Trad, techno and throwbacks: Galway's Big Top line-up has something for everyone
West is best this festival season, with the Galway International Arts Festival returning once again. The arts festival is a staple of the city that was once named the Capital of Culture (never forget), where international legends and local heroes head to the tent in the heart of the city. But who's headlining in the Big Top this July? View this post on Instagram A post shared by Amble (@ambleofficial) Kicking off the Big Top season, contemporary folk band Amble are continuing their huge tour of the country in the arts festival. The trio, who just met two years ago and bonded over their love for storytelling will be heading to Galway this July, with the lads recently speaking to about their remarkable formation. Sophie Ellis-Bextor's career renaissance continues, with her heading out west this summer. Pic: GMCD Noughties fans, rejoice — two of the biggest hitmakers from the era are heading out west. After Saltburn revitalised her career and her absolute smash that is Murder on the Dancefloor, Sophie Ellis Bextor will be enjoying her career renaissance in Galway, and won't be alone — with Unwritten hitmaker Natasha Bedingfield. A huge nostalgia trip awaits Galwegians. The Mary Wallopers will be returning to Galway this summer, but a man down following Sean McKenna's departure earlier this year. Pic: Sorcha Frances Ryder Despite the departure of founding member Sean McKenna earlier this year, the Dundalk folk band are set to bring their tour out west following huge gigs in Dublin and Cork before going international. The lads are on hand to put on another memorable show this summer. These lads are everywhere this summer, with Galway just one stop on their huge international tour. The Kildare band will be entertaining out west alongside other dates in Cork, Limerick and Letterkenny, and always put on one hell of a show. The UK DJ isn't coming alone when he heads to the big top — he's bringing some homegrown talent with him. The garage artist will be bringing his high energy set to Galway alongside Dublin techno artist Tommy Holohan, but Galwegians will be delighted to see Shampain on the marquee — with the G-Town Records co-founder (and Poblacht barber) joining the pair for what's set to be a massive set.

Doctor Who's Ncuti Gatwa withdraws from BBC role - and here's who's replacing him
Ncuti Gatwa has had to pull out of the 2025 Eurovision final due to "unforeseen circumstances". The Doctor Who star was set to read the UK's National Jury results during the Eurovision's Grand Final on 17 May. However, the BBC has now announced that Gatwa is "no longer able to participate as Spokesperson" for the UK, with 'Murder on the Dancefloor' singer Sophie Ellis-Bextor stepping in for him. "Due to unforeseen circumstances, unfortunately Ncuti Gatwa is no longer able to participate as Spokesperson during the Grand Final this weekend," the BBC said in a statement. "However, we are delighted to confirm that BBC Radio 2's very own Friday night Kitchen Disco Diva Sophie Ellis-Bextor will be presenting the Jury result live from the UK." While he's no longer participating in the Grand Final on 17 May, fans will be able to see Gatwa in Doctor Who's Eurovision-themed episode earlier that evening. Related: The episode will focus on the Interstellar Song Contest as planets compete across the universe, and feature cameos from Rylan Clark and Graham Norton. Meanwhile, representing the UK for the real-life Eurovision this year is band Remember Monday with their song 'What The Hell Just Happened?'. "'What The Hell Just Happened' is exactly how we're feeling right now! It's all very surreal; our friendship goes so far back, and we definitely never imagined that we'd be doing anything like this," the band said when they were announced in March. "When you're a kid and people ask you what you want to be when you grow up, an absolute classic is 'I wanna be a pop star', so the fact that we're getting the chance to live that dream as three best friends is just wild." The Eurovision 2025 Grand Final will air Saturday 17 May on BBC One. Doctor Who airs on BBC One in the UK and Disney+ elsewhere. Classic episodes of Doctor Who are available on BBC iPlayer in the UK. Sophie Ellis-Bextor: ‘You were supposed to be adventurous, having one-night stands and drinking guys under the table'
It's hard to believe that Sophie Ellis-Bextor has a son almost as old as her 2001 track, Murder on the Dancefloor and even less so that the 21-year-old is the eldest of five.

Gary Barlow pleasantly surprised after eating kangaroo for first time
Gary Barlow tucked into some kangaroo meat during the opening episode of Wine Tour: Australia. Having got a Sydney-based Take That gig out of the way, the musician was seen hooking up with local comedian Tim Minchin for a bite to eat at Port Jackson Bay, and after sampling a plate of rock oysters together, the pair were served a marsupial fillet. Although fans might've had their fingers crossed for a struggle, Barlow absolutely loved it. "Kangaroo may be an Aussie icon, but it's also one of the most sustainable meats you can eat," the popstar told viewers in a voiceover. "These guys don't need much water, they don't churn out methane like cows and they leave a tiny carbon footprint compared to the traditional livestock. Nutritionally, the meat is lean and packed with protein, and when it's cooked properly it's apparently delicious." It was then served with "posh mashed potato" and a quandong jus. "Oh my goodness. It's so good!" grinned Barlow after enjoying his first forkful. "Great food, great wine, great day, great company." Minchin, meanwhile, was relieved to finally taste kangaroo when it's been cooked properly. "That is not how kangaroo used to taste when I cooked it," he said. "I could never get it right, that is so good! We used to feed kangaroo to our dog, it used to be pet food. I just don't think many people know how to cook it. "It's actually environmentally the much smarter meat for us to eat down here." Elsewhere on the show, the 54-year-old caught up with Sophie Ellis-Bextor, whose tune 'Murder on the Dancefloor' rocketed up the music charts again following a viral Saltburn scene. She was the support act for Take That's vineyard concert and proceeded to drink wine before going out on stage. Barlow didn't similarly throw caution to the wind though; simply swilling the booze around his mouth and spitting it out. Gary Barlow's Wine Tour: Australia airs on ITV1 and ITVX.
