Cop charged over fatal shooting
KUCHING: A Bukit Aman traffic policeman, who allegedly shot a colleague to death in a car, has been charged with murder. L/Kpl Genesis Nitchell David Reddy (pic), 30, is charged with fatally shooting Muhammad Zaki Iderus, 34, in a car in Jalan Stephen Yong here on April 26. He nodded after the charge was read out before Magistrate Syarifah Fatimah Azura Wan Ali. However, no plea was recorded, as the case falls under the jurisdiction of the High Court. The accused will normally be charged later in the High Court, where his plea will be taken, when all legal papers for the trial are ready. Genesis is facing a charge under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which provides the death penalty or imprisonment for between 30 and 40 years and at least 12 strokes of the cane, Bernama reported. The court set June 10 for mention. Last month, the accused, together with five other men, was remanded in connection with the case. Three suspects, aged 25 to 39, were reportedly held for seven days, while the other three, aged 29 to 45, were remanded for four days. The victim reportedly died from a gunshot wound to the head and it is believed that the police had seized a pistol with 10 bullets.

Three suspects, aged 25 to 39, will be held for seven days, while the other three, aged 29 to 45, have been remanded for four days. Senior Assistant Registrar Heng Yi Min approved the remand applications under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder, with the orders taking effect from April 28, 2025. The suspects are represented by National Legal Aid Foundation (YBGK) lawyers Russell Lim and Zoe Chan. The case unfolded yesterday morning when two men arrived at the Batu Kawa police station around 5.30am, reporting that their friend had been shot while driving. Police later discovered the victim victim, identified as Muhammad Zaki Iderus, dead from a gunshot wound to the head. According to Padawan District Police Chief Supt Mohd Irwan Hafiz Md Radzi, police arrested the suspects at various locations between 4pm and 5.30pm on the same day – just hours after the case was reported. Alongside the arrests, the police also seized a a pistol with 10 bullets. 'Initial investigations found that this group was involved in the shooting incident, and the motive is still under investigation. 'The case was successfully resolved in less than 12 hours, and all suspects will be remanded to facilitate investigation,' said Mohd Irwan in a statement yesterday.
