Keegan Bradley faces Ryder Cup dilemma as US Team Captain's form causes awkward situation

United States skipper in form to be a player and not a captain Captain Keegan Bradley is making life tricky for himself and ex-Ryder Cup star Brad Faxon says he's perfect to play at Bethpage. The 38-year-old was selected to be skipper in September as the United States aim to rip back the trophy they lost to Europe in Rome. ‌ However, Bradley's form on the course continues to push him towards the awkward situation of being a potential member of the 12-man team. ‌ The 38-year-old is producing another top-class showing at The Memorial and sits in a tie for fourth heading into the final round. Bradley has veterans Jim Furyk, Kevin Kisner, Webb Simpson and Brandt Snedeker as assistants available to step up to the captain's role and, although he says he won't pick himself, Faxon, who played in 1995 and 1997, says he has to be a contender if he keeps up current form. Rory McIlroy 's putting coach said: 'I've always thought this Keegan Bradley story is remarkable, 38 years old, the youngest captain since Arnold [Palmer] back in 1963. And, you know, he got that call from Seth Waugh last year to be the captain and it surprised him. ‌ 'He always says, look, I'm only going to play if I finish in the top six. Well, if he made it into the top 12, he would be picked by any other captain, certainly. "And if Seth had called him not to tell him, hey you're going to be the Ryder Cup captain, if he said, look, would you rather be captain or rather play at Bethpage, he'd say, play all day, wouldn't he? ‌ 'So I think Keegan needs to be like: I could be a big part of this team. And Keegan's a guy that he's versatile, he can play either format because he's such a good hitter of the ball. And he can play with any other player. 'There are certain times when you make a pick where that particular player is only good in one format, or only is good with one or two other players. "I think Captain Bradley would be a great player and you could easily say to any of those assistant captains, you can be the captain, let me play. And the PGA America would surely give him that spot.' Bradley is delighted with his work at Muirfield Village and said: 'I feel like I got myself back in the tournament. Proud of the way I played.' Faxon believes Bradley is going to face a tough job at Bethpage whether he is captain or playing due to the strength of Luke Donald' s European side. Speaking on the Smylie Show, he said: 'How does the LIV golfers, how do they be part of the team? You think about Jon Rahm, Tyrell Hatton adding to the European team, the firepower that they have and I think they'll be the deeper of the teams, it looks like.'

Scheffler surges into Memorial lead on moving day

Scottie Scheffler has produced his best on a tough day at Muirfield Village, opening with 13 straight pars and then pouring it on at the end for a four-under 68 that gave him a one-shot lead over Ben Griffin after three rounds at the Memorial. Scheffler birdied four of his last five holes and took the lead when Griffin missed a three-foot par putt on the 18th. At stake for Scheffler is a chance to win for the third time in his last four tournaments and join Tiger Woods as the only back-to-back winners at the Memorial. "I don't know what the scoring average was today, but I was definitely proud of the way I finished and it was really challenging," Scheffler said. "Through 13 holes, I felt like I was playing really good and I was only even par. Just a hard course." Griffin, who won last week at Colonial, made five birdies and five bogeys over his last 13 holes. Scheffler was six shots behind his fellow American at one point and then it all changed so quickly. Griffin, who became the only player this week to reach 10-under par when he ran off three straight birdies, gave it all back with four straight bogeys. Scheffler was lurking, as always. The world No.1 has an uncanny knack of hanging around and winding up with the low score by the end of the day. This was no exception. "I did see that Ben got to 10 under, but it's not going to change my play in the middle of a Saturday," Scheffler, who has won the last eight times when holding the 54-hole lead, added. "This golf course is really challenging and no lead's safe around this place. I knew if I kept going and played a decent round, I would be in somewhat of a position to chase him down tomorrow." Nick Taylor (74) wound up three shots behind and for that he was thankful at the end. The Canadian went into the water and made double bogey on the diabolical par-3 12th, followed that with a bogey and was sliding out of contention. And then he holed out from fairway for eagle at the 14th, birdied the next hole and played that four-stretch in even par. He posted a 66 as the leaders were just getting started and is tied-fourth at three under with Jordan Spieth (72) and Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley (68). Adam Scott (73) is five over and the leading Australian while compatriot Min Woo Lee (76) is two shots further back.

Scheffler grabs lead at PGA Tour's Memorial Tournament

Scottie Scheffler's late birdie spree left the world number one on top of the leaderboard at the Memorial Tournament in Ohio (Michael Reaves) World number one Scottie Scheffler conjured a late birdie blitz to fire a four-under-par 68 and grab a one-shot lead after the third round at the PGA Tour's Memorial Tournament in Dublin, Ohio on Saturday. Scheffler, bidding to successfully defend his crown at Muirfield Village, rattled in four birdies in the final five holes to drop to eight under, one ahead of overnight leader Ben Griffin, who stumbled with an even-par 72. Advertisement "I don't know what the scoring average was today, but I was definitely proud of the way I finished and it was really challenging," Scheffler said afterward. "Through 13 holes I felt like I was playing really good and I was only even par. Just a hard golf course." Three-time major champion Scheffler, who started the day three off the pace, was forced to bide his time after opening his round with 13 pars. But the 28-year-old American got things going on the par-four 14th, draining a 10-foot birdie putt before making a birdie four on the par-five 15th, when his third shot from the edge of the green left him with a tap-in. A par on 16 left him at two under for the day but Scheffler was soon on the move at the par-four 17th, when he stuck his approach to eight feet and then rolled in the birdie putt. Advertisement Another birdie on the 18th, with Scheffler draining a 14-foot birdie putt, thrust him into a share of the lead alongside Griffin. At that stage, Griffin looked to have overcome the worst of a roller coaster round to hang on to the lead. The in-form American, chasing his third PGA Tour win of the year, had got off to a smooth start after a trio of early birdies on the sixth, seventh and eighth holes. But four straight bogeys derailed his progress and allowed the chasing pack to close. Griffin steadied the ship with back-to-back birdies on 14 and 15 leaving him on 10 under, five clear of the field. - 'No lead safe' - Advertisement Yet Scheffler's late charge narrowed the deficit and ensured Griffin headed to the 18th with a share of the lead. He looked to have done enough to finish the day alongside Scheffler when his third shot from the greenside rough left him with a five-footer to par. But Griffin's short putt rolled wide for bogey, leaving him with the daunting task of having to chase Scheffler in Sunday's final round. "I felt like I was starting to separate myself midway through and then kind of got to some tough holes and didn't execute very well," Griffin said. "You can do that out here. Tomorrow I've got to clean up some of those holes, make sure I stay aggressive." Advertisement Scheffler, meanwhile, said he had not panicked after seeing Griffin go five shots clear at 10 under earlier in the round. "No lead's safe around this place," Scheffler said. "I knew if I kept going and played a decent round, I would be in somewhat of a position to chase him down tomorrow." Canada's Nick Taylor is third on the leaderboard on five under, three behind Scheffler, following a two-over-par 74. Austrian Sepp Straka is tied for fourth on three under alongside Keegan Bradley and Jordan Spieth. rcw/bb
