NCDMV warns of text payment scams

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. (WNCT) — The N. C. Division of Motor Vehicles is alerting the public about a surge in fraudulent text message scams targeting residents. According to a NCDOT press statement, these scams falsely claim to request payment for fees, fines, or tolls and may appear to come from the NCDMV. Citizens are urged to report any suspicious texts as spam and delete them immediately. Do not click on any links or provide personal information in response to these messages. NCDOT tips to protect yourself from scams: Be cautious of unsolicited texts requesting payment or personal information. Verify any NCDMV-related inquiries through official channels. DMV begins Saturday hours in Kernersville

The N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles will begin Saturday walk-in service hours this weekend in the Kernersville office at 810-A N. Main St. This year, the division is expanding from 16 to 20 the number of offices offering services from 8 a.m.-noon on 11 Saturdays from May 31-Aug. 23 (offices will be closed on June 28 and July 5). Kernersville is among the four new offices with Saturday hours, along with Elizabeth City, Clayton and Durham East. Saturday hours also are offered at the DMV office in Winston-Salem at 2001 Silas Creek Parkway. Walk-in services will be provided, no appointment necessary. Last summer, nearly 17,000 customers were served at 16 offices during the 12 Saturdays of the 2024 season. Services that will be offered during the Saturday hours include driver license or ID cards, renewals or duplicate orders, address changes, REAL ID issuances, and road tests for customers that have already completed the knowledge and written tests. Anyone considering a visit to the DMV should first check to determine if they can complete their business online. NCDMV offers many online services, including driver license and ID card renewals, ordering duplicate licenses and ID cards, address changes and voter registration applications. With TSA now checking for REAL IDs, DMV Commissioner Paul Tine is encouraging North Carolinians to be informed about requirements for air travel: Unless you have upcoming air travel or will be visiting a federal building, there is no need to rush to the DMV. DMV continues to issue REAL IDs. Passports, military IDs, and global entry cards are all acceptable substitutes for a REAL ID. To learn more about REAL ID requirements and guidance, visit

License plate agency in Brunswick to reopen in new location

The N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles will soon reopen a license plate agency at a new location in Brunswick County. The office will begin providing service under a new contractor, according to a news release from the North Carolina Department of Transportation. Here's what to know. The office is located at 4891 Long Beach Road, S.E., Unit 6 (Food Lion Shopping Center) in Southport. The office will reopen on Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2025. The office will be operated by James Mills. It will operate from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday, except on state holidays. Mills said residents have pushed for reopening another plate agency in the Southport area since the former N.C. License Plate Agency in Southport closed. The Southport license plate agency shut down in 2023 due to contract violations, said North Carolina Department of Transportation DMV Communications Manager Marty Homan. In North Carolina, NCDMV oversees license plate agencies, but the agencies are managed by private businesses or local governments. With the Southport office reopening, the county now has three license plate agencies. The other two are in Bolivia at 30 Government Center Drive NE and Shallotte at 5300 Main St. Suite A. License plate agencies offer vehicle registration services and title transactions as well as vehicle license plate renewals, replacement tags, handicap placards and duplicate registrations. Cheryl M.
