Pierce Brosnan supports assisted dying and reveals how he'd like to die
Pierce Brosnan hopes when he dies he gets to enjoy a "cup of tea" before saying goodbye. The 71-year-old actor and his Thursday Murder Club co-star Dame Helen Mirren, 79, have both spoken out in support of assisted dying, which plays a role in film, which is an adaptation of Richard Osman's mystery novel series. Dame Helen told Saga Magazine: "I absolutely believe in assisted dying." And the James Bond legend added: "So do I. I've watched the suffering of dear ones. "I think when my time comes, I'd like to be able to have the choice to say: 'Okay, let's have that cup of tea and say goodbye.' " However, Dame Helen also pointed out how the film is a reminder of the beauty of growing old. She said: "The great thing about a movie like this is that it reminds everyone: "'As an older person I have a brain. I have agency, energy, commitment, passion and intellect. It doesn't all stop when you're 40.' " Elsewhere in the interview, Pierce admitted he struggles with his new identity as an "older" person after spending so many years as a Hollywood hunk. He explained: "I don't see myself as an old man at all. But I suppose I would be considered an old man by some and I am getting older, that's for sure." Earlier this year, Dame Helen urged young people to make "little changes now to help them later in life" as she acknowledged the "complications" of growing old. The Age UK ambassador said: "Whatever you may think about ageing, it's something we must all try to embrace rather than fear. 'It's no secret that for many, getting older will come with its complications – specifically there will likely be aches and pains along the way, getting out and about and living as independently as we're used to in our younger years may not be as easy to do. "This is why I'm supporting Age UK's Act Now, Age Better campaign, they're encouraging everyone in their 50s to make little changes now to help them later on in life. "It doesn't have to be joining a gym; it can just be small changes like taking a short walk or yoga, which I still enjoy."

Pierce Brosnan U-turns on a female Bond, now saying: ‘It has to be a man'
The 72-year-old actor has now said 007 'has to be a man'. Brosnan, who played Bond in four movies between 1995 and 2002, wished Amazon well in its takeover of the franchise and said he was 'excited' to see the 'next man' take on the iconic role. The GoldenEye star discussed the next portrayal of 007 and told Saga magazine: 'Oh, I think it has to be a man.' This goes against remarks he made in 2019 when he told The Hollywood Reporter that a woman playing the next Bond would be both 'exciting' and 'exhilarating'. I'm such a feminist, but James Bond has to be a guy The MobLand star, who was the fifth actor to take on the role of the fictional secret agent, had said that it was time to 'put a woman up there'. But now, speaking of Amazon's takeover of the franchise, he said: 'I wish them well. I'm so excited to see the next man come on the stage and to see a whole new exuberance and life for this character. 'I adore the world of James Bond. It's been very good to me. It's the gift that keeps giving,' the actor, born in Navan, Co Meath, said. 'And I'm just a member of the audience now, sitting back, saying: 'Show us what you're going to do'.' Helen Mirren (80), who will star alongside Brosnan in the new Thursday Murder Club film, also reiterated her previous opinion that the next Bond should be 'a guy'. The Oscar-winning actor told Saga: 'I'm such a feminist, but James Bond has to be a guy. You can't have a woman. It just doesn't work. 'James Bond has to be James Bond, otherwise it becomes something else.' English actor and star f the Kick-Ass films Aaron Taylor-Johnson (35) is among the favourites to succeed Daniel Craig and take on the iconic role. Other British stars such as Idris Elba, Theo James and James Norton are also said to be contenders. Earlier this year, long-serving producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G Wilson – the daughter and stepson of original Bond producer Albert 'Cubby' Broccoli – announced they had ceded creative control of the franchise over to Amazon MGM Studios. The family had held the franchise since the first 007 film, Dr. No in 1962. The £770m (€891m) deal sparked concern among fans who feared it would lead to the 'Americanisation' of the films. There was also online speculation that Jeff Bezos's company would 'dilute' Bond and turn it into a media universe with multiple films and spin-off series like MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe). In June, it was announced that Oscar-nominated film-maker Denis Villeneuve – known for Dune – will direct the next Bond film, which will be produced by Amy Pascal and David Heyman. It was also announced earlier this year that Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight will write the script. Amazon has not given any hints on who will take over the 007 role after Craig announced he was stepping down.

Pierce Brosnan backtracks after calling for next James Bond to be a woman
Former James Bond star Pierce Brosnan has seemingly backtracked on his calls for the next 007 to be played by a woman. The Irish actor, 72, was famously the fifth actor to play Bond, starring in four films from 1995 to 2002 before Daniel Craig's reign began in 2006's Casino Royale. Since Craig bowed out in 2021's No Time to Die, speculation has been rife over which A-lister will step into the fictional secret agent's shiny shoes, with Aaron Taylor-Johnson currently the front-runner. However, many have suggested a change in sex for the role, calling for women to not only be side characters as the beautiful Bond Girls but to take the helm as the main Secret Service character. Previously, Brosnan threw his support behind the proposed changes, exclaiming to The Hollywood Reporter in 2019: 'Yes! 'I think we've watched the guys do it for the last 40 years. Get out of the way, guys, and put a woman up there.' He added that it would be 'exhilarating' and 'exciting' to see a woman take over after decades of male Bonds. But now, the Mamma Mia! star looks to have done a U-turn. In a new interview to promote his Thursday Murder Club film, co-starring Dame Helen Mirren, Brosnan told Saga Magazine: 'Oh, I think it has to be a man.' He continued: 'I wish (Amazon) them well. I'm so excited to see the next man come on the stage and to see a whole new exuberance and life for this character. 'I adore the world of James Bond. It's been very good to me. It's the gift that keeps giving. 'And I'm just a member of the audience now, sitting back, saying, 'Show us what you're going to do'.' His comments come after Amazon MGM Studios took creative control over the 007 franchise, and it was revealed last month that Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight would be writing the script for the next film. Dune filmmaker Denis Villeneuve will also direct. Fellow actor Dame Helen is also championing a male Bond, keen to keep with tradition despite her proud 'feminist' status. The Oscar-winning actress, 80, shared: 'I'm such a feminist, but James Bond has to be a guy. You can't have a woman. It just doesn't work. 'James Bond has to be James Bond; otherwise, it becomes something else.' Dame Helen previously told The Standard that 'the whole concept of James Bond is drenched and born out of profound sexism' and added: 'Women have always been a major and incredibly important part of the Secret Service; they always have been.' Meanwhile, Brosnan has remained vocal about Bond's future since it emerged that there was a vacancy, sharing his advice for the next actor to step up to the challenge. 'There's so many great actors out there who could portray this character. I have no idea who, I have no idea. I wish whoever it is great success.' And while he previously expressed interest in returning to the role himself as a 'romantic notion', he later ruled it out. Brosnan later admitted to GQ that he felt it 'was best left to another man, really. Fresh blood'. We currently have no idea when to expect the big announcement that will fully launch Bond's next era. Until then, rumours will have to keep swirling, with names such as Theo James, Henry Cavill, Jack Lowden, James Norton, Josh O'Connor, Regé-Jean Page, and Paul Mescal in the mix with the bookies. Taylor-Johnson, 35, though, has been the frontrunner for a long time, only fuelling speculation when he recently penned a deal with Omega, the luxury watch brand that has featured in Bond films since 1995's Golden Eye. More Trending Then, at the 28 Years Later premiere, he played coy when Deadline quizzed him on his next project. 'I can't talk about it,' he replied before being escorted away. The identity of the next Bond Girl is also uncertain, but hot faves at the moment are Sydney Sweeney, Zendaya, Eve Hewson, Nicola Coughlan, and Michelle Keegan. Got a story? Dame Helen Mirren stuns Pierce Brosnan, Jimmy Fallon and The Tonight Show audience with unexpected 'tomatoes are bisexual' revelation
Dame Helen Mirren has delivered a surprise botany lesson that sent The Tonight Show audience into fits of laughter. The 80-year-old British acting legend, appearing alongside her Thursday Murder Club co-star Pierce Brosnan, shared her newfound tomato knowledge while host Jimmy Fallon made salsa from his homegrown produce. "Incidentally, I just want to give you a tip about growing tomatoes," she told Fallon during the live show on Tuesday evening. "You know the little flower? Well, a good way to get a tomato out of a flower is you have to tremble the flower like this," she added, bending a finger and wiggling it in demonstration. "Did you know that?" Fallon instantly burst into laughter, urging her to "stop doing that" and insisting, "I'm not doing that- at all- to my tomatoes!" "You've got to. A tomato is a bisexual thing, you see," Mirren replied, doubling down with, "Well, it is!" prompting more laughter from Fallon, Brosnan and the audience. "I looked it up very recently because I had a problem with my tomatoes. "It's bisexual, so you have to go around to each tomato, each flower, and go like this," she added, repeating the hand motion. After asking Fallon if she could smell the tomato, Mirren took a sniff and responded to Brosnan's query about its bouquet with a blunt: "Not really." When Fallon prepared to slice the tomato for salsa, the Academy Award-winning actress hid her face, exclaiming, "Ahhhh! How can you be so cruel? I'm amazed." She later declared the salsa "really fabulous", saying "Demi died a noble death" in apparent reference to the tomato. Shortly after the live interview aired, fans flooded social media with praise for the bit. "Love British humour, Helen is hilarious!" one wrote, while another said: "Everything about this interview was perfection." Others commented on the pair's enduring charm, while a handful felt the segment "missed the mark". Regardless of fans' opinions about the interview, Mirren's research appears accurate. According to Seed Collection Australia, tomato flowers are indeed bisexual, as they contain both male and female reproductive parts. Mirren, a celebrated actress with a career spanning over six decades, was appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) by the late Queen Elizabeth II in 2003. Her accolades include an Academy Award, five Emmy Awards, a Tony Award, four BAFTA Awards, and a Laurence Olivier Award. One can only assume that her fruit and vegetable garden is equally as impressive.
