‘Urgent need for improvements' discussed at NCDMV press conference with Gov. Josh Stein
RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — Website upgrades, better pay, new positions and more efficient processes were some of the promises made by Gov. Stein and NCDMV Commissioner Paul Tine Friday morning as they addressed the widespread issues being felt by customers. They joined Transportation Secretary Joey Hopkins at the agency's East Raleigh office to highlight the 'urgent need for improvements' amid statewide challenges and what the future looks like. The press conference began with Sec. Hopkins inviting a DMV customer named Jocelyn to share her personal experience getting her daughter her driver's license. After driving over an hour to make it to the DMV office, she said she pleaded with staff after standing in line outside so long that her feet swelled. She was not only advocating to get them a seat, but to also come in and out of the rain to be helped before they closed. They were the last people served that day, Jocelyn said. As the NCDMV's new leader, Commissioner Tine said there is 'no shortage of opportunities to improve in the department.' As part of a 'Team DMV' plan, Tine said he visited many offices from the mountains to the coast to see where improvements are most needed to make the offices function better for North Carolinians. In that time, he said he observed issued from systems and processes to the physical facilities. At the core, however, he said a great need is making sure staff have what they need from compensation to resources. 'I want us to become a premiere customer service organization and to do that we need to empower our frontline staff,' he added. With a long way to go and many changes yet to be made, Tine said this is just the tip of the iceberg. The future, he said will focus on these four pillars: service, efficiency, agility and accountability. Gov. Stein said stories like Jocelyn's should be unique, but are not. Her story resembles thousands of others, he said. In addition to prioritizing raising pay for the state's DMV examiners, Gov. Stein said efforts are underway to simplify the agency's website and to ramp up efficiency as soon as this summer by creating 85 new positions. See which NCDMV offices are starting Saturday summer hours this weekend 'The DMV is not political. It's about service — service to the people of North Carolina,' the governor said. CBS 17 asked what tangible changes customers can see in these next few days and weeks. Commissioner Tine said the first round of changes can already be seen on the DMV website and encourages people to take a look. Off the top, he pointed to their homepage which directs people to a few questions which can help people determine if that need a Real ID right now. It also displays the message that REAL ID is 'completely optional.' As they work to address a lot of issues head-on, all at once, the commissioner said if people do not have an urgent need for something today, to not come to an office right now. Also coming soon to DMV offices will be changes that target the way appointments are processed and the efficiency of training individuals conducting road tests. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. DMV begins Saturday hours in Kernersville
The N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles will begin Saturday walk-in service hours this weekend in the Kernersville office at 810-A N. Main St. This year, the division is expanding from 16 to 20 the number of offices offering services from 8 a.m.-noon on 11 Saturdays from May 31-Aug. 23 (offices will be closed on June 28 and July 5). Kernersville is among the four new offices with Saturday hours, along with Elizabeth City, Clayton and Durham East. Saturday hours also are offered at the DMV office in Winston-Salem at 2001 Silas Creek Parkway. Walk-in services will be provided, no appointment necessary. Last summer, nearly 17,000 customers were served at 16 offices during the 12 Saturdays of the 2024 season. Services that will be offered during the Saturday hours include driver license or ID cards, renewals or duplicate orders, address changes, REAL ID issuances, and road tests for customers that have already completed the knowledge and written tests. Anyone considering a visit to the DMV should first check to determine if they can complete their business online. NCDMV offers many online services, including driver license and ID card renewals, ordering duplicate licenses and ID cards, address changes and voter registration applications. With TSA now checking for REAL IDs, DMV Commissioner Paul Tine is encouraging North Carolinians to be informed about requirements for air travel: Unless you have upcoming air travel or will be visiting a federal building, there is no need to rush to the DMV. DMV continues to issue REAL IDs. Passports, military IDs, and global entry cards are all acceptable substitutes for a REAL ID. To learn more about REAL ID requirements and guidance, visit

What happens if you travel without a Real ID
Wednesday, May 7 is the first day a Real ID compliant license — or another acceptable document — is needed to board a commercial aircraft in the U.S. Why it matters: If you aren't Real ID compliant, you may experience longer wait times at the airport, Transportation Security Administration spokesperson Daniel Velez tells Axios. What to expect: If you show up at a TSA checkpoint without a Real ID, you may have to undergo additional screening. This can range from answering questions to confirm your identity to a personal search, Velez says. "The good news is that 81% of passengers already use their Real ID or another acceptable form, so we do not expect there to be any inconveniences or wait times at all," Velez says. Context: You don't need a Real ID to drive, vote, or for federal benefits, like Social Security, participate in a federal jury, testify in federal court, or access a hospital. Rather, a Real ID is helpful if you frequently fly commercial, visit nuclear sites, military bases and certain federal facilities, North Carolina DMV spokesperson Marty Homan tells Axios. Between the lines: Real IDs are typically marked with a star in the upper right corner, though the specific design may vary by state. By the numbers: Roughly 300,000 Real IDs were issued to North Carolinians between January and April of this year by the NCDMV, per Homan. 4.5 million people, or about 52% of residents, have Real IDs in North Carolina and 4.1 million don't. The big picture: North Carolina DMVs are slammed as people scramble to renew their licenses ahead of the deadline. If you aren't flying domestically any time soon, you don't need to rush to the DMV, Hamon says. NCDMV is encouraging people with a passport or military ID to wait to get their Real ID, so people without those forms of ID can get a Real ID.

Wait for REAL ID several hours at Raleigh DMV offices as deadline approaches
RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — The clock is ticking, and the lines are long if you need a real ID. The deadline is Wednesday. According to the NC DMV, 52% of North Carolinians already have a REAL ID. At the DMV office on Spring Forest Road in Raleigh, the line stretched around the building and down the sidewalk for most of the day on Monday. 'May 7 is the deadline so I said, 'Let me get to the DMV fast,' and look at the line!' exclaimed Lili Fleming, who wanted to get her REAL ID before the deadline. Any other day, a lot of people say they'd simply give up and go home. Andy Raby's done that a couple of times already. 'This is my third time trying,' he noted. Starting Wednesday, a REAL ID or other acceptable form of identification, like a passport, will be required to fly or get into some federal buildings. After waiting outside for about an hour and 45 minutes, taking business calls, Nick Sullivan was thrilled to get to the front of the line. 'It feels good. I'm almost there,' he said. While most people carried on conversations, took calls, or kept to themselves, there was some frustration, and DMV staff tried to explain the reason behind the long waits. 'Everyone looks at wait times; I will never give you a wait time,' said one employee. He explained that some people are taking different tests that take a while. 'If I've got 30 license duplicates, people trying to get a REAL ID, that's going to take an hour and 15 minutes. If I've got 10 road tests, that's the same hour and 15 minutes,' he noted. 'It's not how many people are in front of you. It's what's in front of you.' He also reminded people who don't need to fly right away that they may not need to rush to get the REAL ID and encouraged people to look at their license before coming in, so they can potentially avoid an unnecessary wait. He said 5 people who already had a REAL ID came in Monday to ask for one. After arriving at 9 a.m. to wait in line, Anthony Davies says the process took 4 hours. 'I was expecting to be here maybe longer actually,' he said. Sullivan, who also got done in about four hours, is just glad it's over. 'It was a relief to finally get it done,' he said. 'But you have to have a lot of patience today.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
