₹77.17 lakh allotted for horticulture crops development in Virudhunagar district

The Department of Horticulture and Plantation Crops has allocated ₹77.17 lakh to Virudhunagar district for promoting horticulture crops, including increasing the area of its cultivation under the State Horticulture Development scheme. In a statement, Collector N.O. Sukhaputra has said the funds would be utilised to increase the area of cultivation of traditional vegetables, chilly, coconut and flowers. A subsidy of ₹24,000 per hectare will be given for growing traditional vegetables. It would be extended to 45 ha for which ₹10.80 lakh has been allotted. Similarly, the subsidy for chilli and coconut is ₹12,000 each. The proposal to extend the coverage of cultivation of chilli and coconut is 10 ha each for which a total of ₹24 lakh has been allotted for the district. The proposal for increase in coverage of flowers is 75 acres and the subsidy is ₹9 lakh at the rate of ₹12,000 per ha. The total subsidy meant for increasing the cultivation of these crops is ₹43.80 lakh. Besides, the department has planned to encourage terrace garden in houses. Terrace garden kits will be distributed with a 50% subsidy to 300 for which ₹1.35 lakh has been allocated. The cost of each kit is ₹900 and the subsidy will be 450, the Collector said. Another component of subsidy is to increase the coverage of chilli cultivation by removing the wild growth of Prosopis juliflora. Under the scheme, 50% subsidy of ₹5,000 per ha. will be given to 100 hectares for which ₹5 lakh has been earmarked. A sum of ₹26.62 lakh has been allotted for containing white fly attack in coconut trees. A 50% subsidy of ₹1,775 per hectare will be given to 1,500 hectares. Interested farmers can register themselves for getting the subsidy through or through Uzhavan app. They can also approach the block Assistant Director (Horticulture), the Collector said.

For the first time in Tamil Nadu, economic offender detained under Goondas Act

In a first of its kind, an economic offender has been detained under Goondas Act in Tamil Nadu. Based on the recommendation of the Superintendent of Police (South Zone), Economic Offences Wing, Virudhunagar Collector N. O. Sukhaputra, has ordered detention of one S. Gangadaran of Sankarankoil who had been arrested for having cheated 239 persons to the tune of ₹12 crore. A statement said that based on complaints received from several people regarding the cheating done by Gangadaran in the guise of giving them franchise for a chain of biriyani shops, the accused was arrested on July 7. The statement added that a Government Order dated July 8, 2025, permitted officials to detain accused involved economic offences under the Goondas Act. Based on the new G.O., the detention order was issued and was served to the accused on August 3 at Madurai Central Prison where he had been lodged.

36 medical camps to be held in Virudhunagar under Nalam Kaakkum Stalin programme in Virudhunagar district

Virudhunagar district administration has planned to conduct 36 medical camps under 'Nalam Kaakkum Stalin' starting on August 2. In a statement, Virudhunagar Collector N. O. Sukhaputra said that the inaugural camp would be held at Government Higher Secondary School at Chatrareddiyapatti. Specialist doctors from various departments would participate in the medical camps where in the people could get check for blood pressure and also take 24 different blood tests. Besides, they could get echogram, x-ray and check for diabetes. Screening for breast cancer, oral cancer, tuberculosis and leprosy could also be done at the camps. People can also get ultra-sound scan, he added. Treatment for neurological issues, eye testing, physiotherapy and consultation for general surgeries would be provided. Women and children can also get benefited at the camps. Dermatologists, ENT specialists, orthopedician, cardiologist and dentist would be present along with doctors for alternative medicines like Siddha and Ayurveda would be present at the free medical camps. Besides, the screening and treatment, people can also visit the camps for registration for Chief Minister's Comprehensive Health Insurance scheme, to get unique identity cards for differently-abled persons, identity cards for unorganised secord workers welfare board and income certificate from Revenue Department, the Collector said.

₹26 crore allotted for Virudhunagar district under Agricultural Infrastructure Financing Facility

The district administration has invited applications from interested persons for establishing post-harvest management infrastructure in Virudhunagar district. In a statement, Collector N. O. Sukhaputra said a total of ₹26 crore had been allotted for Virudhunagar district under Agricultural Infrastructure Financing Facility. The scheme would be implemented by the Department of Agricultural Marketing and Agri Business. The beneficiary could get a maximum of ₹2 crore loan under the scheme for a term of seven years. An interest subvention of 3% would be given to beneficiaries. Under the scheme, godowns and silos, transport facilities, processing units and facilities for ripening fruits in scientific ways could be set up. Besides, facilities for production of organic inputs, infrastructure for modern and precision farming and creating of region-wise crop cluster for export could be created. Primary agricultural cooperative societies, cooperative credit societies, farmers producers organisations, self-help groups for women, individual farmers could be the beneficiaries. The facilities would help storage of food grains without any loss and help to sell them at the right time to get right remuneration. Interested persons and organisations can approach nationalised banks or NABARD or the Department of Agricultural Marketing and Agri-Business. 349 camps to be held in Virudhunagar district under 'Ungaludan Stalin' programme

A total of 349 camps would be held in Virudhunagar district under Ungaludan Stalin programme. In a statement, Virudhunagar Collector N.O. Sukhaputra said that the 229 camps would be held in 11 panchayat union areas and 120 camps would be held in urban areas like Sivakasi Corporation, five municipalities and nine Town Panchayats. The camps in urban areas would deal with 43 services offered by 13 departments and in rural areas with 46 services offered by 15 departments. As a prelude to this camp, volunteers would make door-to-door distribution of pamphlets on the scheme along with application forms. The volunteers would interact with the people and explain to them about the welfare schemes that would help them and encourage them to participate in the camps. The camps would be held from July 15 to November 7. The inaugural day camps would be held at six places in Amanakkunatham panchayat in Aruppukottai block, Kelakeppylingampatti in Kariyapatti block, Maraiyur in Narikudi block, Ward 1 in Sivakasi Corporation, Ward 1 in Srivilliputtur municipality, the statement said.
