Dame Helen Mirren stuns Pierce Brosnan, Jimmy Fallon and The Tonight Show audience with unexpected 'tomatoes are bisexual' revelation
The 80-year-old British acting legend, appearing alongside her Thursday Murder Club co-star Pierce Brosnan, shared her newfound tomato knowledge while host Jimmy Fallon made salsa from his homegrown produce.
"Incidentally, I just want to give you a tip about growing tomatoes," she told Fallon during the live show on Tuesday evening.
"You know the little flower? Well, a good way to get a tomato out of a flower is you have to tremble the flower like this," she added, bending a finger and wiggling it in demonstration.
"Did you know that?"
Fallon instantly burst into laughter, urging her to "stop doing that" and insisting, "I'm not doing that- at all- to my tomatoes!"
"You've got to. A tomato is a bisexual thing, you see," Mirren replied, doubling down with, "Well, it is!" prompting more laughter from Fallon, Brosnan and the audience.
"I looked it up very recently because I had a problem with my tomatoes.
"It's bisexual, so you have to go around to each tomato, each flower, and go like this," she added, repeating the hand motion.
After asking Fallon if she could smell the tomato, Mirren took a sniff and responded to Brosnan's query about its bouquet with a blunt: "Not really."
When Fallon prepared to slice the tomato for salsa, the Academy Award-winning actress hid her face, exclaiming, "Ahhhh! How can you be so cruel? I'm amazed."
She later declared the salsa "really fabulous", saying "Demi died a noble death" in apparent reference to the tomato.
Shortly after the live interview aired, fans flooded social media with praise for the bit.
"Love British humour, Helen is hilarious!" one wrote, while another said: "Everything about this interview was perfection."
Others commented on the pair's enduring charm, while a handful felt the segment "missed the mark".
Regardless of fans' opinions about the interview, Mirren's research appears accurate.
According to Seed Collection Australia, tomato flowers are indeed bisexual, as they contain both male and female reproductive parts.
Mirren, a celebrated actress with a career spanning over six decades, was appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) by the late Queen Elizabeth II in 2003.
Her accolades include an Academy Award, five Emmy Awards, a Tony Award, four BAFTA Awards, and a Laurence Olivier Award.
One can only assume that her fruit and vegetable garden is equally as impressive.

John Cena doesn't want to get in the way of the current WWE roster
John Cena doesn't want to "take time away" from WWE's next big superstars. The 48-year-old wrestling legend turned Hollywood actor is set to retire from his in-ring career when his current farewell retirement tour comes to an end in December, and he's opened up about why the timing is just right. Appearing on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, he said: "I remember when I was a young kid back in 2002 thinking I'd never get a chance, and then when I did I came up with a young, hungry class. "I think if I hang around any longer than now, I'm just taking a time away from those young guys who can [get] the next chance to make an impact. "It's time, man, it's time." Cena - who will face Logan Paul on August 31 at WWE's Clash In Paris premium live event - admitted he doesn't want to "start dwelling" on his career just yet. He said: "What a ride it's been! WWE moves really fast - it's like you guys, we always do shows. Very rarely do we have time to look in the rearview mirror. "Now that I'm in the farewell tour, the last thing I wanna do is start dwelling on moments that might have been. "In January, I'm gonna look in the review and eflect on all of this, but I wanna have my feet on the ground and enjoy all the moments the audience gives me for this last 11 [appearances]. "I've done a tonne of stuff in my career, I've been in front of some crazy crowds. But I've never been in front of the crowd that our current roster calls 'the greatest crowd in WWE history' in Lyon, France." While Cena won a record breaking 17th world championship at WrestleMania 41 earlier this year, he insisted there is still a lot to experience before he hangs up his boots. He added: "I've never heard the so-called 'greatest crowd in WWE history', and it's supposedly in Lyon. "So even in this tailend stretch I'm still learning, I'm still experiencing new things, I'm still grateful."

Austin Butler goes viral awkward dancing at Bad Bunny concert, blames ‘eating edible', ‘didn't want attention'
Austin Butler has revealed an unexpected detail behind his now-viral dance moves at Bad Bunny's Puerto Rico residency earlier this month. Appearing on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon on Tuesday, August 12, the 33-year-old actor said he had believed he would simply be in the audience. Instead, they ended up on a secondary stage where the rapper performs during part of his set. Butler said he had taken an edible 'right before the show,' calling it something that 'seemed like a good idea' at the time, until it kicked in. The Elvis star joked that while he doesn't enjoy being the centre of attention, the combination of the music, atmosphere, and Puerto Rican culture made it impossible not to move. 'So, suddenly I'm on stage with Bad Bunny and the edible is working,' Butler said. 'It was wild … I'm falling in love with Puerto Rican culture and the dancing and everybody is so sexy and amazing… and then the other part of me is like, 'Don't dance, because you'll take attention away from him'.' In the viral clip, Butler is seen smiling and swaying his hips with his arms crossed. He explained that crossing his arms felt like a safe way to avoid stealing the spotlight while still enjoying the music. 'Every time I uncrossed my arms, I felt like I was drawing attention to myself. So I was like, 'This is okay,'' he said. Butler also admitted he didn't want to be compared to 'the Ben Affleck thing at the Grammys' where viewers thought Affleck wasn't enjoying himself. 'You don't want to be the sad guy … but you also don't want to be the guy who's dancing crazy and drawing attention.'It was Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez' memorable appearance at the Grammy's, that fuelled the first rumours of a rift. Affleck quickly became an internet meme after JL was caught telling a very bored Affleck to enjoy himself. JLo told him: 'Look more friendly. Look motivated.' before Affleck replied: 'I might'.
