2 men charged in fatal shooting of Dundas, Ont., father Zachary Shuman last month
Social Sharing Hamilton police have charged two men with second-degree murder in the shooting last month of 25-year-old Zachary Shuman in Dundas, Ont. At a news conference Tuesday, Det. Staff Sgt. Sarah Beck of the Hamilton Police Service's homicide unit said Andrew Kowalik, 30, of Dundas was arrested on Sunday and Mussie Gebremariam, 27, of Kitchener was picked up the following day in Toronto. Both men appeared in court on Monday and were held in custody. Shuman was found unresponsive in the parking lot of an apartment building at 77 Governors Rd. shortly after 5 p.m. He was pronounced dead at the scene the same day, according to police. He was a single father to a three-year-old girl, according to a GoFundMe page set up by members of his family to raise funds to support his daughter. His parents "are now facing the unimaginable loss of their son while stepping in to raise their granddaughter," the page said. "This tragedy has left a hole that cannot be filled." Vehicles first interacted down the street Until this week, little was known about the interaction between Shuman and the occupants of another vehicle. Police previously said Shuman, driving a grey Dodge Ram pickup truck, and the drivers of a a blue Ford Edge SUV interacted at a Metro parking lot before proceeding to the lot down the street, where Shuman and his truck were found. Beck said Tuesday that investigators believe a meeting at the Metro parking lot between Shuman and the accused was planned. "We do know that there was a disturbance [between the two parties]," Beck said. "What the actual nature of that discussion was, we don't know." From there, police said, the blue SUV linked to the accused drove into the apartment building lot first, with Shuman's truck following. Witnesses later saw the SUV leaving the scene. "Only one person we believe was the shooter," Beck said, but added two people were involved. She declined to identify who police believe fired the shots. Police said all three men had known each other for several years. At least one of the accused was known in relation to drug trafficking, police added. Beck said investigators do not know if the reason for the meeting was drug-related, but believes they were "part of the involvement in this case." The SUV was recovered in Kitchener and the firearm used in the shooting has not been found. Beck said Shuman's family is still grappling with the loss. "While the family is aware of the arrest, they're still going through their process and grieving." Beck said extensive video canvassing across Hamilton and the Greater Toronto Area, as well as search warrants executed over the weekend, helped lead to the arrests. She also thanked community members for responding to appeals for tips about the vehicle and a possible witness. Police said the investigation is ongoing, but no suspectsother are being sought.
