Philanthropist gifts woman driver auto on Raksha Bandhan
Mestry, a resident of Amboli, started driving an autorickshaw a few months ago after her husband, who also drove the three-wheeler, got diagnosed with cancer. A chance encounter with philanthropist Aneel Kashi Murarka during a regular fare changed her life. Murarka handed Sarika the new vehicle at Lokhandwala in Andheri, where she regularly plies. Mestry tied a rakhi to Murarka to express her gratitude, calling him "an elder brother".
Mestry had been driving a rented auto that ate into her daily earnings, leaving her with a pittance to take home. The philanthropist, who heads NGO Ample Mission, said, "Sarika reminded me of what true grit looks like. The greatest joy in life is to be independent, and I wanted to gift her precisely that." Mestry took Murarka for the first ride in her new auto at Andheri.

HSRP deadline extended to November 30, but with riders
Nagpur: The transport commissioner's office has extended the deadline for installing High Security Registration Plates (HSRP) on all vehicles until November 30. The transport office has warned that this is the final deadline, and action will be taken from December 1. Despite repeated deadline extensions by the state transport department, a large number of vehicles have not even registered yet. Out of 22,34,921 vehicles in Nagpur district, 16,70,437 vehicles have not yet registered for HSRP installation. However, transport commissioner Vivek Bhimanvar issued an order on August 14 warning that if registration for HSRP is not done, transport department services will be stopped. So, services like vehicle transfer, removal of mortgage note, re-registration, vehicle modifications, and other services will not be available for vehicle owners without installing HSRP. The deadline for installing HSRP in Maharashtra was earlier March 31, 2025, which was then extended to June 30. Subsequently, orders were issued to change number plates by August 15. However, as there was poor response despite the deadline extension and technical difficulties from the administration's side, a new extension has been granted. Vehicles purchased before April 1, 2019, do not have these number plates. Therefore, they will have to complete this process within the given deadline, otherwise a fine of Rs1,000 will be imposed, the transport department has warned. In the district, 5,64,484 vehicles have registered for HSRP installation so far, while 16,70,437 vehicles remain. Of these, 3,74,679 vehicles have been fitted with number plates. Number plates have not been installed on 18,60,242 vehicles yet, so vehicle owners should register immediately and protect themselves from further action, appealed regional transport officer (Nagpur rural) Vijay Chavan. Road accidents claim 5,975 lives in state in six months of 2025
Mysuru: In the first six months of 2025, as many as 5,975 people died in road accidents across the state. Karnataka recorded 21,937 accidents in this time frame, and as many as 27,456 people were injured in these accidents. According to the data shared by transport minister Ramalinga Reddy, in response to a question raised by MLC KS Naveen, in the past five and a half years, 60,115 people died in 2.13 lakh road accidents in the state. In Mysuru district alone, 1,730 accidents were reported from Jan 1 and June 30. A total of 329 people lost their lives and 1,998 persons were injured. The highest number of deaths in this time period was reported from Bengaluru (390), followed by Tumakuru (367). According to MLC Naveen, Karnataka has the biggest road network in the country. "The money collected for road safety awareness is wasted on post-accidental interventions and ineffective awareness campaigns. Tamil Nadu govt was able to bring down road accidents through an effective awareness campaign and interventions a few years ago. But in Karnataka, we failed to bring down the accidents," he said. "The police check for drunk drivers only within the city limits. Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Back Pain Treatments That Might Surprise You! Every road accident has a long-lasting impact, and causes a huge loss for the SGDP," he explained. Lakshman SG, a road safety activist said that the need of the hour is more enforcement drives during night, and early morning hours. "Drunk driving on the state and national highways are more, hence vigilance outside the city limits is required to make our roads safe," he said.
