His detention represents the highest-level inquiry into a Chinese diplomat since Qin Gang, who was removed as foreign minister in 2023 following reports of an extramarital affair. Liu has been widely viewed as a rising figure in the Chinese diplomatic world. In early July, he accused the United States' defense chief of 'inciting confrontation and conflict' by urging American allies to bolster their militaries to counter China. His most recent public engagement was on July 29 in Algeria, following meetings in several African countries, Singapore and elsewhere late last month, according to the website of the International Department, which he currently heads.

Convicted rapist quits Australian parliament after losing legal bid to stay

SYDNEY — An Australian politician and convicted rapist has resigned from parliament moments before he was to be kicked out, after losing a legal challenge to remain. Gareth Ward, 44, was last month found guilty of sexually assaulting two young men, aged 18 and 24, between 2013 and 2015, and is now in custody pending sentencing. Earlier this week, Ward launched a legal bid to stop the New South Wales (NSW) parliament from expelling him, but it was dismissed on Thursday after the court rejected arguments that the move was an "affront" to democracy. Plans to expel him on Friday were thwarted when, less than two hours before a vote to remove him was due, Ward quit as the independent member for Kiama. Ward's resignation letter was received by parliament at 09:08 local time on Friday (00:08 GMT), shortly before a vote at 10:30 was due to expel him. His resignation - which comes years after the sexual assault accusations first emerged - means Ward will no longer receive a parliamentary salary. It also triggers a by-election in the south-coast NSW electorate Ward has held since 2011. In 2021, Ward quit as a state government minister and left the Liberal Party, but refused to leave parliament and was re-elected in 2023. During his legal challenge, Ward's lawyers argued that attempts to kick him out of parliament before the appeals process was finished was "an affront to the foundations of representative democracy". NSW Premier Chris Minns told the media on Friday that Ward's resignation "should have come earlier". "If you are convicted of some of the most serious charges - sexual assault in NSW - you can't sit as a serving member of parliament drawing a parliamentary salary," the Labor leader said. "How can you represent your community from behind bars?" Opposition leader Mark Speakman labelled Ward's legal bid to stay in parliament "disgraceful", and accused the former MP of "playing games" with the public and parliament. Ward, due to be sentenced next month, has said he intends to appeal the guilty verdict. — BBC
