Deepen knowledge of marriage rights, Muslim women told
Published on: Fri, Jun 20, 2025 Text Size: Juliah (middle) poses for a group photo with other guests and participants of the forum. Kota Kinabalu: Muslim women are urged to deepen their understanding of the rights within the institution of marriage as provided under Syariah law, so they do not continue to fall victim to injustice, including abuse, divorce and denial of maintenance or property rights. The Chief Minister's wife, Datin Seri Juliah Salag, said injustices against women in marriage often stem from women's own lack of knowledge and understanding of the rights guaranteed to them under Islamic law and legislation.

'This lack of awareness causes them to remain victims,' she said at the opening of the Madani Women's Forum: Women's Rights in Marriage According to Syariah Law at the Sabah Federal Government Administrative Complex Auditorium. Juliah, who is also President of Mutiara GRS, rejected the perception that women are oppressed in Islam, emphasising that the religion upholds the dignity of women fairly and recognises their vital role in society. 'Islam does not differentiate between men and women in terms of responsibilities and rewards. In fact, women hold a highly respected position in the development of families and civilisation,' she said.

She added that when women understand their rights, they are not only able to protect themselves, but also play a critical role in raising morally upright generations and building strong families. She called for women's wellbeing not to be taken lightly, as it directly impacts the stability of society and the nation. Juliah commended the organisation of the forum as an important platform for sharing knowledge, experiences and empowering women with accurate and relevant legal understanding. 'This effort is highly significant because many women still lack clarity about processes such as marriage registration, dissolution of marriage, child custody rights and management of property after divorce,' she said. She hoped more forums and similar programmes would be organised so that the knowledge gained could be shared with more women, including those at the grassroots level. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Ukraine says eastern front stabilised after recent Russian thrust
FILE PHOTO: A view shows a burned vehicle and anti-drone nets installed over a road near the frontline town of Dobropillia, amid Russia's attack on Ukraine, in Donetsk region, Ukraine August 10, 2025. REUTERS/Oleksandr Ratushniak/File Photo KYIV (Reuters) -Ukrainian troops have stabilised the battlefield in an area of eastern Ukraine where Russian forces had made a sudden push this week to pierce Ukrainian defences, the regional governor said on Thursday. Ukraine said small groups of Russian infantry had thrust some 10 kilometres (six miles) toward its main defensive line near the town of Dobropillia, raising fears of a wider breakthrough that would further threaten key cities. The advance, just days before Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin were due to meet in Alaska, appeared aimed at pressuring Kyiv to give up land in pursuit of peace three-and-a-half years into Russia's invasion of its neighbour. "The situation in the Dobropillia sector has stabilised," Vadym Filashkin, governor of the embattled Donetsk region, wrote the Telegram messaging app. "Thanks to the heroic efforts of our Defence Forces, the front line is reliably holding." Kyiv's military, which has played down the scale of the Russian thrust, had dispatched extra forces to the area including units of the battle-hardened Azov Corps. General Staff spokesperson Andriy Kovalyov, in comments to the Interfax Ukraine news agency, echoed Filashkin's statement and credited Azov forces with inflicting heavy enemy casualties. The Russian thrust had also fuelled criticism of Ukraine's military high command. Defence analyst Konrad Muzyka wrote on X that Russian forces had made "minimal gains" in the area on Wednesday but had inched forward further south, near the strategic city of Pokrovsk. Preachers Urged To Instil Malaysia MADANI Values, Use Simple Language - Mohd Na'im
PUTRAJAYA, Aug 14 (Bernama) -- Preachers are encouraged to instil noble values embodied in the Malaysia MADANI concept and use language easily understood by their target audience to ensure messages are delivered effectively, says Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar. He said that with Malaysia currently holding the ASEAN Chairmanship, the universal values in Malaysia MADANI should be expanded throughout the region via the volunteer network of the Annual Informal Meeting of Ministers of Religion of Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore (MABIMS). 'Of course, MABIMS volunteers play an important role as they go to the ground to meet the target audience, so we hope they can use the right techniques or methodologies in preaching so that the message is effectively conveyed to the community. 'We know the values of sustainability, prosperity, respect and compassion — all of these are emphasised in building a MADANI society, and these values are very close to the essence of Islam itself. We aim to embed and convey them (to the community) through MABIMS volunteers,' he told the media after attending the MABIMS Preaching Volunteers Gathering (HISDAM) programme here today. The three-day programme, which began yesterday, was jointly organised by the Yayasan Dakwah Islamiah Malaysia (YADIM), the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM) and the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Council, and attended by about 200 volunteers. Mohd Na'im said preachers should also use language that was simple and aligned with local culture so that the message of Islam could be delivered clearly and benefit the target audience. He said that using overly complex language could cause confusion and hinder understanding of Allah's commands. At the event, Mohd Na'im received resolutions adopted during HISDAM from YADIM president Datuk Dr Hasan Bahrom. Among the resolutions were making HISDAM a regular joint programme to gather preaching volunteers from Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei and Singapore, as well as a platform to strengthen and unite the regional preaching volunteer movement.
