Philanthropist gifts woman driver auto on Raksha Bandhan
Mumbai: An auto driver, Sarika Mestry, received an autorickshaw from a philanthropist on Saturday, as a Raksha Bandhan gift that will ensure financial independence and a steady source of income securing her daughters' future. Mestry, a resident of Amboli, started driving an autorickshaw a few months ago after her husband, who also drove the three-wheeler, got diagnosed with cancer. A chance encounter with philanthropist Aneel Kashi Murarka during a regular fare changed her life. Murarka handed Sarika the new vehicle at Lokhandwala in Andheri, where she regularly plies. Mestry tied a rakhi to Murarka to express her gratitude, calling him "an elder brother". Mestry had been driving a rented auto that ate into her daily earnings, leaving her with a pittance to take home. The philanthropist, who heads NGO Ample Mission, said, "Sarika reminded me of what true grit looks like. The greatest joy in life is to be independent, and I wanted to gift her precisely that." Mestry took Murarka for the first ride in her new auto at Andheri. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Mumbai: Woman driver gets new autorickshaw as Raksha Bandhan gift
Last Updated: Mumbai, Aug 10 (PTI) For Sarika Mestry, Raksha Bandhan this year turned out to be special, as she received an autorickshaw from a philanthropist, a gift that will ensure financial independence and a steady source of income that will secure her daughters' future. Sarika, a resident of Amboli in the western suburbs of Mumbai, started driving an autorickshaw a few months ago after her husband, who also drove the three-wheeler, got diagnosed with cancer. A chance encounter with philanthropist Dr Aneel Kashi Murarka during a regular fare changed her life. Dr Murarka on Saturday handed Sarika the new vehicle in the Lokhandwala area of Andheri, where she regularly plies. She tied a rakhi to Dr Murarka to express her gratitude, calling him 'an elder brother". The gift has fulfilled her 'biggest dream" on the festive occasion, she said. Sarika had been driving a rented autorickshaw, but the rent ate into her daily earnings, leaving her with a pittance to take home. Dr Murarka hailed a ride with Sarika recently and learnt about her hardship during their brief interaction. The philanthropist, who heads Ample Mission, an NGO, said Sarika's grit moved him to act. 'I didn't want her to keep paying rent endlessly. I wanted her to keep every rupee she earns — for her home, her children, and herself," he said. 'Sarika reminded me of what true grit looks like. The greatest joy in life is to be independent, and I wanted to gift her precisely that." Sarika took Dr Murarka for the very first ride in her new autorickshaw, a short but emotional drive through the lanes of Andheri, which she knows so well, now filled with a sense of triumph and hope for a bright future. 'Beaten up for asking to see attendant's ID: Senior citizen punched in face, son assaulted over parking dispute in Kolkata
KOLKATA: A 62-year-old central Kolkata trader, and his 31-year-old son were allegedly assaulted by a parking attendant outside a private bank branch located on Vivekananda Road following a dispute over parking fees on Wednesday morning. According to police reports, Anil Murarka and his son, Anmol Murarka, were attacked by the local parking attendant, Vinod Sharma, around 11am when they arrived at the bank for some work. The incident occurred when Murarka, a resident of Lake Town, requested they be allowed to complete their work before paying the parking fee, stating he would return after completing his work at the bank and pay him. It takes hardly two to three minutes to withdraw this money. On Wednesday, the accused targeted me. He first claimed that no parking was allowed at the spot and therefore I had to pay a special parking fee. I said I will pay if my car stays parked for more than five minutes, as is the rule everywhere. I also said that if the rule was any different at Vivekananda Road, I should be shown the relevant documents. I also asked him to show his ID and show the tender. I also asked him why he was not carrying the parking machine and generating the parking slips. The attendant immediately started abusing me and my son. He then even punched me on the forehead. I am already ill, and this was a major blow for me. At the police station, I came to know that he misbehaved with a female driver too. I have pleaded with cops to see what transpired through CCTV footage. My brother is receiving treatment and fighting cancer, and I am already very disturbed. This was completely unforeseen," the senior citizen told TOI. Witnesses say Sharma became aggressive and began using abusive language before physically assaulting the elderly man with slaps and kicks. When Anmol attempted to intervene and protect his father, Sharma allegedly turned violent towards him as well. Both father and son sustained injuries in the altercation. A case was registered at Girish Park Police Station under sections 126(2) and 115(2) of the Bengal National Security Act based on Murarka's formal complaint.
