Keris Strike exercise draws growing international interest, says army chief
LENGGONG: The Keris Strike Exercise, now in its 30th edition, continues to attract growing international attention, reflecting the success of Malaysia's long-standing multilateral military cooperation programme. Army Chief General Tan Sri Muhammad Hafizuddeain Jantan said this year's exercise saw the participation of observer officers from Thailand and Japan. "This shows that after more than 30 years, the exercise continues to gain recognition and trust from our partner nations. "It also reflects growing international confidence in this joint training initiative. We aim to involve more countries as observers in the future," he said following the final assault and closing ceremony of the Keris Strike Exercise Series 30/2025 at Felda Lawin earlier today. The exercise featured a live-fire drill conducted at the Tanjung Hantu Firing Range yesterday, involving the Malaysian Army's ASTROS II Multiple Launch Rocket System and the U.S. Army's HIMARS system. Muhammad Hafizuddeain said the event was made more significant with the presence of Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah, and Raja Permaisuri Perak, Tuanku Zara Salim. "It was a great honour for our armed forces to have Their Royal Highnesses witness the live-fire exercise. I'm fully satisfied with the level of readiness shown by the participating troops, especially during the final assault phase, which marked the climax of the exercise. We can confidently say the objectives of this joint training have been met," he said. He also addressed issues raised in the recent Auditor-General's Report (LKAN) 2/2025 regarding non-compliance in contract management, confirming that the National Audit Department is reviewing procedural lapses in one of the Army's earlier projects. "These will be rectified. Moving forward, we will be more vigilant and ensure contract managers pay closer attention to compliance and collection matters," he said. Last week, Auditor-General Datuk Wan Suraya Wan Mohd Radzi revealed significant weaknesses in procurement and contract administration for Malaysian Army armoured vehicles between 2020 and 2023. One of the key findings was the government's failure to collect RM162.75 million in late delivery penalties from the main supplier of the 8×8 GEMPITA armoured vehicles, despite the contract ending in December 2022. – BERNAMA

National defence a shared responsibility: Army Chief

Kota Kinabalu: National defence must be a shared responsibility between the military, government agencies, private sector and the wider public, said Army Chief General Tan Sri Muhammad Hafizuddeain Jantan. He said the importance of the Whole-of-Government, Whole-of-Society (WoGoS) approach outlined in the Defence White Paper and National Military Strategy 2.0. 'Defence is not the responsibility of the armed forces alone. It involves active participation from every sector of society,' he said at a conferment ceremony for honorary and volunteer Territorial Army officers held here. The ceremony saw the conferment of ranks to several individuals from both public and private sectors, recognising their roles in bridging civil-military cooperation. Managing Director of Boustead Plantations Berhad Datuk Zulkarnain Md Eusope was conferred the rank of Honorary Colonel. He was also appointed as a Participating Member of the Territorial Army Support Committee (Jakpaw) under the Ministry of Defence. Head of the Training Branch at the Reserve Officers Training Unit (Rotu) of the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) Major Wan Rizaila Wan Mamat Saufi was promoted to the rank of Lt Colonel. He now serves as Deputy Commandant of the unit. City Hall (DBKK) Mayor Datuk Seri Sabin Samitah was awarded the rank of Honorary Lt Colonel and appointed Deputy Chairman of Jakpaw Sabah. Also receiving the Honorary Major rank were Director of the Sabah Lands and Surveys Department Prof Datuk Sr Bernard Liew Chau Min, Sabah Deputy State Secretary (Development) Datuk Dr Ahemad Bin Sade and Manager of Eng Hin Giap Hardware Sdn Bhd Chye Chang Kheng. All were appointed as Jakpaw members in their respective states. 1,319 army recruits to enjoy revised salary scheme

Army Chief Jen Tan Sri Muhammad Hafizuddeain Jantan said the recruits will receive a starting salary ranging from RM1,710 to RM1,930, depending on their academic qualifications, compared to RM1,610 during their training period. 'Previously, (under the Malaysian Remuneration System), their pay was RM1,459. This batch is the first to enjoy the new rates, where diploma holders will earn more than those with Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM). 'I hope this will encourage more participation from the community, especially diploma holders, to join the army,' he told reporters after the Passing Out Parade for Young Male Soldiers Series 202/2024 here. For this intake, Sarawak recorded the highest number of recruits with 243 individuals. By ethnicity, Malays formed the majority with 1,007 individuals, followed by Bumiputra from Sabah and Sarawak (364), Indians (18), Chinese (five) and Orang Asli (four). Muhammad Hafizuddeain said the army continues to carry out various efforts to boost participation from other ethnic groups, including organising exhibitions and career talks at vernacular schools and engaging Territorial Army Committee members in every state to promote participation among non-Malays. He noted that economic factors may be the main reason for the lack of interest among youth in joining the armed forces, and expressed hope that the implementation of the SSPA would help attract more of them, particularly from non-Malay backgrounds. 'We do not face many issues in Sabah. What we need is more participation from Peninsular Malaysia. I hope the National Service Training Programme (PLKN) will help encourage more youths to consider the armed forces as a career path,' he said.

On a separate matter, Muhammad Hafizuddeain said the army would not compromise with any personnel who tarnish the image of the service. This includes a recent case involving a soldier suspected of molesting a student in Melaka. 'The individual is still under police remand. We will follow the outcome of the police investigation and take further action if the individual is found guilty,' he said.
