MMEA detains tugboat towing barge laden with logs in Bintulu
The tugboat, barge, and their crew have been detained for further investigation. BINTULU (May 13): The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) Bintulu Maritime Zone detained a tugboat approximately one nautical mile northwest of the Kemena River estuary yesterday. Bintulu Maritime Zone director Capt Muhammad Suffian Eldine Abdullah said during a routine patrol, the enforcement team inspected the tugboat, which was towing a barge laden with timber logs. He said at the time of inspection, the tugboat was travelling from Kudat, Sabah to Bintulu waters. 'Initial checks revealed the vessel was manned by six crew members, comprising a Myanmar national as a skipper, two local crew members, and two Indian nationals aged between 26 and 64 years,' he said. Muhammad Suffian said the tugboat is believed to have committed an offence under Section 65F (2) of the Merchant Shipping Ordinance (MSO) 1952, for submitting false or inconsistent information compared to that stated in the Domestic Shipping License (DSL), which provides for an RM2,500 fine upon conviction. The tugboat and its crew were detained and escorted to the Bintulu Maritime Zone Vessel Detention Centre before being handed over to MMEA investigators for further action. Tugboat, crew detained in Bintulu for violating shipping regulations

BINTULU (May 12): The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) Bintulu Maritime Zone detained a tugboat on Saturday, approximately three nautical miles northwest of the Kemena River estuary for violating shipping regulations. Bintulu Maritime Zone director Capt Muhammad Suffian Eldine Abdullah said the white tugboat was intercepted by an MMEA patrol vessel during routine patrols as it was heading towards open water. 'A preliminary inspection revealed that the vessel was operated by a crew of eight – six Indonesian nationals including the captain, one Myanmar national, and one Malaysian – aged between 23 and 51 years,' he said in a statement. He said the tugboat was found to have violated Section 22(2A) of the Merchant Shipping Ordinance (MSO) 1952 for failing to notify the Registrar of Ships in writing about the change of captain in its registration certificate. The offence carries a compound of RM2,500. The vessel and its crew were escorted to the Bintulu Maritime Zone Vessel Detention Centre and handed over to the investigating officer for further action. Muhammad Suffian reminded all maritime community members to comply with relevant regulations and observe maritime safety procedures to prevent and reduce the risk of untoward incidents at sea. MMEA detains passenger boat near Kemena estuary for maritime offence

BINTULU (May 12): The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) Bintulu Maritime Zone detained a passenger boat on Sunday for failing to notify authorities of a change of captain, an offence under Malaysian maritime law. Bintulu Maritime Zone director Capt Muhammad Suffian Eldine Abdullah said the vessel was intercepted around one nautical mile northwest of the Kemena River estuary during a routine patrol. An initial inspection found the boat was operated by two Malaysian crew members, aged 50 and 24. 'The vessel is believed to have violated Section 477(2) of the Merchant Shipping Ordinance (MSO) 1952, which requires any change of captain to be officially reported to the port officer. 'Non-compliance is subject to fines or compound action,' he explained in a statement. The vessel and its crew were subsequently detained and escorted to the Bintulu Maritime Zone Vessel Detention Centre, where they were handed over to investigators for further investigation. Muhammad Suffian reminded all maritime operators to comply with maritime laws and always follow sea safety protocols to help prevent unwanted incidents.

MMEA detains vessel, crew for breaching terms of fishing licence off Bintulu

BINTULU (April 25): An early-morning patrol by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) here today led to the detention of a local Class C fishing vessel for violating the terms of its licence. MMEA Bintulu director Muhammad Suffian Eldine Abdullah said the vessel was caught fishing approximately 10.2 nautical miles off Pantai Penipah, less than the 12 nautical miles from the coastline as stated in its fishing licence. 'The six local crew members on board, including the skipper, were all detained for further investigation under Section 8(b) of the Fisheries Act 1985. 'The Section provides a maximum fine of RM20,000, up to two years' imprisonment, or both upon conviction,' he said in a statement, adding that those detained were aged between 28 and 54. Muhammad Suffian said the vessel and its crew were escorted to the Bintulu Vessel Detention Centre and handed over to MMEA investigating officers for further action. He said MMEA is committed to tightening enforcement and maintaining law and order in Malaysian waters to protect the country's fishery resources from exploitation. 'The fishing community is reminded to always comply with regulations and prioritise safety while at sea. No compromise will be given for any violations,' he added.
