Published on: Wednesday, August 06, 2025 Published on: Wed, Aug 06, 2025 By: Lagatha Pius Toyos Text Size: Julia (centre) capturing a commemorative photo with aid recipients during the Mutiara GRS Ziarah Amal programme in Tawau. TAWAU: Mutiara Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) continued its series of welfare tours through the Ziarah Amal Tawau programme, reaching out to those in need in the district on Saturday. The programme, organised by the Welfare Bureau and the Visits Bureau of Mutiara GRS, with the delegation led by wife of the Chief Minister, Datin Seri Julia Salag, reached out to special needs children, single mothers, and special education students at several schools around Tawau. Advertisement Julia said the programme is a continuation of Mutiara GRS's year-round efforts to visit various districts and deliver direct assistance to communities in need. 'Last month we were in Nabawan, today (Saturday) in Tawau, and next month we will visit another interior area.' 'This is a special experience for us as we get to engage with special needs children and assist those in need,' she said. She hopes this effort will inspire other non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to also take an active role in advocating for community welfare. Advertisement Meanwhile, one of the aid recipients, Sumarti Calla, 53, from Kampung Ranggu, expressed relief at being selected, given the increasingly challenging cost of living. As a single mother, she said the financial and material assistance she received had been a great help in supporting her four children, including three who are still in school. She said that with the rising cost of living, many single mothers don't know where to begin, but she felt relieved and grateful to receive support from Datin Seri Julia and Mutiara GRS. 'I sell food, some days I earn RM100, other days less. This assistance has been a great help to me,' she said, holding back tears. Meanwhile, Rusia Mahmud, 58, from Kampung Sungai Gading, Wakuba, received the assistance on behalf of his mother, a single mother currently undergoing treatment for gallbladder swelling. He said that his family deeply appreciates the assistance from Mutiara GRS, which means a great deal to them, as they honestly did not expect that anyone would still remember or care. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Mutiara GRS delivers relief in Tandek visit
Published on: Friday, July 11, 2025 Published on: Fri, Jul 11, 2025 Text Size: Juliah (left) visiting the PPKI classroom. KOTA MARUDU: Mutiara GRS, the charitable organisation of Sabah elected representatives' spouses, continued its community outreach by delivering aid to two Community-Based Rehabilitation Centres (PDK) and five Integrated Special Education Programmes (PPKI) in the district. Its president, Datin Seri Juliah Salag, said the contributions which included food supplies and cash were aimed at easing the burden of the centres and supporting the continued operation of special education institutions. 'We provided food items such as biscuits and other daily necessities, along with a cash contribution of RM100 for each PDK to help with their daily needs,' she told reporters during the organisation's 'Ziarah Amal Tandek' visit to SMK Bandau on Tuesday. Juliah said that as a welfare-based organisation, Mutiara GRS encourages elected representatives' spouses to stay informed about the welfare of children and local community issues in their respective areas. 'Though these children differ in their abilities, many of them show exceptional potential in areas like visual arts and graphic design. With proper training, they can achieve a bright future,' she said. The visit also included an educational tour of the pineapple plantation in Kampung Gana to expose participants to agriculture and entrepreneurship. 'This plantation has strong potential to be promoted as a main centre for pineapple and rubber production in Sabah, which can help improve the livelihood of the local community, especially those in the hardcore poor category,' Juliah said. Among the recipients of aid were PPDK Kota Marudu, PPDK Tandek, PPKI SMK Bandau, PPKI SMK Tandek, PPKI SK Timbang Batu, PPKI SK Marak Parak and PPKI SK Talantang. Also present were Mutiara GRS Vice Presidents I, II and III; Datin Seri Cecilia Edwin Kitingan, Datin Seri Linda Ewit and Datin Dg. Deepen knowledge of marriage rights, Muslim women told
Published on: Friday, June 20, 2025 Published on: Fri, Jun 20, 2025 Text Size: Juliah (middle) poses for a group photo with other guests and participants of the forum. Kota Kinabalu: Muslim women are urged to deepen their understanding of the rights within the institution of marriage as provided under Syariah law, so they do not continue to fall victim to injustice, including abuse, divorce and denial of maintenance or property rights. The Chief Minister's wife, Datin Seri Juliah Salag, said injustices against women in marriage often stem from women's own lack of knowledge and understanding of the rights guaranteed to them under Islamic law and legislation. Advertisement 'Many women do not realise that they have rights regarding maintenance, matrimonial property, protection from abuse and fairness in divorce. 'This lack of awareness causes them to remain victims,' she said at the opening of the Madani Women's Forum: Women's Rights in Marriage According to Syariah Law at the Sabah Federal Government Administrative Complex Auditorium. Juliah, who is also President of Mutiara GRS, rejected the perception that women are oppressed in Islam, emphasising that the religion upholds the dignity of women fairly and recognises their vital role in society. 'Islam does not differentiate between men and women in terms of responsibilities and rewards. In fact, women hold a highly respected position in the development of families and civilisation,' she said. Advertisement Highlighting the role of women in the family institution, Juliah said a mother is the first school for her children and forms the foundation of society. She added that when women understand their rights, they are not only able to protect themselves, but also play a critical role in raising morally upright generations and building strong families. She called for women's wellbeing not to be taken lightly, as it directly impacts the stability of society and the nation. Juliah commended the organisation of the forum as an important platform for sharing knowledge, experiences and empowering women with accurate and relevant legal understanding. 'This effort is highly significant because many women still lack clarity about processes such as marriage registration, dissolution of marriage, child custody rights and management of property after divorce,' she said. She hoped more forums and similar programmes would be organised so that the knowledge gained could be shared with more women, including those at the grassroots level. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
