DMV begins Saturday hours in Kernersville

Yahoo27-05-2025

The N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles will begin Saturday walk-in service hours this weekend in the Kernersville office at 810-A N. Main St.
This year, the division is expanding from 16 to 20 the number of offices offering services from 8 a.m.-noon on 11 Saturdays from May 31-Aug. 23 (offices will be closed on June 28 and July 5).
Kernersville is among the four new offices with Saturday hours, along with Elizabeth City, Clayton and Durham East.
Saturday hours also are offered at the DMV office in Winston-Salem at 2001 Silas Creek Parkway.
Walk-in services will be provided, no appointment necessary.
Last summer, nearly 17,000 customers were served at 16 offices during the 12 Saturdays of the 2024 season.
Services that will be offered during the Saturday hours include driver license or ID cards, renewals or duplicate orders, address changes, REAL ID issuances, and road tests for customers that have already completed the knowledge and written tests.
Anyone considering a visit to the DMV should first check to determine if they can complete their business online. NCDMV offers many online services, including driver license and ID card renewals, ordering duplicate licenses and ID cards, address changes and voter registration applications.
With TSA now checking for REAL IDs, DMV Commissioner Paul Tine is encouraging North Carolinians to be informed about requirements for air travel:
Unless you have upcoming air travel or will be visiting a federal building, there is no need to rush to the DMV.
DMV continues to issue REAL IDs.
Passports, military IDs, and global entry cards are all acceptable substitutes for a REAL ID.

Stretch Your Dollar: Programs, strategies to make DMV college costs more palatable

MCLEAN, Va. () — One minute you're cheering as your student turns their tassel at graduation, the next you're in shock after seeing college tuition prices. College is more expensive than ever, and if you've talked to any graduate drowning in student debt, you might start to rethink attending your dream school. But there are ways to bring those costs down—and some of them may surprise you. Finding summer jobs for teens in the DMV Brock Jolly of The College Funding Coach, a nationwide company that prepares families to choose and pay for college, said families should weigh a college's financial fit just as much as its academics, location and campus culture. His first piece of advice is to draw a line in the sand, determining early on what your family can truly afford and how you will pay. 'Determine whether you're eligible for financial aid or not,' Jolly said. 'If you can qualify for need-based aid, our objective is to show your family how to optimize or maximize your need-based aid eligibility.' Strategies vary by case; for example, his advice for business owners is entirely different from his guidance for W-2 employees. In the D.C., Maryland and Virginia region, higher household incomes can sometimes work against you—especially when compared to families in areas with lower living costs. Tax planning a few years ahead of college can help position your family to receive more aid. 'Stretch those dollars as far as possible and make your money work really effectively, whether that is qualifying for scholarships, using, dollars that you have set aside, using cash flow, figuring out tax minimization strategies, etc.,' Jolly said. How to get your share of $95 million Apple settlement Discrepancies between in-state and out-of-state tuition can be a deciding factor. Jolly said some DMV families save big simply by moving across state lines to position their students to attend state universities. 'That might save $40,000 a year, times three more years,' he said. If a student's intended major isn't offered at their in-state school, certain reciprocity programs allow students to pay in-state rates at certain out-of-state partner schools, including the State Authorization Reciprocity Agreement (SARA), the Academic Common Market (ACM), and the Midwest Student Exchange Program (MSEP). 'You can search by state, you can search by academic institution, and you can say, what are the programs that are available at the schools that I'm considering?' Jolly said. Community colleges in the DMV offer savings and academic rigor. Pathways programs at Northern Virginia Community College or one of Maryland's local colleges promise strong students admission to a four-year state college university after two years. That route can cut tuition by about 40%, and Jolly said future employers won't know—or care—that you didn't start at a four-year school. 'The diploma is from the four-year institution, and that's all future employers know,' he said. Students in D.C. don't have the same in-state college options as their neighbors in Maryland and Virginia, but there's a major perk: a city grant that covers up to $10,000 a year for students attending eligible colleges nationwide. The D.C. Tuition Assistance Grant is offered to D.C. Public School students. DCTAG reimburses public colleges and universities up to $10,000 per year, for a lifetime maximum of $50,000 per student. It reimburses eligible private colleges and universities up to $2,500 each year, for a lifetime maximum of $12,500 per student. Experts warn that tariffs schemes could trick consumers into paying fake fees Jolly said roughly 2,500 colleges and universities are approved by DCTAG to receive the grants. 'That program is really broad,' Jolly said. 'If you live in D.C. and have a college-bound student, it's really worth looking at that list of schools.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. How did the Boulder attack suspect have a Colorado license?

(COLORADO) — More details about the Boulder Pearl Street Mall suspect, 45-year-old Mohamed Sabry Soliman, are surfacing days after the attack. Soliman, who lived in El Paso County, entered the U.S. in August 2022 on a B-2 tourist visa, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The visa is used for foreign tourists' visits to the U.S. DHS further confirmed that the visa expired in February 2023. DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin told AP News that Soliman filed for asylum in September 2022 and was granted work authorization in March 2023, which had also expired. On Monday, June 2, Congressman Jeff Crank reported that Soliman had received a Colorado-issued driver's license in July 2024, a year after his visa had expired. 'Instead of turning him over to ICE, Colorado lawmakers gave him a sanctuary pass,' Crank wrote via X (formerly known as Twitter). 'Shocker.' FOX21 News reached out to the Colorado Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), which confirmed that Soliman had received a Colorado driver's license 'The DMV has reviewed the history of this individual and confirms that federal law and Colorado law and rule were followed in the issuance of a Standard driver's license, which are authorized under the REAL ID Act and are not REAL ID compliant,' the DMV said. The DMV further explained that under Colorado law, 'if a person provides valid proof of temporary lawful presence at the time of issuance, the DMV will issue the person a Standard Credential. Standard credentials are valid for 3 years, and include a black banner that identifies it as a Standard credential and language on its face that states it cannot be used for federal purposes.' The law, C.R.S. 42-2-506, states that an individual who is temporarily present in the U.S. could apply for an identification document if they had any documents that showed the individual is lawfully present in the U.S. and 'satisfied the department'. DMV law for undocumented Colorado residents changed on March 31, 2025. A Colorado bill signed in 2024, SB24-182, updated issuance requirements for undocumented residents and would allow them to obtain a non-Real ID compliant driver's license. According to the DMV, effective on March 31, applicants would no longer need a Social Security number or individual taxpayer identification number (ITIN), proof of Colorado income tax, or printed documentation of Colorado residence for the preceding two years. Applicants would need to provide: A completed CO-RCSA affidavit One proof of current Colorado residential address One form of identification: passport, consular card, or military identification card from the home country 'Colorado lawmakers and our governor gave him a sanctuary pass,' Crank said during a meeting. 'This tragedy could have been avoided.' When Soliman applied in July 2024, the requirements of providing a social security card or ITIN, proof of Colorado income tax, or printed documentation of Colorado residence were still applicable. Soliman was granted a work permit in 2023, according to DHS; however, they did not say how he obtained it. Asylum seekers become eligible for work authorization 180 days after arrival. The Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) said Soliman had tried to purchase a gun in November 2024 at Scheels in Colorado Springs. His application was processed through the CBI InstaCheck and was denied. 'He never appealed his denial,' CBI said. 'This denial was based on information from the NCIS (National Instant Criminal Background Check System). He would later be denied a Concealed Handgun Permit (CHP) through the CBI and El Paso County Sheriff's Office on December 30, 2024.' Soliman is accused of committing an attack on a group of protesters who were demonstrating at the Pearl Street Mall in Boulder. According to an arrest affidavit, Soliman confessed to committing the attack. He is currently being held in Boulder County Jail on a $10 million cash bond only. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
