Revolving Door Roundup: MSNBC Continues to Staff Up Ahead of Versant Launch

More MSNBC Hires : MSNBC is beefing up its executive ranks in preparation for its separation from the NBCUniversal News Group and the launch of Versant. The network announced the hiring of Marcus Mabry-most recently with CNN-to be its senior vice president of content strategy responsible for MSNBC's current and future digital products. At CNN, he was the network's senior vice president of digital editorial and programming, leading those teams in the Digital Product and Services division. In addition to Mabry, Joey Cole is returning to MSNBC as a vp of planning for newsgathering. Cole re-joins from NBC News, where she served as an executive producer on NBC News Now. She will be responsible for planning coverage logistics of current-day, next-day, and future news events as well as leading a team focusing on strategic planning, developing coverage schedules, and content guidelines across various platforms. New Streaming Addition: Major Garrett's long-running podcast series, The Takeout, is becoming a streaming show. The series will stream on CBS News 24/7 five days a week at 5 p.m. ET and cover political happenings, in-depth interviews, and original segments. Life After NBC News: Former Meet the Press moderator Chuck Todd is launching a new weekly political show on the journalism-focused streaming service Noosphere. Sunday Night with Chuck Todd will feature the host speaking with newsmakers in restaurants, bars, and other public venues in the Washington, D.C. area. 'No talking heads, studios, or pundits arguing over Zoom, just authentic human interactions with smart people at the center of the news,' Todd said in a promo for the new series.

MSNBC's Post-NBC News Plans May Include New Products

MSNBC president Rebecca Kutler and her senior executives are in the midst of preparing for the network to be spun off from the NBCUniversal News Group and join the newly-created SpinCo later this year. The network is in the process of looking for new office and studio space. It also recently hired Scott Matthews to oversee its newsgathering operation with plans to hire more than 100 journalists. According to a new story published in New York magazine, Kutler also intends to launch new products, including a streaming service in addition to MSNBC's linear channel. Other opportunities that may be explored include an expansion of its live event business-as well as digital and audio offerings-and working with brands that have built-in audiences. TVNewser reached out to MSNBC for comment on these plans, but received no response at press time. MSNBC has seen success from its live events business. Launched in 2023, MSNBC Live events frequently feature opportunities for the network's anchors and hosts to interact directly with their fanbase. This past January, MSNBC Live co-hosted the fourth and final Democratic National Committee leadership forum in Washington, D.C. And last September, it held two Democracy 2024 sessions at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York.

NBCUniversal's Conde teases news subscription service

NBCUniversal News Group Chairman Cesar Conde said the network is planning to launch a premium subscription service for news as soon as late 2025. At Semafor's Innovating to Restore Trust in News Summit on Thursday, Conde said the new service would be 'laser-focused' on premium video, 'in all shapes and forms, short-form, long-form.' Conde maintained that some news content will remain free and ad-supported. He pointed, though, to the success of the network's free streaming news channel, NBC News Now, as evidence of consumer demand for high-quality video. NBC's roots, Conde said, are in 'free journalism for mass audiences – that's not going to change.' And he stressed that the 'best journalism' will remain free. 'But in addition to that, we think there's an opportunity to provide a premium experience for subscriptions here,' Conde added. Conde oversees the NBC network at its most unstable point in years. NBCUniversal is in the midst of a yearlong spinoff of its cable and broadcast assets, a task that reduces NBC's reach in television, but allows parent company Comcast to keep itself from being dragged down by the rapidly declining cable TV business. And while NBC has attempted to improve its image among right-leaning viewers — it lobbied hard to host a Republican primary television debate — its programming decisions, such as the hiring and subsequent firing of former Republican National Committee chair Ronna McDaniel, alienated some conservatives and Democrats. In a social media post earlier this month, US President Donald Trump went after Comcast chief Brian Roberts, calling him a 'lowlife,' and vaguely suggested that he should be punished for the content on the broadcast networks.
